I went to Boaler St, New Hutte, Colwell and West Derby Comp. Our headmaster at West Derby was Tom Saunders (http://www.lfcbootroom.net/saunders.htm) who was also the manager of Liverpool and England schoolboys footy teams. He went on to become Youth Development Officer with Liverpool FC.

Lidderdale for a little bit, then Pleasant Street(the old building) and onto Morrison Primary which Is now Greenbank Primary(also Lidderdale Is now part of It). Finally Calderstones.

Glad Schools over hated Calderstones the most though and I'd flip the finger at certain teachers from there If they said hello. I never walked out of classes till I went to Calderstones.

The schools were full of cowards who would ever touch me on their own.

Banks Road. Miss Lacy was the headmistress. After Banks Rd School was bombed we had teachers come out and teach us for 2 to 3 hours per day at different homes in the neighbourhood. After almost 2 years of very little schooling most of us from Banks Rd where sent to Duncombe Rd school. I absolutely hated it, the headmistrees was a woman named Miss Baldwin, just seemed like she was not happy accepting all the extra kid's from Banks Rd, she was a little hard on us. Duncombe Rd School was an all-girl school, really missed Banks Rd.

I went to St Charles on Aigburth Road. We were in the annexe which was an old Victorian house called South Grange, which stood where St Charles parish club is now. The building was falling down around our ears and eventually we moved into what had been the Rivoli cinema next door. All the seats got cleared out and partitions were set up to divide it into classes. At playtime we went down into the basement where the snooker hall had been.

My first job from school was a television and electrical shop in Edge Lane. I would take the shutters down, yes even in 1967, clean the doorway and open up for business. I worked 6 and a half days a week including Saturdays, my favourite day when I,d be watching Doctor Who before I closed up shop to walk home to Desmond Street, off Breck Rd and Heyworth St. I got five pounds commission once for my part in selling a radiogramme. Hi folks

I went to Quarry Bank High School (now part of Calderstones Comprehensive) in 1965-1967. The following pen and ink drawing with was done by me while in art class at the school. A pic I took more recently of the gateposts of Strawberry Fields is stuck in the right lower corner of the frame. I had previously posted this photograph in a Beatles thread but thought to post it here now.

While I went to the school, the headmaster was Mr W. E. Pobjoy who had been head while John Lennon went to the school in the Fifties (as most of you will know, the Beatles were originally called "The Quarrymen" and the group at that time contained John's mate Pete Shotton and other pals, before Paul and the others joined up). Mr Pobjoy was an unusual head for his day in opposing corporal punishment.

Webster Road till 1964 then Brookfield Comp in Kirkby till 1969
Very fond memorys of Webster Rd with Mr.Bradley class teacher on 2 occasions.
One day a week going on the corpy bus to Calderstones Park for our afternoon sports.
Also remember the swimming pool getting built in the basement.
Sign of getting old this is, have to keep popping the pills.

My old school. It's had so many names; I think it was originally called 'Anfield Girls school', then in later years, when my mum went there, the name was changed to 'Stanley park secondary school ' it was an all girls school but at some point they moved the boys in.
In the 1960s the boys were moved out and into a new building in Breckside Park. The boys school was Anfield Comprehensive'.

When I went to seniors it was girls only and called 'Stanley park Comprehensive'

After I'd left it was changed to 'Anfield Comp', then yet again another change to 'Priory Community school' (or something like that). They had moved the boys back in by then. They had demolished the boys' comp - for what reason it was demolished I don't know 'cos it was a good building with good facilities and nothing wrong with it.

Why couldn't they just leave it alone as Stanley Park ?? (which it was known as for the longest).
That's not the end of it .. it is now known as the ' NORTH LIVERPOOL ACADEMY'
I'm sure there isn't another school with so many name changes.

Just joined the forum so not sure how things work.

I went to King David's as a infant and then to Dovedale CP throughout the juniors. Ended up at Hillfoot Hey - leaving in the summer of 1976.

My youngest son went to St Margaret's and one of his teachers had been my teacher in Dovedale. I only found this out when the teacher reocognised me 30 years later at a parent/teacher evening.

Yes, It should have been built ages ago but protesters have held up progress. In fact progress is the wrong word - it hasn't even begun. :disgust:

Breckfield (the old John Hamilton) have been moved into the Priory rd school; both schools have been merged to form North Liverpool Academy. They should have been in a brand new state of the art building .. but instead the pupils & techers are struggling along in an over crowded, decaying and ill equipped school :disgust:
I was talking to one of the teachers last week who told me that some science lessons are restricted because of lack of space and facilities.

