View Full Version : Your Song of Sadness....
theninesisters 01-28-2007, 05:54 PM Everyone has a song in which they'll hear and they'll either shed a tear or stop and think at a major point that happened in their life - usually sad.
Mine is Sinead O Connor's - Nothing Compares To You.

What is your sad song - obviously you don't have to go in to personal reasons if you wish!
(Now there's a nice cheerful topic for you all) :)
MissInformed 01-28-2007, 06:40 PM What a cheery topic for a Sunday evening!! hehe a good thread though :celb (23):
Mine has to be 'No Distance Left to Run' by Blur....it has to be the ULTIMATE break up/tear jerker for me....

Pink Floyd..Free Four..
The memories of a man in his old age
Are the deeds of a man in his prime.
You shuffle in gloom of the sickroom
And talk to yourself as you die.
Life is a short, warm moment
And death is a long cold rest.
You get your chance to try in the twinkling of an eye:
Eighty years, with luck, or even less.
So all aboard for the American tour,
And maybe you'll make it to the top.
And mind how you go, and I can tell you, 'cause I know
You may find it hard to get off.
You are the angel of death
And I am the dead man's son.
And he was buried like a mole in a fox hole.
And everyone is still on the run.
And who is the master of fox hounds?
And who says the hunt has begun?
And who calls the tune in the courtroom?
And who beats the funeral drum?
The memories of a man in his old age
Are the deeds of a man in his prime.
You shuffle in gloom in the sickroom
And talk to yourself till you die.
shytalk 01-28-2007, 09:54 PM I've been a Floyd fan since they started. Free four stands out because it is so different from their other stuff. When you get to my advanced age and suffer from the serious complaint of having a 68 year old body and a 19 year old brain you realise how meaningfull the words are. If you didn't listen to the words, the tune is a happy bouncy one, yet the words would be suited to a funeral dirge.
:037:
sweetpatooti 01-28-2007, 10:08 PM That one that's not long been out by the Streets - he talks about his father and says something in the chorus like 'I hope I make you proud' - reminds me of my Dad - and I hope I make him proud - I'm crying now - look what you've done:tear:
Brenda 01-28-2007, 10:19 PM Mine has to be "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum, it was mine and my late hubbies courting song.
Another one that I love is one from Riverdance called Caoineadh Cu Chulainn, its haunting but beautiful.
Gerard 01-28-2007, 10:22 PM I played this for months and months after my old Man Died.
Sorry..Dont mean t' put yer all on a Downer..

moogaloo 02-09-2007, 02:10 PM "Just when I needed you most" by Randy Van Warmer. When I broke up with someone and the words of the song are more or less what happened. Just when I needed him most. I was pregnant at the time. My beautiful baby daughter is now 24 years old, the youngest of my brood. Awwwwwwwwwwww! Boo Hoo!
kemble 02-09-2007, 02:44 PM Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears for Fears !

Til Kingdom Come - Coldplay
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVUa3H_Q7H4
Motorhemp 02-09-2007, 04:44 PM I'd have to agree I can hardly get through Hurt by Johnny Cash's without my head spinning and eyes watering.
I'd also say 'Carry on now wayward son' by Kansas, can't say why but it gets me, not the worlds best band or greatest song but it has an effect on me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB17uWuBrL0
Local band Jewel Thief do a song called (something like) 'Love is a waste of time' and I found myself very much reacting to it (Ok getting bleary eyed)when i last saw them even though I was trying to lean on the bar and look disinterested! Odd how music the weirdest sources can catch you out at the strangest moments...

PhilipG 02-11-2007, 11:15 PM One of the saddests songs i've ever heard - Honey by Bobby Goldsboro.

