View Full Version : Public Toilets/Conveniences
MissInformed 12-28-2006, 09:43 PM I know this sounds a little weird for a thread, but it has been in my mind for some time now.
There are some interesting public toilets around (Park Road, St John's Gardens, London Road)
And also, I often wonder how many underground toilets there were...I know there was a set in Victoria Street and one next to Petony's Buildings next to St James' Church...
I will take some pics in the next few days...
ChrisGeorge 12-28-2006, 09:45 PM Yes it is a bit wierd but.... interesting. There was or is a public toilet under the Victoria Monument in Queen's Square.
Chris
A.D.W 12-28-2006, 09:46 PM Interesting topic. A great shame none of them are open any more.
theninesisters 12-28-2006, 10:08 PM I know this sounds a little weird for a thread, .
You're not wrong there missy..... :celb (23):
Am I right in saying that the 'Roundabout' at the top of Penny Lane used to be ladies/gents?
Attached a couple of pictures, one taken by me at the top of St Barnabas tower while working on it!
Dont know how I remember but a survey a few years agoshowed Liverpool had less public toilets than anywhere else, with Aberdeen coming out with the most.

Hi Jona76
Great couple of pics of the former bus shelter at the top of Penny Lane, Jona76. Yes it was a bus shelter with I believe gents and ladies toilets.
Chris
MissInformed 12-28-2006, 10:18 PM seeeeee! everyone has thought about this!
i was just the weirdo who posted it!!:)
great stuff so far!
Alot have been knocked down, there's the remains of one in Garston Village, plus Lodge Lane and I'm sure there were public toilets at Otterspool, by where they used to sell ice creams.
There's still some left on West Derby Road near the bridge by Tuebrook police station, but theyve been closed for years. There used to be some on Broadway in Norris Green which have now been converted into some sort of beauty salon.

Hi Kev
I may be dreaming but I think the public toilets at Otterspool were set into the hillside along the prom.... or do you mean down in the valley by the old mansion, Otterspool House, where the ice creams where sold?
Chris
A.D.W 12-28-2006, 10:41 PM There used to be some next to Woolton Woods and these WC's have been closed for many years. The 'rest area' between the two sets of WC's have also been fenced off.

Its set back off of the road, don't think the toilets are still there but the Ice Cream Kiosk is still there.
theninesisters 12-28-2006, 11:08 PM There also used to be a set of public toilets on Childwall Abbey Road just before you go to the Abbey Pub at the bottom!

They closed the lodge lane ones.
They keep closing the public toilets and not building new ones!
The Sergent Pepper ones closed too, I remember going in there.
The one on Wellington Road in Wavertree closed after being burned out too and then bricked up!

You can still see the 'room' with no roof as you walk past though! I reckon you'll find MissInformed there :gossip: :celb (23):
There's recently been a newish public toilet installed at the top of Bold Street I think.
Thats **** though and not open sometimes.
shytalk 12-28-2006, 11:35 PM There was one in Green Lane, built into the high concrete wall about opposite Derwent Rd. I walked down there last year and it was gone. That concrete wall was pock marked from machine gun strafeing in WW2, was left like that for years. :037:
PhilipG 12-29-2006, 12:14 AM At last!
I get a chance to share this.
I can't remember what I photocopied it from.
Ken Martin is a Liverpool architect - responsible for the Conservation Centre.
Public Toilets were everywhere.
There were underground circular ones outside the Playhouse and where the roundabout is by Princes Park Gates.
The old Tram Depot at the Dingle had them.
The subway at Aigburth Vale.
The old railings for the underground one at the Rotunda are still there - I keep meaning to take a photo.
marky 12-29-2006, 12:34 AM The railings of an underground convenience exist in Stanley Rd(I took a pic a few days ago...will post it tomorrow)
An underground convenience existed in Upper Park Street.
The Horsfall ramp(Sefton Street) contains toilets as far as I remember.
The toilets on Aigburth Rd (near the library) still remain (not in use)
You can still see the 'room' with no roof as you walk past though! I reckon you'll find MissInformed there :gossip: :celb (23):
:unibrow:
ayjaykay 12-29-2006, 11:19 AM There used to be underground toilets in London Road/Pembroke Place that were filled in in the late 1980s, when the new above ground ones were built.
MissInformed 12-29-2006, 05:34 PM my mum just told me there used to be some in malta street L8...
marky 12-29-2006, 10:13 PM The Malta St one is the same one as Upper Park Street. This had 2 entrances with a thick bottle-glass skylight. Kids would throw fireworks through a smashed portion of the glass, for a louder explosion.
Here's the railings on Stanley Rd.
PhilipG 12-29-2006, 10:52 PM Here's the railings on Stanley Rd.
Thanks for the photo, Marky.
They're the ones by the old Rotunda Theatre site.
I wonder if they're the only (underground) cast iron ones left.
The entrance to some on Smithdown Road (not underground), near Hartington Road is still there.
MissInformed 12-31-2006, 02:37 PM I found a pic of the public toilets on Park Road in the 1960's.