The protesters are stopping our local kids from having a good education in a new school.

Happy to say I live around the corner from Florence Melly School. The original school was knocked down about two years ago but was rebuilt with a more modern design the same year keeping its original name

hi ged,
just got your 2nd book, where you mention your school,st.Greg's,and various teachers, specifically mr.Crowley, who's son i went to school with!Your image of him with the cane, and keys,in reception, was pretty terrifying, but he always seemed a nice enough guy, when i was at thier house, and i always thought it was amusing that his son couldn't tell the time:unibrow: i went to the youth club a couple of times,(about '67,'68) but dont remember anyone's names, except pat gandy, for some reason, and a guy who's nickname was"beaky"! One memory i do have, is of the the girls in the youth club screaming in horror, when Robin Gibb,of the Bee Gees, started singing "massachusets" on "Top of the Pops", every time it was on:eek: In the book, you mention that mr.Crowley had a brother/clone? Was this really his brother? I also remember the rover car well! Great book, must get volume 3.

Hiya wsteve55. Thanks for that. There was an Arthur Vincent Crowley and his younger bro. I only found out quite recently that Mr Crowley senior was apparently quite a rugby player in his day and played Rugby and won honours though i've not looked into it any further. His singing voice resounded all over the assembly hall - Christius Vinschit, Christius Renoit or something like that anyway - all latin to me.

One had a brown Rover, the other, the same model in white. They were alright really looking back, if you had little to do with them that is. I remember someone drawing mammary glands on the cover of my lyric book to Joseph & his technicolour dreamcoat which we were rehearsing and he spotted it. I got the cane for not snitching (it wasn't grassing then) on the little toerag that done it because I wouldn't snap my arrow bar in half. I later changed that porn into a face lol.

Where did they live, was it a leafy suburb, I always imagined so.

Five years behind me but spot on.
Collinson was known as Collywobbles - really nice man who struggled to deal with the rougher kids.
Gertie - my mum would never believe what a monster she was until my sister started work, as a nursery nurse, at the kids home Gertie also ran. Tales of violent abuse were common.
How about Mr McGarvey (head - lovely man who saw good in everyone), Mr Galea (Maths - another sadistic *******), Miss Dunn (English), Mr Slattery )Science - hard but fair), Mrs Ahmed (Art - like a young Elisabeth Taylor).

Couple of people in my class who I remember and were from Garston. Names beginning to fade now - boy I'm feeling old!

Exactly my route also
Do you remember Mr Burns (Headmaster) and Bob Nolan (teacher) St Martins
He once told us each and everyone of you will either work on the Docks or at Camel Lairds.. Im Glad I proved how wrong he was.
Only ones I can really remember from St John's is Mr Collinson ( Frolly) and the Infamous Sister Gertrude and Sister Anne..... Gertie was one of the most sadistic people I have had the misfortune to come across in my life. constantly walked around with a cane under her habit.
She could use the cane better than Zoro could use his sword.

what year did you go to st patricks then??? Any chance it could be in the sixties????

Mr brummit was head of Clint Road junior. He always wore a pin Stripe suit, looked very severe and ruled with a rod of iron. He also looked exactly like Himmler, one of Adolf Hitlers mates.

I went to Garston C of E (Holman Rd/Horrocks Ave) Infants and Juniors before leaving in '77 to go to New Heys... Mr Howe was my Junior school head and Mrs Phillips (sp) was the Infant school head back then!

I never made it to New Heys though, 'cos we moved to Netherley during the summer and I went to Netherley (Community and) Comprehensive School - The Comp, to us plebs!... I was a 'B' block inmate at the Comp and had Barry Whitbread (ex-Runcorn and Altrincham player) as my PE teacher. Cracking guy - he played against Liverpool (Dalglish and co) at Anfield in the FA Cup and later emigrated to Canada to teach PE and footie over there. His son, Zack, later played for Liverpool!

Got away from the 'Pool when I was old enough, and drifted back over the years before returning home, North of the border and then ending up in Norn Iron some 14 years or so ago! I still visit now and again and catch up with my bessie mate, who lives in Woolton for a couple of bevvies when I'm back.

The pic is of myself and my eldest sister circa '74/'75 when we were both still pupils at C of E.

