Strawberry Fields in Central Park, New York City, near the Dakota Apartment Building where John lived with Yoko and their then young son Sean. . .

Incidentally the Dakota when I saw it reminded me of some of the big houses on Ullet Road. See http://jerrygormley.tripod.com/CentralPark.html

Excellent Chris..Have you been back to Quarrybank !!...
Would you like to see Inside.
Hi Gerard
I've seen it from outside in recent years. I wouldn't mind seeing inside once again. Is that an offer to show me the inside? If so, I will be in the 'Pool in May. :)

Remember This Chris !!..One of the Original Doors as seen in the Ground Floor entrance Photo..
You and John Lennon would have used that Door handle a few times I bet..
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c60/gedfleming/2NDLOTFORBEATLESSLIDESHOW-3.jpg
I remember being upbraided by the deputy headmaster for coming in late through that door of a morning with expressions of "George, you're slow enough to catch a cold! When are you going to get the lead out? Lad, you'll never amount to anything in life if you can't be on time." etc.!
Great pics, Gerard. I'll be in touch with the dates when I will be in the 'Pool.

Thats spooky that mate..Looking at the Outline and Shapes of the Roof area in your Photo..Mine is taken in exactly the Same place Chris..
Feel the Vibes Moriarty..As Oddball once Said...Spooky Man !!
I did my sketch standing in front of what was at the time the cafeteria. Is it possible that "Quarry Bank Hall" is what was the cafeteria? If so the bike sheds were to the left parallel with Harthill Road.

Thanks, Gerard. I think I need to be on-site to refresh my memories a bit better. Indeed Quarry Bank Hall doesn't seem to be in quite the same place as I remember the cafeteria being in so they must be different buildings.

Director Roman Polanski filmed the exteriors for Rosemary's Baby at the Dakota; however, the interiors were created in a Hollywood soundstage. The building does not allow filming inside.
The building also plays a crucial role in Jack Finney's novel Time and Again.
The building features prominently in Lee Child's 2006 Jack Reacher novel The Hard Way.
Special Agent Aloysius X. L. Pendergast, a fictional character appearing in many novels by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, has an apartment at the Dakota.
David Aames, the protagonist in Cameron Crowe's 2001 movie Vanilla Sky is a Dakota resident, although only exteriors were shot in the building, all the interiors were shot on a sound stage
Tim Curry mentions the Dakota by name in his song "I Do the Rock".
Nas mentions the Dakota by name in his song "Thief's Theme" while talking about John Lennon
The Dakota is referenced in the Hole song, "20 Years In The Dakota".
Gene Simmons of Kiss sought residency in the Dakota in the late 1970's, but his request was turned down by the building's tenancy board.
John Lennon was shot in front of his residence, the Dakota, on December 8, 1980 by Mark David Chapman.
Christine Lavin wrote and performs a song called The Dakota. In it she recounts her feelings about John Lennon's murder and how she is compelled to think of the incident every time she passes the building.
Brand New mentions the Dakota in their song "Play Crack the Sky" from the album Deja Entendu.
Stereophonics have a song named Dakota from the album Language.Sex.Violence.Other?.
Well-known residents of the Dakota building have included:
actress Lauren Bacall
composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein
rock star Bono and his activist wife Ali Hewson
newscaster Connie Chung
sportsman F Ambrose Clark who was also grandson of the original builder
actor José Ferrer
singer Roberta Flack
author Charles Henri Ford
actress Judy Garland
actress Judy Holliday
playwright William Inge
actor Boris Karloff

In my last travel, in January, I can saw about Beatles places...
* Beatles Store and Albert Dock (Merseyside Maritime Museum, a gold disc for the single A Hard Dayīs Night and the LP Something New).
* Town Hall (the recepcion in 1964).
* Cashman Club new and old.
* The Iron Door at Temple St.
* St. Georgeīs Gardens and St. Georgeīs Hall.
* Piction Library and Walker Library (about MacCa ceremony, ..., and paints of Stu).
* Odeon Cinema.
* Empire Theatre.
* Mathew St. (the new Cavern - i do not like it- and the site of the true Cavern, White Star Pub, The Grapes, Rigby statue, Hard Dayīs Night Hotel, ... ).
* John Lennonīs home (Menlove Ave.)
* MacCaīs home.
* Pennylane.
Then I saw others places of Liverpool and the Anfield Stadium and Museum. I was keep there 5 days only, and I can not see too much... And all by walk, coz i do not like the bus very much... coz i like see the life in Liverpool too.
marie

Yes, i saw Strawberry fields too!!
A guide? LOL. I usually take a fly with ryanair (50 only go&back) from Santander, near Bilbao to Johnīs Lennon Airport. I usually get a hotel near Albert Dock, at Chaltron St.
Now, i have a book called "The Beatles Liverpool, a complete guide". But there are too much places to visit and few time to do it!!
In my next travel, i like visit to Liverpool FC training if it is possible and others Beatles places. I like to go to Manchester one day too.
If u like, i can send to u a map about my next travel (by walk too, lol).
Thanks Gerard!!

