Ooops, I am still downloading mine, will wait until tomorrow to pop it up. It is of the 1885 ship Wavertree, a great old Cape Horner. Southampton made for a Liverpool company who owned her. She was dis-masted in a Cape Horn storm in 1910 and ended up as a barge in Buenos Aires. Some guy found her poor old body (still working as a barge I think) in 1966 and brought her to NYC, she was helped into the harbour by a sister ship, the Allerton. She sits at Southstreet Seaport and although they have re-masted her she needs a lot of work on her 'tween' area and general HELP!!!! They got a grant for 4 MILLION DOLLARS to restore her, Uni of Wisconsin are working on parts and various other ship restoration places. When she is done she will be part of the Southstreet Seaport Museum walk again and we can go on board once again. At last she can hold her head up high after being abandoned and left to die in a foreign land!!!. YAY

Here she is. Can't wait for the restoration to be complete. You can see it says WAVERTREE in white on the black stripe.

Wavertree was built at Southampton, England in 1885 for R.W. Leyland & Company of Liverpool, one of the last large sailing ships built of wrought iron. Today, she is the largest afloat. Wavertree was first employed to carry jute, used in making rope and burlap bags, between eastern India (now Bangladesh) and ... See MoreScotland. When less then two years old she entered the tramp trades, taking cargoes anywhere in the world she could find them. After sailing for a quarter century, she limped into the Falkland Islands in December 1910, having been dismasted off Cape Horn. Rather then re-rigging her, her owners sold her for use as a floating warehouse at Punta Arenas, Chile. She was converted into a sand barge at Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1947, and acquired by the South Street Seaport Museum in 1968.

You're very welcome.
Nothing going to hell - it was 2:00pm here and nobody had posted a pic so I put a gag one up. Didn't mean to stop anyone else posting so I took it down again.

I do feel like you're not allowed to have fun here anymore, unless you're posting on football threads. Seems to be de rigeur there. There's the joke thread but what if you just want to raise a smile and not actually tell a joke?

Not looking for a debate or an argument - peace and love to everyone - just expressing how I feel. I very much appreciate what Kev does, and action was needed, but some of the spark has gone.

Hi Kev

The Wavertree Monks' Well photograph was taken by me in the Sixties, when I took a number of black and white photographs of local historical sites. They vary in quality but I like this one because it has the two Liverpool lads in the photograph one with the mucky face and the other evidently picking his nose. I'll be posting more in coming days. I think the square b & w pics were taken with a Kodak Brownie camera that I acquired about 1964. I later graduated to a Russian Zenith 35 mm and then a Pentax 35 mm that I bought second hand at a shop on Manchester Street by the Mersey Tunnel entrance while I was working as a temporary clerk for Liverpool corporation in 1967. I have a number of color slides that I took with those latter two cameras that will need to be converted to jpegs to post.

All the best

Chris

Think the rules have slackened a wee bit this year. Supposed to be only one posted per day, so I'm assume later ones on the same day don't count... as for being ur own, preferably but I guess the odd one from our overseas cousins would be ok as long as they've got permission. But I don't make the rules, so not for me to say really :)

I asked Matt yesterday. It really annoys him that this does indeed happen, like the woman can't steer the boat. :PDT_Xtremez_12: He said it annoys him to see woman and girls of all ages at those heavy locks when there is at man sitting at the steering wheel. He recons this is why many of them are so fat!!! He does his and his wife steers, he said it is his exercise!

If you are replying, hit the "Go Advanced" selection and then hit the "Manage Attachments" button.
Then look for the hard to find "Add Files" button in the top right....:)

Then you can upload pictures directly from your computer and Yo stores them for you.

re posting pics

It is better if you resize your pics first.
Probably practice a trial run first with some duplicated copies - you don't want to lose anything by making a mistake !!

Join a photo host - just Google 'photo hosts' and a list will come up). I use Photobucket which I find easy.

In Photobucket, click on 'upload images' and then 'Browse' - your documents will come up. Select the image you want and click on 'Upload'
Wait a second and it will upload into Photobucket.

If you have a lot of pics you can use the 'BULK Upload' facilty (this takes a few moments to activate) you then follow instructions to upload multiple pics.
When you have all you required photos, you can then resize them smaller.
Click on an image to bring it up on screen.
Click on 'resize' (options are above the image)
Click on 'message Board' size.
wait a second for the picture to resize, then you can save it back to a new folder in your docs. (a seperate folder so you will know the resized pics from the others). Right click on the image and 'save as' (save in where ever you want it to go in your docs).

To post the pics on the forum, copy the image code at the bottom of the pic, then paste it onto a reply. (right click on the image code, select 'copy' then go back to forum and in a reply click 'paste' - then you submit the post. the pic should come up ok ).

I think that's more or less it ! :)

St James' Mount shown on the 1848 os map [LRO] attached. The 'well' can be seen just left of the Huskisson Memorial. It was stone quarry at first, but in "1767, in order to provide work for an unusually large number of unemployed, the Corporation of Liverpool laid out the western side of the site as an ornamental garden known as the Mount or Mount Gardens" [quoted from LRO online cat. 352 CEM/3]

Stone supplies to rest of the quarry were exhausted by 1825, and a decision was made to turn it into a privately run cemetery - which offered an alternative to the now overcrowded church cemeteries. The cemetery was consecrated on 13th Jan 1829. It was still some years before the big municipal cemeteries like Toxeth Park opened.

Don't remember when I took this. I like the way the red life thingy stands out. I could sharpen it as it was early morning mist I think but I do not alter my pics at all, I want them to be the colours I saw. Same with my beach pics. For me I like my pics natural.

Oh no. Sorry to hear this view has gone. I took a few pics there that day. I loved the lamp post and that whole 'look' I took quite a few pics of Matthew Street and the Grapes that week too. The fireplace inside the Grapes also. Good memories for me

Yes, some photos do suit it but I want to remember what I actually saw and how it was. For me the mist and greyness was part of it

Thanks for this pic, Ronijayne. The photograph on the Seven Streets (http://www.sevenstreets.com/features/total-eclipse-of-the-heart-mann-island/) blog shows the rather, to my mind, shocking transformation of the same scene... and the title of the blog entry "Total Eclipse of the Heart - Mann Island" editorializing on the change of scene says it. http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a177/veronicajayne/Southstreet%20Seaport%20May%2031%202010/DSC03739.jpg

Thanks Maria, I pulled it back up as someone just put a photo of her on another thread and the info, lol He is stealing my ship:PDT_Xtremez_12: It was restored and you could go on board but they just did another restoration.

You buy a ticket at the Seaport museum shop and you can go on two of the ships and to the museum. One of my favorite places. I am so glad NYC decided to adopt the abandoned WAVERTREE, put her back to her former glory and she stands majestically right in the center of the Seaport.:)

YAY

Was just talking to someone about the Wavertree

Is the sister ship Allerton (a good Liverpool name) still around?

All I could find was this, which says it had a similar fate to the Wavertree....

I should download pics from the book, such beautiful ships, Wavertree seems to have been painted so often. They love her here. Millions have been gladly spent putting her back to her old self and hundreds of 'shippy people' work on her with such dedication. I wish we had the Allerton too. I shudder to think what has happened to her. She was OK when we got Wavertree as you saw, she helped the limping dazed Wavertree into the Seaport
