Lilies of the 'Pool
Paul Hoggart
Quirky tales of family life in 1920s Liverpool defy the well-worn rules of costume drama

Here’s a drama that defies normal classifications. Lilies, set in the back streets of Garston, Liverpool, in 1920, is an eight-part series telling the stories of Iris, May and Ruby Moss, three grown-up working-class sisters and their one surviving brother, Billy, living in a cramped terraced house with their widowed father.

The complication is that the Moss girls, like their dead mother, are all Roman Catholic, while Dadda Moss (played with magnificently conflicted volatility by Brian McArdie) is a staunch Orangeman from Co Antrim who has, by agreement with his late wife, brought up their two sons as Protestants. The family are devoted, but sectarian tension runs through their lives like a grumbling geological fault line.

Lilies starts tonight.
BBC1.

This is how they disguised the Woolton cinema.
They only used a corner of the interior, because the seats are too modern.

Well, I really enjoyed Lilies tonite (Episode 1) 1920's Liverpool never looked so good.

Was it Woolton Baths or Picton used for the baths scenes? It was supposed to be Garston Baths I presume.

Theres nothing more obvious than a fake scouse accent though.

Some scenes around by the maritime museum.

It made me laugh Kev - I loved it. It was supposed to be Garston Baths cos you could see the signs in the background. I loved all the costumes and hats and the history involved in it. I hope it is a good next week - that priest could have done with a good haircut though! And where was the vicar from our church? Was is Canon Swift then?

lol, yes. What a shame Garston Baths was lost so quickly :PDT_Xtremez_12:. Loved everything about it too, had a certain charm about it. That weird Post Woman though who did a runner from the underwear parade thingie was odd. When the sister stepped in that made me giggle, on the stage and the fellas were all ' fwoar!!!!'....

The Main sister (the swimmer) comes from Anfield and is the only true scouse sister there! The sister with the ginger hair comes from Essex and the quiet, more refined sister comes from Manchester, according to the Post.

The terraced street is in Hartley's Jam factory rather than Garston. Aigburth saw a little bit of filming too. The Promonade scene at the start was actually in Wallasey! I did find it a little difficult to believe that someone would go swimming in the river though, especially in the 1920's with all the heavy industry going on along the river.

On the whole a good show, suprised that the Pier Head wasn't shown in it's entirity, it was after all built then!

Jimmy, No I havn't read the book, I live abroad and am way out of touch with things over there, this forum was the first I heard about the series, I think an older director might have spotted the faults, young people just wouldn't see it(Kev must be an old fart :handclap: )
Wallasey, I used to swim in the river on your side in the 50's I think it was before the word polution was invented. :037:

The bit were the girls were smoking outdoors .. I find that very hard to believe.
Women just did not smoke like that in those days. My grandmother always told me it just wasn't done for a lady to be seen smoking a cigarette in the street. '' very common !!'' ;) - and this was the norm up until the 50s 60s perhaps.
Certainly in the 1920' & 30s it wasn't the norm.

Also, I thought there was too much modern Scouse speak - the actress who plays the part of Ruby apparently comes from Anfield - and her character sounded as if she was from Breck rd !! ha,ha.
The accent wouldn't have sounded like that in those days.

shytalk
01-15-2007, 05:35 PM
True lindylou,
Even when I was young I remember that women were more subdued then, they kept in the background in mixed company.
I think that I probably notice the language differences because I have been away so long. Language continually changes and not always for the better. A lot of changes I see by watching British TV.
Years ago there was a Victorian series' Upstairs and Downstairs', it was so well produced and researched it was just like being in that time. Maybe modern producers should study it when doing period plays.

Is anyone bothering to watch?

The story is begining to take shape.

shytalk
01-22-2007, 07:14 PM
I watched episode 2, I thought the storyline a bit far fetched, even in those days I would imagine he couldn't keep his problem secret, what was the point in him wanting to marry her, seems like he wanted a maid not a wife. And the cruel joke with the rabbits seemed a bit unlikely too.
Looking into future episodes I think I can guess where the story is going on the sister in domestic service. nudge, nudge, wink, wink say n'more.:)

.

