----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This years event will take place between the 12-14th April 2007.
The Grand National is the most valuable National Hunt handicap horse race in the United Kingdom. It is the biggest betting race in the United Kingdom, and is popular amongst many people who do not normally watch or bet on horse racing at other times of the year.
Gnomie 03-12-2007, 03:37 PM Should have a few animal rights people joining soon
theninesisters 03-12-2007, 04:13 PM It's all horse play to me :034:
Gnomie 03-12-2007, 04:20 PM Nowt to get long in the face about.
THE Grand National will pump a record £10m into Merseyside’s economy next month. more (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/liverpooldailypost/news/regionalnews/tm_headline=cash-records-set-to-fall-as-visitors-flock-to-national%26method=full%26objectid=18817406%26sitei d=50061-name_page.html)
The whole thing seems to revolve around pretty girls in large hats these days.
Its well and truly here peeps; Are they marketing it as a WAGs event? Seems that way on the news and in the papers.....
Bets taken so far include the colour of Coleen's hat, how many horses will die and if it will rain. 1976 saw only 6000 attend. John McCririck once said Liverpool people didn't deserve the race.
With the 2 new grandstands officially opened yesterday, there were in excess of 30,000 racegoers, 50,000 expected today and over 70,000 tomorrow. Everyone living in Melling Road gets a free ticket for the inconvenience on race weekend and after the good people of the area took in all those strangers on the bomb hoax day, a super spread was laid out as a thank you a few weeks later by the race organisers. Source. Radio Merseyside throughout yesterday.
ps. I've got two donkeys in the works sweep. Simon and (no, not Garfunkel) but Slim Pickings.
The good news is - they are running today to give them a head start.
theninesisters 04-13-2007, 12:15 PM I wonder if anyone will see Tom Slemen's 'ghost rider'
I've no time for the new stand seeing as they took part of the racing circuit to build it...mind you it will be packed in Matthew Street tonight with ladies in their sunday best! :PDT_Aliboronz_24:
So its still a race with horses then and fellas go too? I'm shocked
Shame that the way the media represent it is with images such as:

I think it should be large girls in pretty hats then I could go ^_^''
Why Isn't horse racing popular until the Grand Nationals on?
The people who organize the National and Skinny Jockies need snakes to eat their faces for what happens to the horses.
Their must be a summoning spell somewhere to summon snakes.
I'd prefer to summon cats though, I'm a cat person.
My white cat Astrid If she was the size of a tiger would eat their faces.
naked lilac 04-14-2007, 02:21 AM Okay.. this race isn't taking place in a regular arena (I am assuming, by reading these posts?)
I love a good race.. but, if this is a no-bards .. run the horses to bits race..:disgust: then... Shameful to the overwealthy participants..
I would like to learn more about it.. Is there a link to it..??? ta
If all the ladies are running around the city in Pretty Hats, etc.. .... then, maybe you can place a bet on the prettiest hat... ha ha ha...:unibrow:
They were running bets of the colour of Colleens hat yesterday, then she turns up with no hat at all.

Steven 04-14-2007, 10:20 AM I hope the lucky pin I stuck in the echo will work today. The horse I backed last year was last seen pulling a milk float down Kensington (I think Ernie was driving it.)
Trigger ! that's what it was called .
All eyes on Liverpool and our special year!
Just been watching Saturday Kitchen and they did a small feature from Liverpool about wines and mentioned our 800th birthday!

Whats the big deal with women and hats In the Grand National?
Why do people dress up fancy to only watch a few horse races?

Thanks for that informative literature.. It all comes clearer now... ta ra...:PDT11
Slim Pickings as I mentioned earlier in the thread - so I got third in the sweep in work - £25 for a two quid bet, not bad.
LIVERPOOL was the big winner during this year’s Grand National at Aintree, earning more than £17m for the local economy. Read (http://www.liverpooldailypost.co.uk/liverpool-news/regional-news/2007/09/03/liverpool-biggest-winner-at-the-grand-national-64375-19725348/)
