PhilipG 11-25-2006, 11:41 PM Beautiful pictures.
Isn't the Liver Bird based on the Cormorant?
MissInformed 11-26-2006, 09:36 AM supposedly it is Philip, that's what alot of books seem to think...

ChrisGeorge 12-10-2006, 12:04 PM Great photograph, Kev! :)
I managed to browse through David Cotterals book today, at 9.99 it provides pictures of the locations of 1000 liverbirds!!!
Brilliant!

Marky, fantastic pics. Keep meaning to take pics of the Scottie Rd one, but it's one of those fleeting moments whenever I drive past. It's a cracking piece of artwork. Many's the time I've been tempted to disassemble it (I reckon 20 minutes tops), slap it in my hire van and reassemble it in my back garden. Seriously:PDT_Piratz_26:
Two I snapped around Croxteth Park:

That bottom one looks like it has been well-used as a WAX-RUBBING. So there's an idea for the museum; so many museums and "experiences" offer "ready-made" brass images for the kids to do wax-rubbings of, and it would only cost buttons to have this kind of thing available in Liverpool Museums. Any other ideas what sort of things could be offered in such a gallery/section/area? Section of Shankly Gates? Something off a ferry-boat (bell)?
Happy Christmas to all and sundry.
Gerry

The coat of arms: 'Argent (silver) a Cormorant in the beak a branch of sea-weed called Laver all proper'. It includes Neptune with trident and a Triton blowing his shell. The banners include the Arms of Liverpool and a ship under sail.

It's a municipal signpost, so, yes, it's a LB. I liked the 80s/90s vintage signposts, those with a Liver Bird on top. However, the new, more modern-looking signposts in town are rather smart as well.
MissInformed 01-02-2007, 02:56 PM interesting stuff indeed!:)

marky 01-03-2007, 01:35 AM Liverbird (city facing) with ladders. I noticed these ladders around late 2003/until early 2004. I presume for some sort of checking/repair work. A pic appeared in the Echo aswell. On the sea-facing Liverbird I could just about make out 'Billy 1995" had been painted on its' back.

I suppose you know that Higson's used the Liver Bird on their signs.
I didn't know that Higson's were still in business, but then, what do I know about Liverpool's Breweries? :PDT_Aliboronz_24:
Never heard of Higsons. Mostly heard of Cains which is on the Edinburgh Pub Sign I took as well.

taffy 01-22-2007, 09:05 AM One of the more fascinating relics to be found in Mossley Hill are the old tramway overhead cable support columns. These are to be found on Queen's Drive near its intersection with the main railway line into Lime St. As with many Liverpool Corporation installations, these were adorned with the mythical Liver bird. the attached photo shows one in cast iron at the base of one of the surviving columns near St Anthony of Padua Roman catholic Church.

Why didn't I notice they had Liver-birds on em? Tell you what, your the first one! The Liverpool streetlighting community (comprising of 5 approx) talk endlessly about how the vintage streetlighting is so great and not one of them (including me) haven't noticed the liver birds on the bollard.
I think I should have gone to Specsavers!

ChrisGeorge 02-06-2007, 08:18 PM Hi Kev
Nice Liver Bird pics. Where were they taken, if I might ask, Kev?
Chris
The top one was found just off Church Street, one of those roads that runs through to the other side.
The last one was found in the new Radio Merseyside!
ScouseLad 02-06-2007, 10:42 PM Took these today - don't know how many times I've walked past this and not noticed it - that was until I did see it yesterday!
Its on the corner of Fenwick Street and Moor Street (I think). Obviously its for the Liverpool Union Bank Limited - I know there's a Liver Bird in the centre of the design but are they Liver Birds on the upper freeze?
What do you reckon?
ScouseLad 02-06-2007, 10:46 PM Ah.... I thought I had posted the previous post so that the pictures were embeded in the mail. How do I get them to embed rather than post as attachments?
Greatful for any help...

Kev, the bottom picture - do you know of any other 'monuments' that are just like that? I'm going through a series of old photo's for a friend and I have come up with one in Liverpool which is 99% the same but not in that location!
There's another one at the other entrance to the park. Much taller though and without the coat of arms.
Although I assume that many of the older parks have similar structures at their entrance, can someone confirm or deny?

I can confirm that the marble pillars used in those two entrances came from the inside of St George's Hall.
They were taken out when the organ was installed, and if you look round the interior of the Great Hall, you'll see all the other pillars.

robbo176 02-24-2007, 08:14 PM Hi Phillip
yes it is Everton Library ,it's looking in a very bad shape as most of the roof tiles are on the pavement & there is a strange buzzing noise coming from inside, there was work going on inside before Christmas but that has stopped.

And for the benefit of the forum care to explain why I might have liked the above two pictures?
Squirrel 02-27-2007, 11:06 AM As well you know, Dave, the bundle of sticks being held together by the two birds is called a fasces. It was historically a symbol of Roman power and authority as well as being later popular with another gang of Rome-based authoritarians, in fact lending their political movement its name.

I took this photo for one of our challenges on the Yo Liverpool forum to take a picture of a bottle but I may as well post it in this thread as well due to the Liver Birds in the shot. The stoneware ginger beer bottle at left is offset with two cards from Liverpool, one showing the Roman Catholic Cathedral, the other a Christmas card with Liver Bird, a Higson's beer mat with Liver Bird, an old pound note, a wooden box with my Grandad's medals from the First World War and his cap badge from the Lancashire Fusiliers, and an old clay pipe bowl I found in my grandparents' Mossley Hill garden.