I went to Bootle High School.

i did too. but as i'm a few yrs older i went back when it was still called warwick bolam before it amalgamated with contess. i also used to live in litherland its where i hung about mostly when i was a wee thing of 18 - the lithie & clouds & follies (well i think thats what it was called hopfully i'm not getting its name mixed up with fallows..) it was a rock night on a thursday. it was funny we'd spend saturdays all dressed up in heels & lippie all glam for clouds. then on a thursday night we'd be all long skirts & denim shirts tied at the waist?? with little sandals i remember that tied up your leg. doing a whole rock/hippie chick kind of a vibe! a little before your time you'd have still been only in 1st/2nd yr seniors.

two of my husbands came from litherland...say no more!! i like to keep a low profile & avoid the exes at all costs!! of course its just dawned on me that i have spoken about them on here before. so i'd just like to point out that of those i mentioned only one was from liverpool the other is not (thank god!!) so yes this does mean in my post i did kind of miss out the tiny fact that there are 3 ex-mr shoequeens & not two. i didn't lie exactly just withheld a little information... will i be shunned now as the black widow?? what can i say it was a phase i was going through. god/fate stepped in - what can i do to stop this girl from going down that bl**dy aisle again?? i know i'll give her a child with special needs who'll need her care 24/7. seriously no time/energy to date nevermind choose wedding dresses. i could be a nun...if i was catholic. never say never (after all do share my birthday with lizzie taylor) but i can honestly (mean it this time) say hand on heart i feel i've had more than my fair share of wedding cake & confetti to last me a lifetime...or two!

I, um, went to Farnworth Grammar School, near Bolton. But there is a Liverpool, or rather, Everton Link...

Its also the School that Alan Ball attended in his youth. The English teacher there, Mr Stevens, still remembered him. He used to live (his mother still did I believe) near to us, a few streets away by the New Bury area of Farnworth.

Another famous pupil was Kenneth 'They think its all over' Wolstenholme, who came from nearby Walkden. Now isn't that a coincidence?

Shamefully, the school became a victim of Thatchers fear of 'Elitism in the Working Class' mistake in 1983, and was closed, which had a profound effect on the rest of my education.

Fonthill Road Primary 1925 -30 Can only remember Mr Stott the
Headmaster who helped me get a scholarship, and two teachers - Mr Irlam
who took me in his sidecar a couple of times to visit my grandparents in
Ormskirk (his family lived near Burscough somewhere) and Mr Kaye(nick-
named Kay-Kay,after the toffee very popular at that time). We were divided
into houses - Livingstone, Shackleton, Shaftesbury, and Wilberforce (I was in
Shaftesbury).
Alsop High 1930 -36. Mr Halford the Headmaster. He fought a losing
battle trying to persuade us to to lose our Scouse accents! I can remember a
few of the teachers - Mr Arundel who taught Spanish in between putting on
Gilbert and Sullivan operas (quite successfully) at Queens Drive Baths, Nat
Cooper the French teacher who just as unsuccessfully tried to convince us
that Rugby League was a much better game than football. And a few others,
but I'll stop there.
It's a sobering thought that for a brief moment they've been brought back!

Hi,
Anfield Road Prep Mr Applebee Headmaster and A Miss Keysloe when I first started.Remember the big Red Cannonball of Cheese we all got as did most schools at the end of the war.It was a gift from the people of Holland in appreciation of them getting back their Freedom TheWoans,Grattons,MacQueens,Hoggs.Hunter,Blackwell ,Paget all great guys
and good school mates.

Then St.Margarets Anfield before the Church got burnt Down.Mr Simpson "The Boss" ruled with a rod of Iron and swung a mean cane.Cossie the French teacher if you fell asleep and your mouth opened he could get a piece of chalk in your gob from 30 ft.Smithy a tiny man with a Synthetic rubber Boomerang, had no hesitation of belting you across the face with it.Then a teacher got me to try for the Junior School of Art.Hope Street and Gambier Terrace.I wanted to be a Naval Architect come Draughtsman.Almost a complete disaster as normal subjects were left behind. But it was great with mixed classes.I see a Mr Eric MacGill is still alive and involved in a new Art Centre of Some Kind and He is 93 years Old.and would still be a gentleman and good teacher as he was in 1948.Mr Ballard ex British Army Middle weight Boxing Champion. He used to take us for boxing lessons.A male model was "Kid Tanner" and he used to help Mr Ballard.
Managed to catch up on all the Studies and became an engineer.Went to sea and Became a "P*** Artist". I still reckon they were the best days of my Life
at all the Schools.Had the last 2 1/2 years of Apprenticeship in Scotland and did studies at Paisley Tech. Those Teachers were brilliant and all Scots.
School of Art just had the edge over them all though Best Regards Ken B:034:

I think you'd probably find it very hard to find anyone who had a good word to say about her. My mum always thought she was wonderful - Gertie could lay on the charm for parents - but had her eyes opened when my sister worked at as a nursery nurse at the kids home Gertie was based at, and told my mum how she treated the kids.

