Can you rise to the challenge?
Here are the rules:
Post a random picture of the Liverpool and Merseyside area every day for a whole year.
Only one picture should be posted a day and at the end of the year we would have er....365 pictures of the area. How cool is that for 2007?
Camera phone pics, digi camera, SLR they are all welcome as long as the quality is decent.
Pictures must be your own, taken with your camera.
Once you have posted a picture you must wait a whole day before posting another. For example, you post on a Tuesday, you can post your next picture on a Thursday, that gives everyone a chance.
Comments: Are allowed as long as they offer constructive advice. Marks out of 10 are encouraged too.
Please include when posting the pictures location and other info if u wish plus today's date. Good luck!!!!
Thanks to Cissie B for suggesting this :)

It's probably because we have 2 cathedrals, and is used to identify it.
The RC one is also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral.

As far as I can remember it has always been called the Anglican Cathedral, back in the 50's 'twas so, that was long before Paddys Wigwam came to be.

The Roman Catholics always intended building a cathedral in Liverpool, so St Nicholas's RC Church, Hawke Street/Copperas Hill (opened 1812) became the Pro-Cathedral RC Church of St Nicholas.
This was probably from the 1930s when work first started on the Mount Pleasant site.

Does anyone know why Liverpool is the only cathedral city in England where its Church of England Cathedral is called the ANGLICAN cathedral. We don't have Manchester ANGLICAN Cathedral or indeed St Paul's ANGLICAN cathedral in London.London has two cathedrals also, the Cristopher Wren masterpiece, St Pauls, (Anglican) and Westminster Cathedral, the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of London. It is a magnificent structure, more closely following the lines of the eastern Byzantine style than traditional western European gothic. I think the Architect was named John Bentley. It was consecrated early in the last century and is well worth a visit.

they could use it for something, im fed up losing all the old buildings. i suppose St Georges Hall would make a nice multi car park.
Became the Hippodrome nightclub in the 80s after being the Futurist (probably something else in between too) isn't it a lap dancing place now X in the city I think ?- not that i've been there mind.
X In the City is next door to that building I think.

They were both cinemas.
The Futurist opened in 1912 as the Lime Street Picture House, and the Scala opened next door in 1916.
The first manager of the Scala was Vivian Van Damm, recently portrayed on TV by Bob Hoskins as the first manager of the famous Windmill Theatre in Soho.
Both cinemas were eventually taken over by ABC who closed them when they tripled the Forum/ABC (over the road).
The Scala became the Hippodrome and is now X in the City, advertised as a Superior Gentleman's Club. Honest.
This is the Scala from a 1916 programme.
The front was damaged during the war, and was repaired in a modern style.

I remember going to the Futurist to see Earthquake in 'sensurround', the seats would rattle in sync with the action on the screen. 2 further films, Rollercoaster and Battle at Midway, were shot using the same process before it was scrapped. I wonder how much the mangers of the Furturist paid to kit the cinema out!
I also spent of a lot of my wages in the early 1980's on clothes from Harold Ian, a couple of doors down.

Thanks very much, Dave.
I don't know about a website - I spend too much time on the PC anyway! :)
I've got a flickr page (is it called a page?), and contribute to the "Old Liverpool" group, and, of course there is the "1980s & 1990s Liverpool" thread here, and the other threads.
Unfortunately, I'm only too well aware that the Zenith wasn't the best camera in the world, and I always went to Max Spielmann's, so (especially nowadays) I can see that they're all slightly out of focus.
Peeps, take note that today ASDA's photo department gives much better results than Spielman's or Samson's (who crop too much off).
snappel
01-12-2007, 12:38 AM
Philip, you mention cropping - is this with digitally captured photos? Don't forget, a lot of digital cameras take photos with a 4:3 aspect ratio, so if you get 6x4 (standard) sized prints, they get cropped on the sides. Some places (Jessops for example) do 6x4.5 prints to deal with this. If you knew this anyway, ignore me, but thought I'd mention it.
Anyway, since I'm up so early, I may as well add to this thread...

Yes, a digital camera.
It was definitely the processing.
Samson's cropped all four edges, enough to know that wasn't what I originally snapped, so I took the memory card to ASDA & got them done again - which they did with more of the picture showing.
They were honest enough to say that slight cropping happens even with them, but it certainly put me off Samson's.
And ASDA's results are sharper than Spielman's, whose focussing was always rather poor.
Sorry Kev, if I've strayed off-topic.

Max, I'm talking about a long time ago, I used to go to school next door. It was definitely there when I left in 1954. It was a large orb with a spike sticking out of the top. I bet Jona knows about it. :037:

Hi Shy
Actually I always remember the tower as it is now so I probably never saw it as you show in those views. No wonder it looks kind of on the stubby side. Thanks for sharing these views with us, Shy.

Great photograph, Max! I did an acrylic painting for my parents' living room wall of a sunset from Otterspool based on a slide that I took in the mid-Sixties. The view was much like you show except that the tide was out and you had the reflection of the sun on the mud!
