THE embodiment of Socialist Liverpool, Bessie Braddock, J.P., M.P., loved and (sometimes) hated, became a legend in her own lifetime and one of the city's most fascinating characters.

Nicknamed Battling Bessie, Elizabeth Margaret Braddock, once a Communist, mixed with royalty, Cabinet ministers and top personalities and celebrities.

But she never forgot her humble roots and was adored by the city's poor, needy and unemployed.

Bessie Braddock, in the hall of fame for saying to Winston Churchill:
Sir, you are drunk
Churchill replied Madam, you are ugly. In the morning, I shall be sober.

Nancy Astor said to Winston Churchill Sir, if you were my husband, I would give you poison.
Churchill replied If I were your husband I would take it.

I shall try to listen in, I expect the Braddocks high rise blocks on Netherfield Road named in their honour will get a mention.

She also had Herbert Balmer weighed up long before anyone else , in her capacity as memeber of the Watch Committee. She knew he was a fraud.