Right on the Town corner of the cemetery.

Had no idea about that!:)
scouserdave 12-31-2006, 07:20 PM Didn't there used to an underground WC near to the North face of St George's Hall and St John's Gardens? I vaguely remember it in the late 60s/early 70s. I think the entrance is still there, but it's either closed off or gated up (scratches head). It's not far away from Merseyrail.

Oops! I meant South face of St George's Hall
PhilipG 01-01-2007, 06:28 PM I think this must be the only contemporary photo that makes a public toilet it's main subject.
It's by Freddy O'Connor and is in his book: "Liverpool: Our City - Our Heritage" (page 24).

Made a unique addition to that street when It was there anyway.
There were a set of underground toilets encased by railings on a triangular piece of land on the Holly Street, Christian Street, Richmond Row junction in the 1960s. I'm too young to remember of course but my older brother isn't, plus there's a slight pic of the railings in a pic I have.
Gnomie 01-08-2007, 01:34 PM There are some in Prescot. closed but very old. i will take a pic when im up there.
I hope this thread dont go down the pan:)

Ross08 01-09-2007, 01:25 AM There were some just off Leece Street, adjacent to St. Luke's Church. There are also some just beside the Liver Building - these were in use until recently but I'm not sure if they're still open.
A bit further afield were the undergrounds at Lord Street, Southport. These were vile and are now open as a wine bar or similar. I noticed this about 12 months ago... I haven't been to Southport for a while.
MissInformed 01-12-2007, 07:49 PM hmmm
thanks ross.
will have to actually get around to taking some pics of these this weekend, I have got a great little camera on my phone now, so I have no excuse!!
The Southport ones are a nightclub called 'Core' now.
PhilipG 01-15-2007, 05:14 PM The Southport ones are a nightclub called 'Core' now.
They were a restaurant.
Wonder if they closed due to food poisoning?
Eatwell in Catharine Street used to be toilets.
Closed ones which still stand in Liverpool are in:
Leece Street.
St John's Lane.
Park Road (They were built for the market).
Aigburth Road, near the library.
The underpass at Aigburth Vale.
Next door to Speke Road Baths (the front wall survives),
and others which have been mentioned in this thread.
Did anyone mention the underground one in Parkway?
I went past so Aigburth ones near the Vale on that tunnel you use to cross the road.

Only been in em once when I was caught short on my way home from school. The subway was notorious for muggings and the like but we never saw anything. In the gents there was an 'office' where presumably the caretaker sat...must have had a lovely smell while tucking in to his butties!!!
I believe this must be some pistake.

MarkA 01-24-2007, 06:16 PM There used to be some in West Derby village by the bus stop next to the Sefton
I believe these toilets were where a certain Mr Epstein had his collar felt for cottaging. Was it called cottaging in those days?
Ross08 01-24-2007, 09:41 PM You'd never have thought that there could be so much discussion about public conveniences. And it's nice to see that everyone's using the proper terms - no bogs or P*&S offices, not even toilets - just good old fashioned WCs and Public Conveniences.
The Southport toilets as a nightclub - I find that really funny.
And today I noticed that another part of Liverpool's Public Convenience History has been demolished - The facilities outside the Royal liver Building.
Pity I hadn't had chance to get a photo.
Remember though when public toilets were all over the place, now you can never find one. Council's are fed up with the damage and up-feep I guess. It seems you can now only find them in places such as shopping centres.
I know that in parts of Scotland I've visited the councils still provide the conveninces but charge 20p, I feel this is completely reasonable as the standards are always maintained and many have an attendant on duty at all times.
One thing I do find quite funny though is that you get a ticket when you go in - 20P ADMISSION, NON REFUNDABLE.

They were really magnificent and were probably built at the same time as the Victoria Memorial (1906), which they were behind.
There's a drawing of the interior at #19 in this thread.
scouse smurf 02-17-2007, 01:44 PM I know it's not quite liverpool, but there used to be some off south rd in waterloo (I don't know if they're still there). Will have to get a bus down there sometime and see if they're still open lol.
There also used to be some right by the front of south park in bootle. I remember a college lecturer telling us a story about him using his scanner on the police frequencies and hearing them describe an incident of 2 men being caught taking part in a sexual act there. lol
I thought most have them had been closed due to these sort of incidents and muggings etc. If they opened new ones, you'd need a bouncer on the doors at night !!!