They were not awarded, they were part of everyday uniform (Tram/bus conductors, catertakers, in fact most people who worked for the the corpy had them. They were worn in the peaked caps.

They have sent me a copy of a book (which you may all be aware of) called 'The Little Book of Liver Birds' - and shows over 100 places (including photo's and maps) of where they are around liverpool!!
Found some which aren't on this list so far so gonna get me camera out and appear that I know loads of em :PDT_Aliboronz_24:
isbn number for the book is 1-85983-547-3 £9.99 written by David Cottrell.

Spotted on the entrance gates off Grant Avenue. Technically these gates are in Toxteth Park !!
Technically that only applied to when Toxteth was only a park surely? Aren't the books you read as credible as the people the council employ to keep records of there boundary maps?
It's only barley. on the edge of the boundary of the Toxteth.net map anyway so maybe It can be argued It's not In Toxteth.
It says half my street was Toxteth park too but not the half where I live.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:

Phredd
Hi Phredd
They look a bit more like swords to me than cricket bats. The red rose would imply Lancashire and the wheatsheaf could be Cheshire or else the Cooperative Wholesale Society (CWS). The badge is certainly intriguing. It might have something to do with the Historical Society of Lancashire and Cheshire whose logo combined the red rose and the wheatsheaf for the two counties and the Liver Bird could be for the Liverpool chapter of the society.
Chris
phredd 05-03-2007, 03:30 PM Thanks Chris.
If you look closer at the centre, either side of the 'C' you can see what appears to be 2 balls. That is what made me think of cricket (or maybe Baseball, but I doubt it)

Seperating the two is a sovereign of Queen Victoria.
Just next door at No.1 Water Street is another Liver bird, standing almost upright with a very human stance. He's in gold and this used to be the offices of the Liverpool Building Society. I'll try and post a photo if I can work out how to!

Another suggestion that occurs to me is that maybe you could shoot it yourself off the side of the bus that was on display for the Lord Mayor's Parade (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showpost.php?p=61485&postcount=10) at St. George's Hall and have it blown up to the size you want.

Anyway, enjoy - more to follow

Hello customhouse
This isn't the first time you have asked about this. In fact, I gave you some advice (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showpost.php?p=61513&postcount=207) about it a week ago. I am sorry to hear you still have not found what you need. Perhaps someone else can help you. Good luck, John.

Hi Taffy
Do you know if those birds are definitely supposed to be Liver Birds? They look more like cranes to me. Compare this image of sculpted cranes (http://www.aspencountry.com/aspen/assets/product_images/product_lib/37000-37999/37513.jpg) with what you show in your photo.

They could be cranes but I prefer the mystical Liver Bird which has a metamorphic shape to suit all tastes. Wasn't the original Liver bird an eagle. The museum attendant thought it was a Liver bird too.
PhilipG 06-18-2007, 07:28 PM I don't thnk they're supposed to be Liver Birds simply because there's nothing in the beaks.
Thanks for the photo, because I've got a lampshade like that.
Mine is Edwardian, and made by Holophane, and was rescued from Irwins in Southport when they converted into a Tesco 'self-service' shop in 1961.

PhilipG 07-06-2007, 11:36 AM It's on a building down a side-street, on the corner with Prescot Road. It's on the left-hand side if heading back into Liverpool...I was around there recently but it was raining so I didn't take any pics. I'm not sure if it's Stanley or Old Swan at this point.

Yes, it's almost opposite Cheadle Avenue, but I don't know where the boundary is for Stanley.

This is the rather neat and classy logo for Liverpool Entente Cordiale Tours (http://www.geocities.com/liverpool08guide/index.htm) who will be taking visitors and Scousers on some neat walking tours of Liverpool in July and August. The tours are offered in English and French and, thus, naturellement, Pierre Liver Bird's Gallic beret, oui, oui? Is that some of zee frog's legs I see in Pierre's mouth!!!???? :PDT_Xtremez_42:
Chris
julieoapw 07-08-2007, 06:52 PM Yep, I am the proud owner of my very own liver bird. Having some leaflets and business cards printed and was persuaded also to fork out for a logo which I now own and can use on all my promotional stuff. Glad you like it - makes it worth splashing out.
Afraid just plain old lava in his mouth but frogs legs would have been a good idea. Although might have been boycotted by vegetarians!

Yes I'm sure it would !!! The original will stay at the Conservation Centre I believe. Same I also think for the statue of Eros taken from Sefton Park.
marky 10-20-2007, 11:50 PM There are 4 birds visible at the junction of Ullet Road/Aigburth Drive. Two on the shields of the gold soldiers on the Lodge (which has recently been refurbished, and I think extended aswell). There are two birds on the Sefton Park entrance gate but one has had its' neck broken.

ChrisGeorge 10-21-2007, 02:13 AM Hi Folks
Wonderful photographs and information here, everybody! :handclap:
Taffy and Kev, in regard to the statue with Liver Bird on the top of the Walker Art Gallery the eroded original of which you, Taff, showed is now in the Liverpool Conservation Centre, there is a similar situation here in Baltimore in regard to the Battle Monument built 1815-1822, commemorating the British attack of 1814 and the American dead in the battle. I was part of an effort to restore the monument but the eroded original is still there. I was told though by one of the conservators that the original should be in a museum and that it is time to put up a replica. Below is a nineteenth century view of the monument. A recent view (http://www.ce.jhu.edu/baltimorestructures/Battle%20Monument/IMG%20038.jpg) shows some of the damage (beaks of griffons missing, cracks etc.)
All the best
Chris
