Just got back from 2 days at the Caravan club site in Thurstaston where I have been many times before. Its a cracking little site and the area is a jewel of Merseyside. Outside of the gates is "The Wirral Way" which is a developed Railway embankment that runs from West Kirby to Hooton - a distance of 12 miles. What a fabulous place! We took our bikes and cycled the first day from Thurstaston to Parkgate and had a home made ice cream and back again. That was a total of about 8 miles. Yesterday we went the other way and cycles to West Kirby and had a walk around.
Its abeautiful place and is well used by cyclists, horse riders, people with dogs, runners etc. There is a bird watch at Thurstaston where you can sit in the hide and watch all sorts of birds feeding.
Then you can walk on the shingle beach at the Deeside sailing club. Such a lovely area, I recommend it. Turn into the road opposite the Cottage Loaf pub, Telegraph Road, Heswall and follow it all the way down to the bottom. :snf (41):

Yes, it's very pleasant there. Had some nice walks there in the past, and nice in the autumn when the berries are out. Is that where the old station is Hadlow rd ?

I took a little drive up to Formby woods today , nothing much doing there though , not sure where all the squirrels have gone , you tend to see more in winter .

Yeah right Pabs. You mean Murder mile!
Yes where the old Railway station was linda. Theres also a static site down there. I enquired last year, £82,000 for a caravan! Apparently you buy the land too. My daughters like to pick the berries and one wants to be a professional berry picker when she gets older.

You can park the car where the arrow is on this map and walk on the beach past the cottages and up the steps to the bird hide/centre. If you get the weather, you could be anywhere.

Or you could go uo to West kirby where the sailing lake is and the sands looking over to Hilbre Island.

Was over at West Kirby yesterday with my kids UW. We had a nice stroll around the marine lake and it was really peaceful. We'd already been to Arrowe Country Park earlier. On Tuesday took them to Royden Park, another beautiful piece of parkland that becomes Thurstaston Nature reserve. Also drove through Wallasey VERY QUICKLY to ensure my own safety (sorry Pabs)

Jennie, if you do go to West Kirby and the tide is out you might want to take the opportunity to walk over to Hilbre Island. Lovely walk over the sands and Hilbre itself is really interesting.

Unfortunately, most of the red squirrel population has been kiiled off by a disease carried by grey's,who are immune to it! Lately though, there have been some promising signs of an increase in red squirrels, with some attempts to keep the grey's out of the Formby reserve!

But beware the incoming tide! More than a few have been stranded on the island, or worse!Great place though, sometimes you can see seels swimming around, but usually some way off!

We used to too. Had some fun times there.
Been to Thustaton a few times, Thor's stone/Thurstaton common - went with the school too on a geography field trip. Great scenery across the Dee to Mostyn. We used to go to West kirby when the girls were smaller and somehow, as always with my trips, we'd end up at the Ring O' Bells pub with its great outdoor activity area that'd keep the girls occupied for ages. Parkgate and Neston are great too.

The Ring o' Bells was the first pub to go smoke free a few years ago.
Aye, I remember them being on the radio at the time.

Underworld, I know it well, been there many times. Not in a caravan but for day visits to the area. Used to go the Cottage Loaf (what is it like now), West Kirby marina, the Yacht pub at Woodside and Water World.

I had a pint in the cottage loaf a while back. Wasn't really impressed to be honest but there's loads of nice pubs on the peninsula. Gynsman, I was on the marina at West Kirby on Thursday. We rode our bikes to the bottom of the parade and were going to ride arounf the marina but no bikes are allowed! Still, it was a lovely day and is going to be a lovely weekend by the sound of it. A perfect place for a day out, take a picnic/ice creams etc

Hi Dave, welcome to Yo! As for the squirrels,I'm afraid they very nearly died out,at Formby, and a few other places, due to disease! Fortunately, recent reports suggest a recovery/revival of the red squirrel, has begun, which is great news!