The toilets at Lark La /Aigburth Rd are up for sale .. at last ! i don't know who in their right mind would want to purchase this building , the immediate area around it stinks to high heaven , due to the alkies dominating it , i was made up when the council removed the bench they used for their daily sessions , at least we will be able to stand & wait for a bus without retching
it'll be intersting to see what the building or perhaps land will be used for .

Starting at the corner of Suburban rd, there was the record shop called 'Kittos' - they sold sweets and icecream too. We used to love that shop 'cos you could buy your records at the same time as buying your sweets with your pocket money :)
There were a couple of houses, then another shop on the next corner of the entry and the Bowlie. This shop was called 'Erics' and sold everything from soap powder to potatoes.
Those toilets were almost next door to the shop ! More in line with the backyard of the shop though.
Come to think of it, they must have had to endure the pong going over into their backyard and kitchen window  lol !
The shops were closed and turned into houses many years back, the row of houses are still there - - but not the toilets, thankfully !! :D
I remember the shop owners very well. I remember Mr & Mrs Kitto.
Also Eric and his wife and daughter Yvonne.

disco 01-20-2008, 08:13 PM There use to be some underground toilets at the intersection of Everton rd, West Derby rd and Brunswick rd opposite the old Hippodrome cinema by Grant gardens
Stewy 01-24-2008, 02:03 AM Well this is a very interesting thread indeed! It's very sad that most of the public conveniences have now closed but this is due to the vandalism etc.
I can say that I used to use the Roscoe Street conveniences quite frequently on my way to and from work. It was wuite a part of my daily routine, leave for work, get a paper and a pint of milk and pop into the Roscoe's, reading my Post while I make my delivery... I even met my first wife shortly after leaving the Roscoe's one afternoon, sitting on the steps at St. Luke's as we both ate our lunch, Summer 1989...
Sad news the day they closed down.
It doesn't surprise me that they are now closed as many times during my daily / twice daily visits I have witnessed a stray log (i.e. one that missed the pan). I also witnessed a group of lads deliberately draining their bladders on the tiled floors and even a man delivering a log into a urinal because he would not wait for a sit down to become available.
Pure filth these people - - - Blame them for the closure of the publics.
May I also say that I never had the fortune of using the Derby Square conveniences but how proud I would have been to make a delivery in there.
PhilipG 01-24-2008, 09:08 AM They were all closed down because the Council wouldn't continue financing them.
Lime Street Station have just started charging 30p. :PDT_Piratz_26:
It always used to be free!
Stewy 01-24-2008, 01:48 PM It is sad to think that you should have to pay 30p (or any price for that matter) just to deliver muck. After all it's only nature. I've a feeling that this, in time there will be a massive problem with log dropping in the street. At the moment, a few conveniences still remain but it won't be long til they have all closed.
I used to actually feel quite at home when making a delivery at the Roscoe's, I got used to the feel of the cheap toilet paper, got used to the smell, even got to know some of the regular Roscoe users and the cleaner.
I spent a lot of time over the years 'on the pans' and at the urinals of the Roscoe's. We will never see their like again.
VSRY SAD
You could even use the toilet paper to trace the cartoons out of the morning paper and upon realising you'd used the last piece of tracing/toilet paper you could then use the morning paper to actually wipe your arse.

Skid Row perhaps?
Did any of these bogs have advertising posters up inside, maybe for the Star trek film or something because I remember someone shouting and swearing about klingons?

I had a fish & chip dinner in the cafe opposite there today (very nice, only £4, Salad too) and there were three winos and three "community officers" at the old loo.
The 3 officers ended up walking away with the three winos making interesting hand gestures! :)
There used to be a long wooden bench there, but it was taken away ages ago, because of the "undesirables".
gorgeous 01-24-2008, 05:28 PM Hiya Philip ,
Glad you enjoyed your fish n chips . mmm i'm starvin now .
The Wino's have been back in force along there latley , They have their drinking session on the bench outside the spiritulist church , Then stagger to the closed toilets Do their buisness behind the toilet block , then stay there & think their putting the world to rights normally ending in arguments . I'm glad the building has sold . Anything it gets used for has to be better than it being left the way it is .
The stench is unreal by that bus stop.

