Must be about 5 years ago, but it's been sung more over the last couple of years.

Ring of Fire is a Johnny Cash song, not Roy Orbison.

The story goes that it was started by Carra's dad and a bunch of his mates.

Started in connection with what? The Istanbul match or some other reason?

No it was just started (as nearly all the songs do) by the travelling away supporters. It seems that Carra's dad is a big Johnny Cash fan and would always get The ROF going on the train or bus, and it just kind of caught on.

The Champions League run really got it going. The first time I heard it loud and sung by everybody in the ground was at Leverkusen in the last 16

First time I'd heard it was the same season at WBA on Boxing Day (night) when we wellied them 5-0. :)