I dont think you can get in Girl,Why dont you get in touch with LFC and tell them where you are Travelling from,They might let you in.

Hello Marie,Here are a few Beatles Tours you could consider going on..
http://www.goldentours.co.uk/tour.php?112
http://www.beatlestours.co.uk/
There are plenty of Tours to choose from but make sure you choose the one that gives you access to Mendips..I think a few of the "Unofficial" ones just stop Outside for a few minutes and Drive off..I dont know too much about them to be honest..
I wouldn't go on one as I know the places anyway....and some places these These Tour "Experts" dont know about.
I cant really answer about them being expensive as I dont know Exactly where these Tours go to..
I will say though that I have gone on lots of Expeditions with my Camera searching out Beatles Places and It takes me at least 4 hours..
For Example..If you start at Walton Hospital where Paul McCartney was born you are in the Far north side of Liverpool..If you wanted to go to see where Paul Lived in Speke then you have to travel right across the City to the South Side..This Journey alone from Walton to Speke would take the best part of 30 Minutes..And that would be without getting out of the Car..If You stopped at Every Beatles Place I know and got out the Car to take Pictures and have a walk about it would take about 3 days !!..How some of these Tours take only 2 hours I find hard to Believe..If I took you around Woolton Village alone showing you Beatles places it would take over an Hour...That would be on Foot of Course..I'd show you all the places Lennon used to Go with his Girlfriends and play Footy with his mates...I dont do Tours Though...Too much hassle involved getting around Liverpool with Finding places to park the Car and then moving on and Finding Somewhere else to Park....But I'm thinking about it !!..
My Advise Marie..Find out Exactly how long the Tour lasts and where they Visit..and Do you get to go in Mendips..If the Tour is Less than 3 Hours I would forget it myself...
Have a Look on Google for "Beatles Tours"....Good Luck.
Did you know Paul McCartney Lived outside Liverpool's ground when he was Born..Would you like to see some Photies.
The only tour that lets you in Mendips is the National Trust one which is Ģ13 for a combined ticket to there and Paul McCartneys house. It takes about 2.5-3 hours round trip from the city centre and just takes you to the houses and back, with about 30 minutes inside each house although the drivers will show you some other sites along the way (Penny Lane for instance, Sefton Gerneral hospital were Julia Lennon was pronounced dead). The houses dont open till21st March and advance booking is essential, the link is here

Hi Marie
Doesn't look much like him close up. But then I didn't think the Lennon "Virtual Sculpture" (http://virtualsculpture.co.uk/gallery/index.html) you showed looked much like him either. The glasses are right but that's about all!!! Viz:

Compare the Virtual Sculpture attempt to the wonderful sculptures of John Lennon and of Sir Paul by Liverpool sculptor Tom Murphy, copied from another thread for Mr Murphy in the Famous Scousers area (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showthread.php?p=23218). The photographs are by ScouserDave, who said, "Had a lovely breakfast at Tom Murphy's cafe yesterday. Met up with the great man himself (pictured). I found this Lennon cast in the back of their kitchen! Told him and his missus that they should have it on the cafe wall."

I pass this site every day on the train going in and out of Union Station, Washington, D.C., it doesn't look like much now, and it is used today for commercial purposes, but this was the site of the Beatles' first live concert in the United States: the Uline Arena, a 65-year-old brick coliseum in Washington, D.C. on February 11, 1964:

Hi Marie
Sorry to be so long answering you but I just noticed your question. Those sculptures by Tom Murphy are at the Liverpool Art Café at 483 West Derby Road run by Tom and his wife Catherine.
Have a look at "Art for the people, not just the elite" (Daily Post article on the Liverpool Art Café) (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/entertainment/exhibitions/tm_objectid=17184111%26method=full%26siteid=50061-name_page.html) and http://www.artinliverpool.com/details/artcafe.htm-- their own site at http://www.liverpoolartcafe.com/ is under construction. Maria. You won't find many better than this one and it looks like between us we've viewed a lot. When you've read everything to read and listened to every record to listen to - try the anomolies page on this site to see if you can hear the hidden stuff and make out the obscure bits and pieces. I can karaoke my stuff so that it's just sound or just lyrics and you'd be surprised what you can hear and you get to thinking that it's meant to be there or it could easily have been re-done, overdubbed or dubbed out.