Ross08 01-24-2008, 08:23 PM Exmouth Street, Birkenhead town centre...
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i36/taxipix/EXMOUTHTOILETS.jpg
These toilets have been closed for some time. Being demolished this week.
Stewy 01-25-2008, 12:07 AM Another good shi**er gone! This was one of my favourite sh*t houses on Wirral. It's right on the corner of Exmouth St. and Conway St. I'll never forget visiting one afternoon, (I was on a trip to the Birkenhead art gallery), I did the usual, went into the sit down, took a seat and began to deliver as I read my copy of the early edition Liverpool ECHO. After I left the cubicle, washed my hands and left, an elderly man came shouting after me, you forgot your paper. He handed it to me, I thanked him and continued on my way.
I recall an awfull stench in this particular shi**er, with pools of urine on the uneven tiled floor and a condom vending machine that looked like it hadn't worked for 30 years.
That was my last visit to this convenience. (Oct 2001)
PhilipG 01-25-2008, 12:22 AM It's confession time now.
I've been taking interior photos of toilets for a while now, and think I've got one of this.
Is (was) it opposite Yates's?

lindylou 01-25-2008, 01:54 PM Those toilets in the Town hall are lovely - well, lovely isn't the word maybe ! attractive looking antique style. :)
Anyone got a photo of the most famous ones - the Philharmonic pub gents ?
Stewy 04-17-2008, 02:44 PM This is a topic which really touches me... I find it so sad when I see that some of the places I spent my happiest times have all but dissapeared.
Another favourite of mine used to be the UNDIES on Scotland Road. I called them the Undies as they were underground but it was also a clever play on the word 'Underpants' I thought that one up one night on my way for a sneaky John Laird (Turd) at that very establishment.
I always remember using the old Roscoes one afternoon around four 'o' clock. I entered cubicle two only to be greeted by the brown stained underpants of a chap who didn't make it hanging over the uplifted toilet seat.
I was in dire straits, Should I move them? Should I leave them there? Should I take them with me? Maybe they would be good as new with a little TLC. In the end, I relocated myself to Cubicle one where I relieved myself, Oh! the sheer relief. I'd worked all day not far from the Pier Head, walked all the way to the Roscoes to deliver my muck in style.
Happy memories hey!
For any serious Public Toilet enthusiasts, you may be interested to know that I am proud to own one of the original Pull Chains, the one from Cubicle Three. I now have it in my own toilet at home, Not too far from it's original Home. I often wonder how many hands pulled that chain when I am sitting there making a first class delivery.
Ah, so you worked for the post office too then?
Ross08 04-17-2008, 03:45 PM Stewy...
That's some tale that, but yes it is sad to see the old buildings going. Sometimes, it is the buildings you don't pay that much attention too, that you really miss when they are gone.
Stewy...

Without wishing to appear rude, I was merely expressing an interest in these public conveniences, which is obviously an interest you share with me judging by the posting quoted above.
I fail to see why my postings have offered 'too much information'. My postings are fairly brief and straight to the point.
I would like to make it known that I have an in depth knowledge of currently open and closed down conveniences right across the North West and it is indeed a topic of particular interest to me

... and as for me taking a picture of a loo in Spain - it was merely to show the difference between the filthy places we have here in UK to a pristine and spotless washroom with pictures on the wall, vases of flowers and scented candles - really nice :handclap: I've never seen anything as nice here.

marky 04-19-2008, 01:13 AM Re: Roscoe Street/Leece Street: The roof and some of the brick-work was removed a few days ago. It looked like some building material was being delivered via the open roof. The artwork on the Leece Street side had also gone. I can also remember a W.C. along Egremont Promenade, built into the wall.

I was in there last week. As I was walking out three women were walking in...I thought they were after me till they said they wanted to have a look inside...:disgust:
shoney 04-19-2008, 09:28 PM They must be the ones in the philharmonic pub, here in NZ some towns toilets are tourist attractions, this link is about the public toilets in kawakawa in the bay of islands

lindylou 04-19-2008, 09:47 PM Wow ! there's some interesting toilets there ! :)
The opposite happened to me Mark. I went into the ladies though it wasn't even the Philharmonic pub and they weren't even interesting. One of the women sitting on the throne challenged me and I just said I wanted to have a look at the insides.
Stewy 04-22-2008, 12:00 PM One the finest delivery rooms I ever visited was on a motorway service station. I forget the exact service area now but it was close to Junction 38 o the M6. The actual sh** house was maintained regularly, there were vases of flowers on the walls and by the sinks, bars of luxury soap were also available.
I had visited on the off chance, just expecting an ordinary sh** house for me to deliver my John Laird. In i went, nly to be greeted by the sweet smell of rose petals and soft background music.
You would be surprised how the sound of soft music can make even the most difficult delivery easier. Just outside the toilets was a small kiosk selling newspapers and magazines so I purchased a copy of the Daily mirror to see me through the delivery.
I must agree with you, some of the operators of these Sh** houses go over and beyond the call of duty.
:handclap:
