View Full Version : Chinese New Year
AN exhibition of Chinese art from Beijing is being staged in Calderstones Park to coincide with Chinese New Year.
The event features paintings, drawings and silk works by a number of well-known Chinese artists.
It is taking place this week until Sunday – New Year's Day – at the Coach House in the park from 10am until 6pm.
The free event has been organised by Liverpool-based architect and artist Mrs Xia Lu and follows a successful event at the park during Christmas.
Visitors will be able to try their hand at Chinese painting and calligraphy.

My lad wont go as he says the dragon will scare him.
LIVERPOOL is preparing for the city’s biggest ever Chinese New Year.
As part of Liverpool’s 800th anniversary celebrations, the spectacular event will run over two days for the first time.
The action kicks off at 12.30pm with Tai Chi demonstrations in the shadow of Europe’s biggest Chinese arch in Nelson Street.

The Year of the Pig will see record crowds of up to 10,000 flocking to the city centre on Sunday for the climax of the show.
A street parade features dance performances by a 30ft golden dragon – a gift from Bejiing – lion, unicorn and lucky golden pig.
An extravaganza of music and dance, Chinese market, artistic workshops on Feng Shui, Chinese calligraphy and horoscope, will be on offer over the weekend.
At 1pm on Sunday, there will be Chinese fireworks at Great George's Square with a funfair on both days from 12pm-11pm.
The Chinese God Of Wealth, in traditional costume, will hand out blessings of luck and sweets for children.
It is said those born in the Year of the Pig are honest and loyal, patient and understanding and also highly intelligent.
Brian Wong, chief co-ordinator of the celebrations, said: “This will be the biggest Chinese year in our history and, according to the calendar, we will be celebrating the year of 4,705.”
A number of roads will be temporatily closed over the weekend including Nelson Street, Great George St, Nelson St, Grenville St South, Hardy St, Berry St and Bold Place.
Council leader Warren Bradley said: “Liverpool's Chinese community have played an invaluable role in the story of our city.
“It is only fitting that in our 800th year, we celebrate their culture with the biggest New Year celebrations the city has ever staged.”

The visual highlight of the celebrations will be a Year of the Pig street parade featuring dance performances by a brand new 30 foot long golden dragon, a lion and unicorn and a golden lucky pig. This will run from 12.00 to 16.00
At 13.00 there is the Chinese New Year fireworks / firecracker display at Great George's Square.
A fun fair will also be staged over both days from 12.00 - 23.00.
The Chinese God Of Wealth will also be in attendance, dressed in traditional costume handing our blessings of luck and sweets for children. It is believed those born in the Year of the Pig are said to be honest and loyal, patient and understanding and also highly intelligent.
thanks pete, got my camera fully charged

Thanks Dave it was brilliant,I'd love to see a couple of Billion spent on developing Chinatown I love it there.
Just to let you know whats happening in the photos, the dragon comes along eats the cabbage, frightens off bad spirits to being good luck/fortune by setting off the crackers/fireworks, usually at the top of the string with the crackers on is often a box which explodes with a huge bang and covers everyone in red confetti (red being the colour for good luck).
The money on the string is for the dragon dancers, often the local Kung Fu club, at the bottom of one of the strands is a red lucky envelope, which often contains money which people will give to each other, not just on New Year but other special occasions

Man that parade is busy. I was wearing a backpack and 2 cameras and trying to get through the crowd was a nightmare. Annoyingly I got to the fireworks early so I chose a good spot based on the angle of the sun. I waited 20 mins and everyone turned up. Then, they stood in front of me. Rats! Last year I was annoyed at my location but I managed to get some fantastic shots because I was above the crowd. It really wasn't good planning on putting everyone infront of the sun. Oh well. I still took 4gb's worth of photos so hopefully I've got something. I got really lucky last year with everything.
It was the first time I've been, i was impressed by it all. Only (slight) disappointment was the length of queue for the noodles and rice outside the China City, ended up going to McDonalds on the way home.

A tall fella with a backpack walked past me and my lad, was it you pete?

Tried to view it Dave, but it's still not available. They're probably running a few extra checks on you before they upload it:unibrow:
Look at the amount of people that attend the event, look at the mix of people, culture, and ethnicity.
Is that what they call Multiculturalism or Interculturalism ?

Cracking photos aren't they John? In your haste to share your knowledge, you forgot to show your appreciation of the people who sent the photos for you to comment on in the first place. LOL!

Oh yeah, I was born In the year of the OX.:PDT11
People born in the Year of the Ox are patient, speak little, and inspire confidence in others. They tend, however, to be eccentric, and bigoted, and they anger easily. They have fierce tempers and although they speak little, when they do they are quite eloquent. Ox people are mentally and physically alert. Generally easy-going, they can be remarkably stubborn, and they hate to fail or be opposed. They are most compatible with Snake, Rooster, and Rat people.
Most of thats right.
This Is my favourite pic of Kev's Chinese New Year Collection.:PDT11 :PDT10