I am watching Lindy - I love it actually.

The writer is the cousin of a lady who goes to our church - an old Garston girl so knows her stuff. I didn't know she was related to her but she tells us all the tales of the old days (they are so funny) and I jokingly said to her "Is that you they write about on Lilies?" She said "actually it is my cousin who writes it - so part of it could be!" The lady is a joy to listen to - I have told her to put pen to paper herself and gives us all a good read.

A very good episode from a lot of different views.
It was true that families were split up when they went into homes.
And farmed out to Canada.
And it was still going on in the 1950s and 1960s.
I knew a family of 4 children in the 1950s who were in 3 different childrens' homes, and were never to live together.

shytalk
02-04-2007, 07:23 PM
I agree, #4 was a good episode. Again though it had modern traits. I think catholics here will agree that even back in the 50's and 60's young kids would never have spoken to a priest the way the orphan kid did. Also can you imagine kids in those days refusing ice cream?.
Sad situation seeing them split up and the priest being helpless after making his promise.
I never knew what a Tally man was, I had heard the expression but thought it was something to do with money lending. :037:
The cappers on UKNova were lazy, I didn't get it 'till Sunday morning.

PhilipG
02-04-2007, 07:52 PM
The tally man was somebody who sold goods on credit.
I didn't understand what they were trying to make him out to be.
Some sort of bailif?

shytalk
02-04-2007, 07:56 PM
They were making him out to be a govt. official checking on overcrowding from what I understood. :037:

I know many working class Liverpool born and bred people in their 70s and 80s who do not speak with the stereotypical Liverpool accent portrayed in Lillies. So what what was the accent spoken in Garston in the 1920s. I have an aged friend who mentioned that the Garston people had their own accent which was different from the Liverpool accent imitated in Lillies.
Has anyone any views on this one.

It was mainly concerned with Billy's relationship with Nazzer - his pal from the Navy.
Nazzer was left with no legs and only one arm, and he was living in the Turner Home.
Billy's family had Nazzer to tea, and Nazzer stayed the night in Billy's dad's bed, where he ended up with Billy sleeping with him.
Unfortunately, Nazzer died of pneumonia, following a dip in the Mersey where he wanted Billy to let him drown.

Thanks for that! Hopefully it will come out on DVD in the next few months, sadly they haven't said weather this will happen or not!

It's great hearing all these old places mentioned in the script. I was glad to hear "Bunnies" The great department store getting a mention and also Uncle Joes Mint Balls which are still being made today in Wigan.

Seeing the Matchworks building going up back then must have been strange seeing as it is all white and not made of brick and stone dressing like it's older neighbours.

jona76, It has been quite good, it has improved with each episode. As an old fart I am probably more critical than younger viewers, just from the fact that I remember how thing were from a time period about 20 years after the time this was set in. There are a lot of things in the vocabulary and manner of speech and also the behaviour that I notice that a younger person might not. :037:

Last Friday's episode was the best. I found it very moving and had a tear in my eye. It makes you think how those young men suffered in the war.

I'm wondering now if Billy might take up with that girl Queenie .. he might do -to try and hide his sexuality.

Also, looks like Iris is falling for the priest do you think ? Or maybe she might become a nun.

OUTCRY AS BBC AXE LILIES!!!!

LIVERPOOL drama Lilies has been axed by BBC chiefs amid criticism of its “working class” audience.

BBC One controller Peter Fincham wrote a memo to staff saying the show would not see a second series.

Friday night programme Lilies had attracted a loyal audience of up to 4.5m, more than some episodes of Match of the Day and Comic Relief Does Fame Academy.

But Mr Fincham made his decision partly on the grounds that viewers were “largely older and predominantly working class.” :PDT_Xtremez_12:

The views were contained in a memo seen by the ECHO.

Merseyside MPs today expressed anger at the decision.

More than 2,000 fans of the programme have paid tribute to the 1920s period drama on its website, some expressing anger after news of the BBC decision leaked out.

Lilies was penned by Liverpool writer Heidi Thomas, who set it in her native Garston, and featured a strong Merseyside cast and crew during its eight-programme run.

