View Full Version : Johnnie Gianellis Chippy
The Gardens 01-07-2007, 04:27 PM Does anybody have any pictures of Johnnie Gianellis Chippy that was located in Islington? It was demolised to make way for the now derelict TG&W Union building. Gianellis was world famous, as many of the stars who played the Empire used to end out for a portion of chips, mushy peas and fishcakes. Johnnie with his brother Frank and his sister Marie, were well known characters in the area.
A picture of the left side of Gianellis and one of Frank & Johnnie attached.
Paul, haven't you got that other pic, the one with the Gardens in the background that causes all the 'aaaahhhh's in your film? There's a story on the scottie press site about kids damaging the Hannah May Thom statue that was in Standish Street in the 1960s and Frank was in the local pub with his mates who were alerted and ran out to chase the culprits. He was apparently revered down in the Holy Cross parish and was a main part of the May Queen procession organisers.

This photo has just taken me back 40 years  :handclap:

There's a Joe Devine piccie special for yers.
Gerard'l have that one too I bet.
There were two tables in there. A white marble one and a wooden one and one big long bench at the back which ran along the length of both tables.
There was Maria working the spud cutter and Frank and Johnnie serving their great fish, chips and mushy peas, all in last nights echo, finish off with a screwball with a pink chewy in the bottom.

Hiya Graham, glad to hear the Gianelli's are still going strong. Whenever Gerard Gardens is spoken about by the older community, Gianelli's chippy always gets a mention and it does so too in the locally made film 'Gardens of Stone' I expect you've seen the pic below too. All the best.
Sorry, yes of course, i've just noticed the same pic off the Scottie press website is in message No.1
