I thought I'd start a new thread seeing as I'm seeing loads at the moment!

Clock faces in Liverpool, there are loads of em! Usually found on a Church Tower and I can cover 99% of them in Liverpool but the more unusual ones please!!!! A close up and a picture of the whole building please!

And bonus points for getting to take a picture of the 'works'!

But I haven't nicked any pictures from you or anyone for any of my websites. That's a bit of a strong allegation to make.

I initially wanted pictures of one of the churches on Princes Road and asked the chap from Toxteth.net if I could use a selection for my website. He agreed and told me to contact you, which I did. You agreed to this and I set to work. Down the line, you asked me if I could include a link to your website - this I did at the weekend, as well as this forum and Snappel's excellent site. However this didn't please you at all and even though I told you that I was in the middle of a credits page, you demanded that all photo's that were yours should be removed - which I did straight away.

Apologies for this Kev, it is a matter for PM's but I thought I would set the record straight about 'nicking pictures' for my own publications.

Blimy, someone else must have an alias for your Liverpool Pictorial Website then. The guy in question must be stopped as he's posing as you.
The last time I had contact with you before I joined this forum was asking permission to use one of the images from Liverpool Pictorial (A shot of St Nicks if I'm not mistaken) and asked your permission - you then decided that my www.liverpoolbells.moonfruit.com page was a 'business' page and that I should be charged £153 for the copyright of this picture - I still have the original E-mail which I can provide to say that we have had contact before as well as E-mail's between us both about the Princes Road church. I keep all copyright e-mail's incase of any problems like this arise.

I have no problem with you spitting your dummy out and suddenly changing your mind about the pictures (as per a previous posting you were more than happy for me to use them) but don't go giving out allergations of 'picture theft' when this clearly isn't the case.

Hoping we can now get back on topic...

The clock chamber inside the tower at St Peter's Woolton.

Just out of view on the right hand side is the weight shaft which run to the base of the tower! The clock is manually wound twice a week and you have to haul a total of three seperate weights up to the level of the clock itself. I'll find out the exact weight of em but I've done this many a friday night to build up a thirst before the pub :)

Yes that's right. Lloyd's Bank took over the Trustee Savings Bank some years ago. Hence the new name Lloyd's TSB. Being the only bank in Garston these days, it gets very busy.

The Liverpool Time Ball and one o'clock gun was built at Waterloo Dock, Liverpool in 1845 and one of its objectives was to establish Greenwich time and to indicate it each day to the citizens of the Port of Liverpool. Eventually many towns and cities developed their own time ball systems, but it was particularly important for maritime ports to have a precise time signal. Chronometers on board ship had to be exact in order for the ships position to be accurately known.

John Hartnup at the Liverpool Observatory determined sidereal time from the stars by means of the transit telescope situated in one of the domes on the Observatory roof.

A sidereal clock at the Observatory kept sidereal time, and solar time was calculated from it. A time ball was fitted to the outside wall of the Observatory and was dropped each day at exactly one o'clock so that the citizens and mariners could check their timepieces. A time ball is a sphere, which slides up and down a vertical mast and can be abruptly dropped at an appointed hour. It was similar in all respects to that used at Greenwich and also at Portsmouth, which were also dropped at one o'clock.

Well not quite but on the Marie Celeste 5th floor of Lewis's Department store in Liverpool. The top few floors of this enormous store have been closed for some time. The 5th floor housed the restaurants and ladies' hairdressers. Not sure what the coloured warning lights, or the public address system attached to the clock, were for.

Those lights always make me think of the film "War Games" in which the state of alert board used colours. There are many of those clock/PA things around the store but I don't know what the lights were for either.

Could I be correct that as I was standing outside the Crowne Plaza smoking a Hamlet cigar at midnight that the clock on the Liver Building only struck "four" not "twelve"???? I had not had that much drink either. :PDT_Aliboronz_24:

Well I was outside tonight at midnight again... and the Liver Building clock did only strike four times at midnight. But maybe it only has ever struck for the quarter hours and not the full number of strokes for the hour? That is, it strikes four times on reaching the fourth quarter. Anybody know?

When's the last time you read the ripper murders? he was the prime suspect, the truth will never come out as items and evidence have been lost/destroyed forever.
The only time the real killer will be identified is when we find the key to take us back in time and thats gonna be like looking for Rocking horse manure.

I'm still sceptical about this so called "The Diary" and its proposed author "MICHAEL BARRETT".

In his? confession here....
http://www.casebook.org/suspects/james_maybrick/mb-con.bjan5.html

he makes many mistakes in this confession,no I'm not well up on my Grammar but I know a mistake when I see it,so how can a man who writes like this come up with a manuscript so well laid out and fooling some of the ripperologist.

Spelling mistakes, punctuation, can't remember times and dates.

If you concoct something like this, everything is and should be documented in the event.

Hello Pablo and George

There's no particular reason to suspect mortuary assistant Robert Mann to have been the Whitechapel Murderer, so he seems a bit of a nonstarter. For one thing, since Mann was age 52 at the time of the murders he seems on the old side to suddenly begin Ripper-like murders.

As for Mike Barrett's "confession" to having written the Maybrick Diary, I agree it doesn't hold water.

The bombshell released at the "Maybrick Trial" at the Liverpool cricket club in May 2007 was that researcher Keith Skinner announced that he had some type of unspecified documentation that tied the Diary to Battlecrease House, 7 Riversdale Road, where Florence and James Maybrick lived and where he died, allegedly of arsenic poisoning in May 1889.

I don't know for sure, lacking Skinner's further explanation of what exactly the documentation he possesses comprises, but this might take us back to the original idea that electricians working on the house found it there, or else there's some other reason to tie the document to Battlecrease. In any case, that presumably precludes Barrett from involvement in writing the Diary circa 1992 before taking it to London literary agent Doreen Montgomery.

Chris, they seem to come up with new suspects for the Ripper regularly. Is there any more likely suspects gonna raise their heads. Wasn't there talk of a woman being the Ripper.

ChrisGeorge
11-02-2009, 08:50 AM
Hi Pablo

There's no real evidence against anyone.

Convicted murderess Mary Pearcey is sometimes spoken of as a possible suspect but would appear to be a long shot for the killer. There is a good discussion of the "Jill the Ripper" theory here:

http://www.casebook.org/suspects/jill.html

I do think it is a possibility that the Ripper escaped from 13 Miller's Court after killing Mary Jane Kelly on 9 November 1888 wearing her clothing. This is suggested by the fact that some clothes were burned in the grate. Of course that would be a man wearing women's clothing, most probably. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle suggested that the Ripper could have been a man dressed as a woman.

On the front face of the inner tower of Liverpool Prison [Walton jail] is a clock which is unusual in that instead of having 5 minute divisions
between the figures on the face, [ ie:- between 12 and 1 or between 1 and 2 and so on ] it actually only has 4 divisions. Even staff who have worked there for many years have never noticed this, they are completely unaware of it and are therefor also unaware of the reason for it. This probably because the clock is situated overhead and in any case at casual glance looks like any other clock having figures 1 to 12 and two hands [minute hand and hour hand of course ]. However, the actual face of the clock is the original face of what was many years ago a ONE FINGERED CLOCK. The four divisions between each figure simply denoted `on the hour, a quarter past, half past, and a quarter to` the relevant figures. Sorry I have no photo for you, but as you may imagine prison authorities tend to frown upon people walking around their prisons with cameras hanging around their necks.