She said: “ Lilies was special to me, as it was based on my family history.”

Despite the BBC axe, Lilies’ success has already been recognised by the Scouseology awards, nominated for a gong in the ECHO-sponsored TV category in the May ceremony.

Bootle MP Joe Benton, said: “It is very petty and hard to understand. The Controller should explain precisely what he means.”

West Derby MP Bob Wareing, said: “This appears to be an insult to the working class and the elderly.

“They are the people who built up the wealth of this country.”

Cllr Joe Anderson said: “It is appalling and discriminatory.”

It is, no other way of describing it. One of the Beebs best dramas too. Maybe if it was filmed and set in Manchester it would be more palletable for them. Hell, why don't we just admit defeat in the face of predudice and discrimination? They want to keep portraying poor stereotypes of Liverpool don't they? Any coincidence that we have similar other threads on here about the same thing in the wider media? I don't think so....

the reason it was cancelled was there was no wobbly camerawork, speeded up bits and slowed down bits, or girls with trousers so low you can see the top of their cracks, which means only people over 35 can watch it, BBC must spend a fortune on demographics for no apparent reason, as they dont sell advertising.
Peter Grant is usually a vey good reporter I have known him since he wore short trousers in the Giro in house magazine and he is usually very accurate although he once did a review of a Frankie Vaughan concert he didnt attend and got a thank you letter off Frank......

They've have their working class on TV still, will just keep 'em to to Reality TV shows!

Or have ex stage school fake working class actors on tele portraying a warped idea of working class life. :PDT_Xtremez_12:

What were they scared of? Maybe too many big houses and beautiful palm houses were shown by mistake (surely only London has the exclusive right to period dramas).

Oh, I know, they couldn't attach any merchandise to it!

The Echo has apologised on page 3, (I wasn't looking there for something else - honest) about their headline last night saying that the beeb has not commisioned a follow-up due to it only being viewed by the working class and elderly. It seems this wasn't the case now. However, we still await a satisfactory explaination as to why there is no follow up as the loose ends surely suggest that one was in the offing.

As the old journalist saying goes; "never let the truth get in the way of a good story"

I still don't understand why it was not scheduled in the Sunday 8pm slot? The Friday night slot is normally set aside for middle class family comedies such as Our Family; ah, now the penny's begining to drop

So, you don't watch TV at all, because the licence fee has to be paid no matter what you watch.

Me mum watched the whole series and was made up to see the Hospital wards - they were filmed in the now (part fire damaged but hopefully more secure) abandoned Alder Grange nursing home just behind Alder Hey. Ma was one of the care assistants there and recognised the place straight away.

I only regret not having a propper nose around there just before it closed down!

Even though it was supposed to be the Turner Home, I didn't think it was their wards, because they seem to respect the residents' privacy.
Whenever I've been on a visit to the Turner Home, the public only get to see the Chapel, and of course the entrance hall.

Just been watching BBC and there maybe a glimmer of light for a second series of Lillies. Fingers Crossed.

I saw that.

I wish they would consider a new series. There's so much more that could be added to the storyline.

I got distracted by Jona talking about 'currently active users !!' :D

TV producer lady said;

she was overwhelmed by the response to Lilies and 'rather touched' by all the letters and calls. She said that they would have to think about it but she couldn't commit to saying if it will make a return.

So we are none the wiser really Gnomie.

As Kev said, it could be hopeful tho' if we keep our fingers crossed.

Go on, blame me :)

What we should all do for a charity night is to select a nice quiet pub in a good location and we should all turn up in really old clothes. All the lads wearing old fashioned suits, top hats and the like and all the ladies wearing big frilly dresses!

Turn up one by one in the pub without telling the landlord anything and watch everyone's faces when they enter the pub and think they've had a Tom Slemen 'timeslip' :)

I'd like to see another series of Lilies, but wasn't it based on a book, and wasn't it only intended as the one series of 8 episodes?

People power sways BBC to rethink Lilies

After weeks of protest and literally thousands of complaints, the BBC finally relented today and confirmed that it is rethinking its decision to cancel the period drama Lilies.
