View Full Version : Yo! Liverpool History Tours?
MissInformed 01-22-2007, 08:57 PM Hi guys and gals
I have been thinking today, I don't know if anyone would be interested but here goes...
How about starting our own YoLiverpool history tours up? Not for money, just for something interesting for us all to get involved in!
We have some great experts on this board, and I just feel that we are not utilising our resources enough.
Certain people are 'experts' on certain areas i.e PhilipG is Dingle area, The Gardens is Gerard Gardens and all around there, Jona is great at underground stuff and Childwall, bells etc. See what I mean?
Even if it was one sunday a month, or whenever everyone is free.
I just think we would all really benefit from it...
I am ready for any suggestions/comments/the backlash, etc..... :)

A great idea :PDT_Piratz_26:
MissInformed 01-22-2007, 09:04 PM thanks kev...be good to see what everyone thinks!
theninesisters 01-22-2007, 09:28 PM I'd love to but I never get any free time and the time I do get free is either up a tower, in a pub, in my car or working on websites. I'll have to organise a tour of Childwall by printing off my website address on an A4 sheet where they are supposed to meet me! :Colorz_Grey_PDT_16:

I don't getcha sir...
Oh one sunday afternoon wouldnt kill you!
theninesisters 01-22-2007, 09:36 PM True, but why brave the winds when you can view a website from the comfort and warmth of your own room :Colorz_Grey_PDT_16:
MissInformed 01-22-2007, 09:39 PM cos that's boring sometimes!
we have a fabulous city, there are things you can't discover or appreciate on a screen or in a book
theninesisters 01-22-2007, 09:52 PM The daft thing is though, is that if you have a party of (I think) more than 5 people, technically people can actually sue you if they step in to the road and get hit by a car. We used to do tours of Edge Hill a few years back and because it was technically a tour, i.e. we had high-viz jackets on, we had to give out a disclaimer! It was daft.
Plus, most of the more beautiful buildings wouldn't allow such a party in just to give a private tour - and doesn't the Heritage Weekend do this for us by allowing everyone in to really private area's of Liverpool?
Feel free to make your own tour of Childwall and use my information...just watch out for the maniac on the Mountain Bike that has no regard for his local area :celb (23):

what happens on the other zillions of weekends in the year?
i don't even mean go into alot of buildings, even if we met up somewhere for a discussion group etc?
just to DO something...
you don't have to go, it's coool :)
PhilipG 01-22-2007, 10:15 PM I'm game, but not in the coldest part of the year, Carrie.
The Gardens 01-22-2007, 10:20 PM A great idea, Ged and I attended a Tyson Smith walktour in June last year. It was organised by Pat Neil from Friends of Liverpool Monuments, and covered areas in the City Centre where sculptor H Tysons Smith's work was on external display. My interest was derived from his work on the scuptures on Gerard Gardens, and I gave a small talk about their history.
A link to the FoLM site is attached, which details some of Smith's work, which includes;
The Cenetaph
The statue currently located in the Met Centre (it used to be in the Whitechappel Post Office)

It is very easy to walk past these nuggets as you walk through town, having someone guide you and providing detailed history brings them to life
It may be worth contacting Pat, I know he was looking to repeat the tour this year.

Oh you mean us lot on the forum? Then naturally count me in!! :celb (23):
I thought you were talking about the smelly public there, not us refined characters! A cracking place to meet where there is a bar is the Williamsons Tunnels Bar - more space than you want, quiet and I know the owner and bar tender very well! :PDT_Aliboronz_24:

I think this would be great Carrie, Since I found this forum my passion for local history, which has been lacking for 3-4 years, has been reinvented. I'd love to throw my hand in for sporting heritage, murders/mysteries and street names.
MissInformed 01-23-2007, 07:55 AM well this is swell!!!
Lets get organising guys and gals!!

Good idea Carrie?
Ron Formby who attends the Gardens of Stone screenings and made a valuable imput last saturday whilst talking about the old communities during the post screening discussion session, has for some time now been flagging up his tourism in the Vauxhall/Everton district project (TIV). Not wanting to be left behind by the Culture Company who many cynically see as just another quango who will only benefit the commercialised city centre, the TIV has been a great success on his first few runs. Many at first may say 'what is there to see in Vauxhall' - well, you'd be surprised. Like Paul, i'm all for this and would love to learn more about others areas too.
snappel 01-23-2007, 11:07 AM what happens on the other zillions of weekends in the year?:shock:You just have to be more crafty! ;)
Seriously though, it sounds like a good idea, and a good way for those with lots of local knowledge to impart it.
All the H&S stuff is rubbish though, it's like having to have a food handling certificate to run a barbecue. How did people survice before all this nonsense? Simple, they just used common sense. All health and safety does is prevent people from learning to look after themselves.

I completely agree Sir!
Would you be interested in taking part Snappel, if you're about?

this is a good idea paul
how would you go about contacting pat?
The Gardens 01-23-2007, 06:17 PM Pat can be contacted via;
liverpoolmonuments@gmail.com <liverpoolmonuments@gmail.com>
I also attended the Tourism in Vauxhall tour last year, in which Ron Formby was both informative and entertaining. I will liaise with Ron to see when the next tour is planned.
I think there is scope to arrange our own Yo tour, and Ged and I would be happy to cover some of the 'city centre' parts of it. Perhaps in the spring when the weather gets warmer!
Gnomie 01-23-2007, 07:29 PM Cool Idea. i`d be in

cool Paul
As jona suggested, maybe we could all meet up in the williamson tunnels bar and have some discussions for now. Then arrange some walkabouts in the spring!
Again, good ideas. Those that meet up could thrash some ideas around 'the table'.
MissInformed 01-23-2007, 09:27 PM will you be joining us kev?
shytalk 01-23-2007, 09:31 PM Wish I could come, maybe we can arrange it when I come next year. :037:

Pat and I are thick as thieves on various projects over the past couple of years. We either meet up or chat every couple of weeks and we're working on a couple of things at the moment. I know for sure he'd be delighted to do a Yo History Tour. If you want to contact him by phone to dicuss a Tour, PM me.
My bikes suffered another puncture to go around places.:Colorz_Grey_PDT_16:
