View Full Version : Liverpool in the foreign media Sloyne 01-01-2007, 05:21 PM Liverpool got a mention on today, Monday 1, January 2007, CNN news bulletin due to the cancellation of last nights fireworks display. FKoE 01-01-2007, 05:32 PM I'm hoping Brian Reade of the Daily Mirror, campaigns for a four page pull out soveigner edition celebrating Liverpools 2007 .... are you reading Brian lad :D :unibrow: Kev 01-01-2007, 05:36 PM Lets hope its covered by our own media and they report exactly what Liverpool is celebrating this year!!!! Not just a 'big celebration'. FKoE 01-01-2007, 05:41 PM Oh aye agreed... its a lot more than a party aye? We want some history of the Empires 2nd City The Mirror has a country wide readership, and Brian is scouse, so I'm countingon him to pull some strings at the Mirror and promote Liverpools anniversary around the Nation. :) So we all send him an email ? :D Paul D 01-01-2007, 05:42 PM You can get a guide from the 08 place with full listings for 2007 priced £3.99,I reckon this will be a good souvenir.:) FKoE 01-01-2007, 05:45 PM There has been the odd 'vert on Granada promoting Liverpools plans for 2007 too aye ? FKoE 01-01-2007, 05:47 PM souvenir. Iknew that was how to spell it, but it looked weird when I writ it hahaha :D Paul D 01-02-2007, 03:53 PM This thread should be really interesting over the next 2 years especially, nice one Sloyne great idea for a thread.:PDT_Piratz_26: scouserdave 01-02-2007, 04:19 PM I think we get a better deal from the foreign media, although I think attitudes are beginning to change for the better on the domestic front:PDT_Piratz_26: Sloyne 01-02-2007, 06:22 PM Last week, the St Petesburg Times, in the 'hobbies section' had a write up for philatelists about the pending 'Beatles Stamp' release in the UK. Among other mentions of Liverpool in the article, it gave an address to write to in Liverpool for those interested in subscribing to the "first day cover" of the issue. Sloyne 01-04-2007, 09:59 PM The US Discovery Time channel are promoting a program about the Beatles, to be broadcast at 10:00pm., this coming Saturday, 6, January, 2007. The ad shows some great footage of Liverpool, old and present. I will try and watch it. Sloyne 01-13-2007, 02:25 PM The local (Tampa Bay area) cable TV channel Bay News 9 have just been interviewing the manager, Mr Noah Lagos, of St Petersburg/Clearwater airport (PIE) about attracting new business. He identified a number of opportunities for linking PIE with other airports, mostly Canadian, Caribbean and Central and South America. However, he did mention talks with some trans-Atlantic charter carriers and named Liverpool, among other "European secondary markets" mentioned, that are possible links for PIE. St Pete's/Clearwater airport (PIE) is across Tampa Bay from Tampa International Airport (TPA) and there is about a twenty minute drive between them. theninesisters 01-13-2007, 03:53 PM Watching For Your Eyes Only last night (Bond Film) one of the ladies in the film.....well it goes as follows: Bond - Your dress is slipping and so is your accent. Lady - No, close - I come from Liverpool! :celb (23): Sloyne 01-16-2007, 02:26 PM A small item in the 'St Pete's Times' recognising the 50th. anniversary of the opening of the Cavern Club in Liverpool. It erroniously gave it, the Cavern, the honour of being the "birthplace of The Beatles". Sloyne 01-18-2007, 05:04 PM Watched Johnny Mathis, live, last night at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater, FL. He gave Liverpool a plug (Four lads etc.) before singing a medley of Beatles music. I wonder whether any other UK city, outside London, gets as much press as Liverpool? I know the Beatles connection generates a lot of publicity for Liverpool, but hey, publicity is publicity and i'm sure it gives Liverpool name recognition that most other UK cities would die for. Ged 01-19-2007, 11:02 AM At least he got it right, unlike Sinatra who used to say 'Now for one of my all time favourite Lennon & McCartney compositions' before launching into Harrison's 'Something' :) ChrisGeorge 01-19-2007, 01:56 PM Watched Johnny Mathis, live, last night at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater, FL. Hi Sloyne I recall that Liverpool received some terrible publicity in the early 1980's. Of course the Toxteth riots and the strikes didn't help. I remember at the time of the Garden Festival there was a headline in a U.S. paper "Liverpool Builds a Garden on a Trash Heap" -- which was literally true but still seemed a bit of a slight. I do have some of the U.S. press reports from that time and will try to post them. Sloyne 02-07-2007, 02:36 PM The following appeared in the US magazine Mother Jones.http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2002/07/liverpool.html?welcome=true ChrisGeorge 02-07-2007, 04:19 PM The following appeared in the US magazine Mother Jones.http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2002/07/liverpool.html?welcome=true Thanks, Sloyne, for this link to the Mother Jones article "Liverpool's Heart of Darkness" by Verlyn Klinkenborg from the magazine's July/August 2002 issue with the rather scathing subtitle blurb "News: It was strictly business: The city's era of prosperity rested on the profits of the transatlantic slave trade. Today its idle docks are home to the memories of an ancestral crime." Why do I feel this is a slap at the city? Even though it's true. Even the author's sentence "I recently stood at the edge of the Mersey River, trying to imagine the July day 195 years ago when the Kitty's Amelia worked her way into the tide" seems a bit of an accusation with the name "Mersey River" like a barb compared to the usual "River Mersey" as a resident would say. By the way I see there is a new movie coming out called "Amazing Grace" which would tell the story of the famous hymn by the Liverpool slave trader turned southern clergyman John Newton. Here's the poster for the film http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/87/Amazinggraceposter.jpg From Wikipedia "Amazing Grace (2006 film)" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazing_Grace_(2007_film)) Sloyne 02-07-2007, 08:26 PM By the way I see there is a new movie coming out called "Amazing Grace" which would tell the story of the famous hymn by the Liverpool slave trader turned southern clergyman John Newton. Thanks for the information. I have seen the original manuscript for the hymn 'Amazing Grace' and know the biography of John Newton, so I can now look forward to seeing the movie. Sloyne 02-09-2007, 12:39 AM The French language network of the CBC have, on a sports program, been airing a segment about 'The Habs' owner George Gillett. Some excellent shots of Liverpool (the city) and surrounds and references to the passionate supporters of Liverpool FC. Everton FC also got a mention but I couldn't quite make out just what was said. I know there was mention of friendly and good natured rivalry ("bon ami etc.") between both sets of supporters. The segment lasted about six minutes and centered around whether or not George can divide his attention, and money, between the Habs and the Reds and do both justice. Wish my French was better. ChrisGeorge 02-09-2007, 06:25 AM Thanks for the information. I have seen the original manuscript for the hymn 'Amazing Grace' and know the biography of John Newton, so I can now look forward to seeing the movie. Hi Sloyne Actually I realize now that despite the title of the movie and actor Albert Finney appearing as John Newton, from the Wikipedia writeup the film is about the abolitionary movement overall so the story of "Amazing Grace" is but a part of the whole tale. So I wonder how much Liverpool figures in the flick. Thanks for the heads up of the CBC French language network coverage of the Liverpool FC takeover. In terms of what they said about Everton maybe it wasn't "bon ami" they were were saying but "bon bons" for Toffees ha ha. :celb (23): Chris Sloyne 02-09-2007, 01:05 PM In terms of what they said about Everton maybe it wasn't "bon ami" they were were saying but "bon bons" for Toffees ha ha.But football supremacy, just like military supremacy are fleeting things. Empires come, empires go and some day even the mighty Manchester United will lose it's present hegemony. But the Liverpool's, Chelski's, Arsenal's and Man U's just go to prove that money can buy success. Sloyne 02-09-2007, 07:35 PM In today's (Fri. 9, Feb. 2007) business section of the Globe & Mail (Canada) newspaper, appeared an article concerning the expansion of the Port of Vancouver container terminal to handle a 20 million teu throughput by 2020. The item named some international port operators who are in the running to operate the port including Dubai Ports and "Peel Ports who operate a number of UK ports including the very succesful Port of Liverpool". The item named some international port operators who are in the running to operate the port including Dubai Ports and "Peel Ports who operate a number of UK ports including the very succesful Port of Liverpool". Here's a link on Peel Ports (http://www.peel.co.uk/peelholdings/peelports/ports.html), wherein it is stated: "Peel Ports Division is the second largest ports group in the U.K. handling over 40 million tonnes per annum. Peel Ports operate the ports of Mersey Docks & Harbour Company, Clydeport and the Manchester Ship Canal, providing a broad range of port facilities and services to shippers and cargo owners." Chris Sloyne 02-11-2007, 03:42 PM BBC Canada reporting the football results last night, Saturday 10, February 2007 mentioned every result with great emphasis on Man U and Chelsea's win and Newcastles "come from