It was because of listening to Honey in the Magic Clock in 1968 that made me come to Liverpool!
Bunnyman 02-12-2007, 10:08 AM 'My old friend the blues' by the Proclaimers. Does my nut in when Everton get beat. :disgust:
chippie 03-25-2007, 05:30 PM I was a wee naked lad at my grandad,s wake when they all hushed to hear a lone voice of one of his son,s singing,"Danny Boy" I have taken it on board myself as my sad song because I found out later in life that grandad sang that at his Irish father,s funeral, and it has been sung at all the family funerals that I,ve been to since.
gorgeous 06-07-2007, 08:46 PM Mines also got to be HONEY by Bobby Goldsborough ,

shytalk 06-08-2007, 03:20 AM Aaron Neville. The grand tour.
This song is as sad as it gets.
***SOB SOB***
(george richey, carmol taylor, norris wilson)
Step right up, come on in
If you'd like to take the grand tour
Of the lonely house that once was home sweet home
I have nothing here to sell you
Just some things that i will tell you
Some things i know will chill you to the bone
Over there, sits the chair
Where she'd bring the paper to me sit down on my knee and whisper
"oh, i love you"
But now she's gone forever
And this old house will never
Be the same without the love that we once knew
Straight ahead, that's the bed, where we'd lie in love together
And lord knows we had a good thing going here
See her picture on the table, don't it look like she'd be able
Just to touch me and say "good morning dear"
There's her ring, all her things, and her clothes are in the closet
Where she left them when she tore my world apart
As you leave you see the nursery, oh she left me without mercy
Taking nothing but our baby and my heart
Step right up, come on in, come on in

shoney 01-23-2008, 09:31 AM every breath you take by the police, a mate of mines little boy 3 was hit by a car when it was out, he was 3 days in hospital before he died, it's always stuck with me and makes my lip curl
lindylou 01-23-2008, 10:12 AM I don't like hearing the 'Lighthouse Family' for the same reason. It reminds me of the funeral of a young child.

pasha 01-23-2008, 10:38 AM my endless love (diana ross, lionel ritchie) very sad it reminds me off my nana and grandad, my nana died 2 years after my grandad of a broken heart. and i think that song came out then 1978/79
Steven 01-23-2008, 12:55 PM I don't know why I love you but I do,,,,,,,,,,,, by Clarence Frogman Henry,,,,, who later changed his name, no idea why ?
lottie 01-23-2008, 02:57 PM Honey, In The Living Years, Father and Son and Ode to Billyjo are all tear jearkers. But the song which is saddest to me is Changes by Kelly and Ozzie Ozbourne, my husbands sister died aged 27 and gave her dad a letter 5 months before with the cd (they were really close). She new she was dying and it was played at her funeral.
Partsky 01-23-2008, 06:41 PM Yes this is a sad subject but then anything so powerful that it can stir up such emotions deserves mentioning, doesnt it? My Sister cant bear to hear "Stay with me" as we were nursing our deal old Dad (Johnny, the Fazakerley King) who passed away.
I hate football but cannot get through "You`ll never walk alone. Its not the Liverpool connection but the beautiful sentiment in the song.
Yes, "Hurt" by J Cash too but thats because of the weary and deeply felt way he sings it. Mind you, the 9 Inch Nails version is brill too.
How about "Brother can you spare a dime?". the most fantastic protest song about destitute men ever, and written so long ago.
I hate Neil Diamond but think "Solitaire" is a fantastic song, albeit a total wrist slitter, particularly for anyone recently chucked.
Happy Days are here again.............. I am off to put my head in a bucket
1.This was played at my dads funeral. My dad's favorite song, but it was also a reminder of his eldest grandson.
Luke Kelly - Scorn Not His Simplicity

2.This was nearly played at my funeral. One of my favorite songs from RT, When i saw him some years ago in Manchester he asked if there were any requests and i called out "the drunk" much to everyones amusement, but he played it. Strange thing was that i was sitting in the front row and centre isle and it felt like the entire audience were looking at me but i still cried at the sight of RT playing right in front of me.

drone_pilot 01-24-2008, 01:04 AM My eye waterer is Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton.
written just after the death of his son 'Connor'
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven
Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven
I'll find my way, through night and day
Cause I know I just can't stay
Here in heaven
Time can bring you down
Time can bend your knee
Time can break your heart
Have you begging please
Begging please
(instrumental)
Beyond the door
There's peace I'm sure.
And I know there'll be no more...
Tears in heaven
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven
Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven
Even just reading the words brings a tear to my eyes.
lottie 01-24-2008, 09:25 AM It is a sad song, must have been hard for him to write it.