Hi Ged
Like "fish and finger pie" in "Penny Lane" for example? :unibrow:
The Beatles certainly had their own personal and inside jokes that they put on their records, didn't they?
I wonder though if a few of the sounds you mention might have more to do with the more primitive recording methods back then, than that they were intentional?

Nah Chris. I don't mean lyrics that are meant to be heard like 'Fish and finger pie' try this one for starters.

There's loads more like the fade out shoutings and goings on on Hey Bulldog or what is said during the Helter Skelter guitar solo or the Richard 3rd death scene of King Lear in the I am the walrus fade out or the shenanagans during Birthday etc...
What School Is that?
I'm sure the girls perv on the boys too.

Gerard, sometimes I hate u!!! (a joke). U take a goods and originals photos!! Good work!! And thanks for show to we!! :PDT_Piratz_26:
This page describes how to get the Oops effect or out of phase stereo method whereby you can isolate certain channels so that you get just the Melletron on the Strawberry Fields intro etc and nothing else - very eerie or you can get just the left speaker as in mono or just the words or just the drum track etc - it's very good but doesn't work exactly on every track but adds a new dimension, especially through headphones.

Hi Gerard
Many thanks for these pics. The brick building actually looks more like a stables and I am thinking that St. Barnabas Cottage may have been the small building actually attached to the back of Dovedale Towers. I will ask my Mum this evening but frankly she is not in good shape and has just gone into a nursing home. She is starting to fantasize a lot of things so her memory might not be too accurate as to where exactly Uncle Bill lived.

John Lennon's boyhood stamp album is at the National Postal Museum in Washington, D.C. by Union Station. Since I am in and out of the station a couple of times a day going to and from work, I should get in and see it.
See http://www.postalmuseum.si.edu/lennon/index.html
The photograph below is Union Station, with the Postal Museum in the distance beyond it with the flagpole sticking up from it.
When the Beatles arrived at Union Station in February 1964 for their live concert at the nearby Washington Coliseum, they were greeted by 3,000 excited fans. Letter to the Washington Post:
Dear Editor
I'm astonished that Washington Post Staff Writer Paul Farhi makes the mistake of writing in his otherwise fine article, "Live and Let Live: Sir Paul" (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/29/AR2009072903542.html) (Washington Post, July 30, 2009) about Sir Paul McCartney and his upcoming gig Saturday at FedEx Field "the concert comes 45 years after the Beatles made their American concert debut in Washington, at the long-gone Coliseum."
Of course the old brick Coliseum is still there, just north of Union Station, if looking a bit worse for wear. It remains a DC and national treasure that urgently needs to be preserved. I pass it every day as I ride on the MARC train to and from Baltimore and always think of my fellow Liverpudlians, The Beatles, and their first American concert here at the Washington Coliseum on February 11, 1964.
Best regards
Christopher T. George

Friends,
For many years I had a friend that played trumpet with Aker Bilks' band in the Cavern and elsewhere about Liverpool.
ColinRanger Smith, a qualified electrician, taught himself to read and write music after buying a yukulele( A small guitar with 4 strings?) when a boy. He grew up in Potters Bar and as a lad was some sort of 'sea-scout' and served on the RRS Discovery which was berthed on the Thames at that time, it is now in Dundee.
[incidently the very first trouble recorded at an outdoor music festival was at a Bilk gig]
He told me a tale of the birth of the Beatles...[1962-I think]
Aker Bilks' band often played at the Cavern, Trad Jazz. With the Beatles supporting. In the summer AB's band was booked to play on a 'ferry' that plied from Liverpool to the IOM, for the IOM Jazz Festival. Times were good. The young Colin playing regularly at all the best venues, sports car etc.
The band was also booked at a large Country House gig inland from Liverpool to be played after the summer 'rush', again with the Beatles in support.
However, when the time came for that next gig it was they who played support.
The Beatles had hit the big time.
The rest is history.

Oudeis..great story... The ukelele is played a lot here ;) ; and I think it interesting he chose the ukelele to learn on so far away in Liverpool.... It is quite easy and fun.. Is he still alive..? What stories he must be able to tell.. Thanks for that one...

