TODAY we reveal the design of Liverpool's 800th birthday commemorative coin which will be presented to 70,000 city school-children.

http://images.icnetwork.co.uk/upl/icliverpool/dec2006/2/9/9FE834AD-AAAF-6EE8-841EB0A1EE45A1D7.jpg

The design is by sculptor Stephen Broadbent, who has created an intricate 800-year timeline.

It starts with the liverbird, representative of King John's charter, and ends with a growing plant - symbolising renewal and hope for the future.

The line includes the ancient coastline and the original "pool" inlet, Liverpool castle, and a sailing ship connected to a shackled hand representing the city's involvement in the transatlantic slave trade. continues (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/liverpoolecho/news/echonews/tm_headline=2007-coin-will-tell-800%2Dyear-city-story%26method=full%26objectid=18292176%26siteid=5 0061-name_page.html)....

I see the word "coin" is mentioned about half-a-dozen times, but is it a coin as in legal tender?
Right at the end the word "medallion" is mentioned once, which is what I think this is.

Unless Liverpool has started to issue it's own currency again? :)

Hi Philip

It sounds more like a commemorative medal doesn't it?

The line includes the ancient coastline and the original "pool" inlet, Liverpool castle, and a sailing ship connected to a shackled hand representing the city's involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.

It continues with the Liverpool skyline during the Blitz, the shape of a guitar reflecting the 60s cultural revival, and a Ford Anglia, symbolic of important post-war car manufacturing when the Liverpool as a sea port declined."

I'm sorry but it looks like a hodge podge to me and I bet a number of people are going to not make anything much of it. Liverpudlian goulash!!! :PDT_Xtremez_12:

Personally I really couldn't care less, and I can't see the design inspiring loads of people to rush out and get one.

It's a hideous design! Apart from the Liver Bird and the waterfront the symbolism is far too 'busy' to be immediately discernable, which rather defeats the object imo.

I like the case --

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/217/473635967_f76356c846.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ijob/473635967/)

I like this side of the coin which like the case shows the Liver Bird elegantly and cleverly combined with "800" and the years "1207-2007" which is nicely done --

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/167/473637823_8f2e03163e.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ijob/473637823/)

But I still find the other side to be much too busy, a bit of a hodgepodge design that I am not too happy about --

Hi Kev

What's under the Liver Bird on the one side of the coin above "1207-2007" is it a "TA" or "TH" -- what does it stand for, do you know?

Chris

The other side with the new design on is very busy yes, I don't know what the initials are for, will have to look more closely.

I still don't understand why they are calling it a coin.
It isn't legal tender.
It has no monetary value.

When commemorative Crowns are minted, they can be spent.
Admittedly, you wouldn't want to, because you could only get goods to the value of 25p.

Liverpool coining it in for year of culture

http://www.londonmintoffice.org.uk/liverpool/Royal-Liver-image.jpg (http://www.londonmintoffice.org.uk/liverpool/Royal-Liver-image.jpg)

Oct 26 2007 by Alex Bell, Liverpool Daily Post

A COMMEMORATIVE coin and a series of 20 collectors’ coins are being released in celebration of Liverpool’s 800th anniversary and Capital of Culture year.

Issued by the London Mint Office, the coins mark the city’s magnificent architecture, illustrious musicians, world famous football clubs and pivotal landmarks.

A single 800th anniversary coin, which features a series of overlapping motifs on one side with two Liver Birds displayed on the reverse, will be released on Monday.

It is designed to capture Liverpool’s origins and includes lettering from the original charter of King John in 1207.

The London Mint Office managing director Simon Mellinger said: “The commemoratives are designed to be collectable pieces reflecting on the many great things about Liverpool.

“Hopefully people who collect them can pass them down to their children and grandchildren so they can appreciate the city in years to come.”

Liverpool’s most distinctive landmark, the Royal Liver Building, will be the first commemorative released with 10,000 copies to be minted as part of a sterling silver collection.

One coin each month will then be released which will feature spectacular landmarks such as St George’s Hall, and the Mersey ferries.

The coins, which are not legal tender and are strictly memorabilia, will be available for £5 each on a first-come first-served basis as of next month.

Details are available on www.londonmintoffice.org.uk/liverpool

Customers who collect the whole series of commemoratives will be sent a 500-page book free, entitled Liverpool 800, which has been endorsed by the University of Liverpool.

Earlier this year, the Royal Mint refused to produce a £2 coin for circulation in the Capital of Culture year. A commemorative coin has since been produced by artist Stephen Broadbent and distributed to every Liverpool school pupil in advance of the 800th anniversary celebrations.

Kev, hope you enjoy "Liverpool 800"
I would like to know if anyone has actually read it. I found it very dry and it seems to have been put together by a 1980s left wing committee. Misses out more than it puts in. Great swathes of Liverpool history are over looked just to be Politically correct. No wonder it is now being given away. Let me know what you think.

I've filled in the extra ones I seem to have, I have all the others you have listed plus a gold-plated silver 800 coin (aswell as the plain silver one)

Looks like there will be 20 coins, or 22 if you include the two 800 coins, but a box for only 12, very strange....

Hope this helps

Okay I now have all of the coins in the series talent, reformers, architecture, sport and mersey.

There are two spaces left, I take it they are for the standard 800 coin and the gold one, the collection looks a bit naff as the standard 800 has no protective cover, plus the gold one comes in it's own box.

Does anyone know of any other coins in the series?

Cheers Graham
