Pleasant Street Board School

Does anyone know what's happening to this? I noticed last time I wandered down mount pleasant that there is some building work going on around that area (opposite the YMCA on Mount Pleasant). I'm hoping they aren't tearing it down, It would make such a renovation project.

Apartments, plus they're building a separate block behind it.

Good pics. I am just glad they haven't flattened this building, its quite historic.

It reminds me of my old Junior school - St Patricks on Park Road - which was also falling to bits. I remember great chunks of plaster falling from the ceiling and nearly killing us poor kids.

My mother went there, she is now 72 and has found the internet along with a couple of people who also went there.

I passed it on the bus today, but all you can see is the roof, all open to the elements at the moment.
Just as long as they keep that sign!

If that sign goes I won't be very happy... it has to say. It's as much a part of the building as the bricks. Wouldn't be the same without it.

It would be much more interesting if the sign stays ha ha. Does anyone know the history of this school, it looks like late Victorian to me but probably earlier. I'm glad that this was lucky to be saved, its probably the only original building left on that block.

Joseph Sharples says:
"Built as the Hibernian Schools in 1818 by the Liverpool Benevolent Society of St Patrick, to provide non-denominational education for children of Irish parents. Originally a simple, two-story brick rectangle, with classrooms and master's house under the same roof. The domestic part, w, survives more or less unaltered, with a columned doorway to May Street. The teaching accommodation was extended and considerably altered from 1851."

So its almost 200 years old! Wow!!!!

So that would make it one of the oldest buildings in the City Centre after the Bluecoat chambers :)

There's still a lot of 18th Century buildings in the City Centre.
Mount Pleasant, Duke Street, Hanover Hotel, Lyceum (actually 1800-02), Ropewalks area and other streets.
Thery're usually the smallest buildings in the shopping streets.

The netting/scaffolding has been removed from the front of this school, to reveal that the famous sign is still in place. A new roof has been put on in the last few months. It looks to me that new windows are being installed.

My Mother who was born in 1905 did go to this school and so did her Mother , also my brothers and sisters so I hope we do not let this building go.