No. As my post opens...I had a friend.
The AB band is still going strong and Colin was playing with them until a short time before his death.
And yes there were one or two more stories. Wait and see. :)

Friends'
A short preamble is needed ere we begin.
We each will have had moments of relief; almost mis-timing the crossing of a busy road, the day off work when the plant catches fire and stadium disasters avoided by chance.
As I write the following tale my pain may be tinged with sweetness, but is nonetheless a distinct pain. The Beatles fans amongst you may know this pain.
The place, Scotland, just north of Edinburgh, the time, the mid sixties.
The Beatles were established, my sister knew all their songs, I was yet a little too young. We lived in what was, before the war, a hamlet that had been recently built-up. It was and still is about half a mile from the nearest shops. The shops, such as they were, occupied part of one street of the nearby town. It was not then a real town but an ancient crossroads built-up in it's turn.
My route was down one long long stepped hill road with farmland to right and left. I had been sent out to buy potatoes a stone or two and the return journey did not bear thinking about. I kicked and scuffed my way down the hill, tuned right into the shopping street. Across the road at this point was later to be the first pub in the UK to serve milk on draught, I know, daft, but true. The shops were just the front rooms of two-up-two-down stone built terraced houses. As I walked and looked about me I saw a Rolls Royce start-up and drive off round the corner to head north. I tuned into the small shop. The 'wifey' without looking up on hearing the bell at the top of the shop door said, "I'll be there in a minute."
I could see she was busy behind the counter writing with a broad felt-tipped marker pen on an A3 sheet of card.
She showed me the card, before putting it in the fron window, a wide grin upon her face.
"John and Yoko Shop Here." it read. :(
They were driving north with the kids and headed for Maca's estate.

Fitting enough - when one considers its past...
I don't think very much of that area; the 'Greek Theatre' near the Berkley University usually gets some big artists performing there. I saw Elton John play there; my current girlfried at the time wanted to see him.
What kind/genre of music is big with the kids in Liverpool/Mersey these days? No sense in me guessing from here.

Hi Marie, Gerard, et al.
I pass this site every day on the train going in and out of Union Station, Washington, D.C., it doesn't look like much now, and it is used today for commercial purposes, but this was the site of the Beatles' first live concert in the United States: the Uline Arena, a 65-year-old brick coliseum in Washington, D.C. on February 11, 1964:
http://www.nationaltrust.org/magazine/archives/arc_news_2006/112806.htm
I'll see if I can add some photographs of my own soon.
Chris
This may be the day for reviving old threads.
The Washington Coliseum where the Beatles played in 1964 is in the news today for having been victimized by some Anti-War "art":
http://link.email.washingtonpost.com/r/BZYGW4/W3SOD/VGLFM9/EF8TGJ/17QL7/ID/h
I would love to see the facility become a Beatles Museum and am working on that angle. Stay tuned.
Looks like the link I gave in that 2007 post is dead but here (http://www.preservationnation.org/magazine/2007/march-april/transitions030407.html) I found this statement:
"1941 Uline Arena, Washington, D.C.: later named Washington Coliseum and site of Beatles' first North American concert in 1964; brick, barrel-shaped venue, which hosted sporting events, concerts, and circuses, became city landmark in November; developer intends to reconfigure as residences."
That though might be old news because the old brick building is just sitting there with a huge sign for the Douglass Development Corporation so it looks as if they may still be looking for ideas to redevelop it. Step forward my idea for the Museum?????

Well-known residents of the Dakota building have included:
actress Lauren Bacall
composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein
rock star Bono and his activist wife Ali Hewson
newscaster Connie Chung
sportsman F Ambrose Clark who was also grandson of the original builder
actor José Ferrer
singer Roberta Flack
author Charles Henri Ford

...and, of course, the song "Get back"
from Wiki...
The released version of the song is composed of two verses, with an intro, outro, and several refrains. The first verse tells the story of a man named Jojo, who leaves his home in Tucson, Arizona, for some 'California grass'. (Paul's soon-to-be wife Linda had attended the University of Arizona in Tucson, where the couple later owned a spacious ranch.) The second verse is about a sexually ambiguous character "Loretta Martin" who "thought she was a woman, but she was another man." The single version includes a coda urging Loretta to "get back" where she belongs, as well.
...and so "JoJo" came from Tucson, with this popping up...
And Linda's first husband, ethnographer Joseph Melville See Jr., 62, died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound March 19 in Tucson, Ariz. He reportedly inspired the character Jo-Jo in the '69 Beatles song ''Get Back.''
