There will be a special feature in tomorrows (6 Jan) edition of The Daily Post, on Ged Fagan's In A City Living book. Part 3 of his inner city trilogy, it covers the tenements in areas such as Wavertree, Toxteth, Speke and Garston. Ged has also made a scale model of Gerard Gardens where he grew up.

Thanks for the alert Paul, any excuse to get 'another' bad pic of me on the web - that should answer your question Kev. Thank you all for your support with the books, I haven't even seen the article myself yet, I was taxi-ing my girls from clubland at 5am then the Sky Engineer rang at 8am to say he'd be with me within the hour so I feel gozzonked - and all while the little mites sleep.

Me ald feller asks Ged does your book mention Birley Baths and skinny dipping ? :D

Ged
01-08-2007, 10:58 AM
Birley baths ey. Does he mean Burroughs baths (complete with cockroaches). There is a pic of the water rats, the local lads who in the early 1900s used to skinny dip in the canal at Burlington bridge which was warmed by the Tate & Lyle flushings. I lived off Burly from 93 to 98 after Burroughs (originally a wash-house) had made way for the Kingsway Wimpey 'apartments'.

That is also on the Reflections of Liverpool website Philip but they're walking to Clare st wash-house. I saw one somewhere of Burrough's baths frontage on the street itself but wracking my brain now.

Ged.
Did you know that Clare Street Wash-house and the Library were built on the site of the old Adelphi Theatre?

Ged
01-11-2007, 11:35 AM
Yes Philip, read that somewhere, possible the records office. Philip Christian was a potter who appearently built a house out of the remains of Gibson's folly that stood on a market site there. I read somewhere too that the Adelphi theatre was also known at one time as the circus theatre which gave rise to Circus street being built opposite which ran down to Byrom Street. Some great history in the area. I also have a pic of people standing outside No46 Christian st taken on 6th Oct 1926 to record the site of tthe old Adelphi theatre which was next door. It's in my book 2, will try to post it later.

Is it from the Record Office?
Have you any of the theatre at that date?

A potted history of the Adelphi is 73 on the "Some Liverpool Cinemas" thread:

Just to let anyone know who may be interested.

I am at Editions, 16 Cook Street on friday (the Peter Ellis building) signing copies of my books, kindly set up by Ron Formby of the Scottie Press.

I will also have my model there as the Echo are calling in to do a review.

Updated pics of the model can be found on my 'Model views' page on
www.inacityliving.piczo.com/

You don't have to buy a book - honest, so if you're in town and want to pop in for a chat or a peek, please do so. I'll have some folders/photo albums of pics of Liverpool there too and the framed resident lists.

Cheers,

Ged.

There was an open-air baths in Burlington Street, next door to the Burlington cinema.
The cinema was destroyed in the war - don't know if the baths survived.

Was it you, Ged, querying about the street name on the washer-women photo?
I've got an 8 x 10 from Oxton Studios, but the background is so out-of-focus that it's impossible to read.
Only the first 2 women are in focus.

Thanks to Olwen McLaughlin (Editions owner) Liam Fogherty (ex bbc & Elected Lord Mayor campaigner), Colin Dyas (Liverpool Vision) Una McCauley (Una Voce operatic society) Peter Grant (Echo) who all showed incredible support as well as a number of local ex residents who came to chat over a cuppa and biccies.

The model is down there until next Saturday with other displays lined up throughout the next few months.

I was humming & haa 'ing about coming into town - I would have popped in to say hello. However, as my son was off school for Half term and refused to come into town with me - and then torrential rain started ! - I ended up staying at home.

Glad it went well Ged. Pity the weather turned out awful and the rain so heavy.

Thanks Sweetcheeks and Kev.

The books are mainly about the tenements but do feature where possible, pics of what was there before, usually slum courts or delapidated commercial properties - so there are street scenes of surrounding areas. West Derby being a bit 'porsh' isn't really featured at all.

Myrtle Gardens are in the books and also feature in the Gardens of Stone film. The next screening (we think, as Paul is away at the moment so is subject to confirmation) is at the Lee Jones - League of welldoers at Limekiln Lane L5 on monday 26th Feb, but this can be confirmed next week and the time etc.