behind" over a "Liverpool team whose European credentials are to be questioned", win. The only game and result not mentioned was the Everton v Blackburn game. But of course Everton, a Liverpool team, won that game. Good old BBC, true to form. Sloyne 02-19-2007, 02:40 PM Golfer Tom Watson gave Liverpool a plug in an interview with the St Petersburg Times after he won the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am which was played at Lutz in the Tampa Bay area. Tom said, "I've never even been this cold in a British Open, neither Carnoustie, Liverpool or Royal Troon was as cold as this". I think Tom was getting Birkdale and Hoylake mixed up as I don't believe Tom ever played in an Open at Hoylake unless he played in the 1967 Open. But hey, a plug is a plug.:) Sloyne 02-25-2007, 07:33 PM In todays St Peterburg Times, Sunday 25 February 2007, appears a column about the growth in attendance at Britains Catholic religious services. The columnist attributes the increase in attendance at Catholic churches to the influx of Catholic immigrants from EU countries like Spain, Portugal, Poland, France, Italy etc. Liverpool was mentioned as being "Britains largest Catholic diocese" which, "due to the archdiocese historic immigrant tradition is no stranger to offering services in the many different languages of their new parishoners". The article goes on to mention that Britain Catholic church, with only about 4.2 million adherents, equals the Sunday attendance of the Church of England which has 26 million baptized Anglicans. Sloyne 03-05-2007, 12:19 AM From todays, Sunday 4, March 2007, Toronto Star newspaper, a very interesting and, mostly, factual read. PaxCat 03-05-2007, 03:57 PM Hi and Here's a question: Last Saturday, just after the Liverpool Manchester game, we were coming back from the Wirral through the King's? tunnel (the more northern of the two), and before we knew what was happening, off we shot in the wrong direction and there was Bootle coming into view. As shocking as that was, there too coming into the road was a phalax, a real neon yellow security jacketed wall, of police officers arms linked, marching toward the city, escorting, evidently, a band of about 50 t-shirted, I thought, men, not rowdy or shoving, just striding along, with a line of police on horse-back in the vanguard. People had come out of their houses. Women in little bunches with their arms folded and children running to see. Helicopters circling. We couldn't pull over to leap out and ask anybody what was going on. I saw nothing on the news. What happened? Do you know? He mentioned Liverpool numerous times. His parents emigrated to Canada from Liverpool, he learned his humour from his parents and sundry other relatives from Liverpool. He returns as often as he can to Liverpool to replenish his batteries. All in all a great plug for the city. Sloyne 05-08-2007, 12:55 AM And another great plug for the City of Liverpool, this time in tonights Hamilton Spectator newspaper. Unfortunately the story following it concerns dog sh!te, something that would be more suitable to a piece about Manchester. :) Read and enjoy. http://www.hamiltonspectator.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=hamilton/Layout/Article_Type1&call_pageid=1014656316146&c=Article&cid=1178512484486 Sloyne 05-10-2007, 08:01 PM This article appeared in todays, Thursday 10, May 2006, Toronto Star newspaper travel section. http://www.thestar.com/article/211625 Sloyne 05-25-2007, 08:31 PM I have been listening to the local (Toronto) sports radio station The FAN phone in. The major topic today was the problems at Athens at the Liverpool v AC Milan soccer game. Liverpool FC and it's fans came in for a right sl@gging for their behaviour prior to the game. Most people blamed the LFC fans for the problems with forged tickets, no tickets, rushing barriers and drunkeness. One person who claimed to be a Wolverhampton Wanderers supporter said that trouble doesn't follow Liverpool Football Club, the fans "take trouble with them". There was lots of anectodes and the old Heysel and Hillsborough affairs were dragged up. All-in-all not a very good press i'm afraid. All-in-all not a very good press i'm afraid. the Greek police i.e. the people who had to deal first hand with the occasion, said they were pleasantly surprised with the behaviour of the Liverpool fans and that the Milan ones were more boisterous and difficult to deal with. I dont condone the actions of those with forgeries or rushed the gates at all, but the inconsistency of the reporting pisses me off no end. When Man United suffered serious overcrowding at Lille in the champions League it was all the behaviour of the French police and inadequate stadium that was blamed by the media. The fact the overcrowding was caused by a large number with forged tickets was hardly mentioned.