Hi Paddy,
Attack is usually the best form of defence - but should it be deployed against children, or adults because of what happened to them as children?
Indefensible.

Well Kevin heres an insight.

I spent my formative years in Nazareth house Crosby. My official history claims it was a happy time and we were all treated well. My own recollection is somewhat different. Thing is they have gone to great lenghts to cover up. In this country the Catholic Church has not had to answer and Liverpool that has the biggest Catholic community has remained in denial.Discrediting claimants is common practice and falsifying records another. I got my records from Liverpool social services. As a child they had quartly visits to check on children in care. The forms in my possesion state clearly the general state and welfare of the child. As in recording measles and the mumps and also School medicals. I have a scar on the back of my head that was the result of having three stitches after being attacked in the nursery. There is no record of the incident or my trip to the hospital. For that reason Kevin quite frankly they make me sick.

Good to know know you Kevin. I left school in December 1961 and left Liverpool in October 1962.

There is no record of the incident or my trip to the hospital. For that reason Kevin quite frankly they make me sick.

I know that feeling. In 1959 I spent 15 weeks in Alder Hey hospital, having had an operation to correct flat feet - most of that time in plaster from my toes to my knees (had to learn to walk again afterwards). Two years later my younger brother was diagnosed with the same problem but my mum told the doctor she didn't want him going through what I went through. The doctor said it was OK as they didn't do that operation any more. He was given insoles for his shoes, which corrected the problem and he has been fine ever since.

I've had problems with my feet for the past 15 years and was curious to discover what they had actually done to me. Asked my current GP to check my health records, and he rather surprisingly told me my records didn't start until 1960.

Coincidence?

Paddy
04-16-2009, 10:38 AM
Well I had the same problem collecting medical records I can remember having the stitches? put in my head even so. In my childhood view I thought the stretcher was an ironing board and the stitches were like little silver stars. It was a painful experience and the scar is still there. It was caused by an assault on me in the nursery and other welfare reports predate the incident which leads me to believe that it has been omitted. The person who assaulted me was a care worker and I think that the church was mindful of a scandal .Other things such as unnatural punishments are denied. It was common practice to be beaten with coat hangers and hairbrushes and that was by nuns .The regime was at times quite sadistic yet the institution was presented as a happy place for children in care. Things got much worse for me in other homes but I do feel that we as very young children endured particularly harsh treatment. Then when I started doing alright they sent a posse after me too make sure you don?t get too confident and remain little Patrick forever grateful to them for their kind care. Well this medium is one way of having a go back.

With the Irish Church being linked in with the state they made it possible to address the issue of cruelty in Catholic establishments. That has not been the case for those Liverpool children who suffered. Recently the Pope apologized on behalf of the church in Australia to children who had suffered in their institutions. Quite a lot of them would have been scousers who got shipped out to Australia not long after the war. They made a drama about it called the leaving of Liverpool. The point is that kids like myself who grew up in their institutions are portrayed as lucky well cared for children. The legal services commission won?t grant legal aid to approach them. So there is no closure and they have more legal power than their victims

I went to St Margret Mary's school starting in 1938. The young children who went to St Edwards Orphanage also attended junior school there. I can remember my mother would give me a a piece of toast or a jam butty to have with my free milk. One day I was eating my snack at playtime, when one of the kids from the orphanage asked me if he could be my wacker, he said he was hungry, so I gave him some of my lunch. I toled Me Mam about it, and the next day she put an extra butty in my lunch for Me Wacker. Most people at school had a wacker. In scouseology to wack out is to share. A wacker is a scouser. I often if the word Wacker originated at our school. It would be nice to think it did.

Good post Gerry lad. The weirdest school I attended was the school at the remand home on Menlove Avenue. They put me in there because I kept running away and going back to my Mam. Any road the system at Menlove was quite mad. If the teacher asked you a question and you could not answer you got hit over the head with a blackboard duster or a wooden wedge. Being a bright pupil I managed to escape quite a lot of knocks. If the teacher requested you stay behind that meant a hiding, and I mean a hiding.
