PARENTS claim their children were served halal meat in dinners at a Church of England school without their knowledge.

The controversial food, where animals are bled to death, has been the only meat option on the menu in four local schools.

But parents only learnt it had been served for up to 17 years after pupils took a letter home.

A parent said: "I've nothing against halal meat - especially for religion - but my daughter is Christian."

Reading council admitted it was the only option at four schools but sent letters after realising some parents did not know.

One is thought to be St John's C of E primary.

A spokesman added: "We are increasing options by offering fish each day."

Muslims only eat halal meat under Islamic law. Critics say it is cruel as the animals are not stunned.

Why don't the Muslims just kill them quick instantly, instead of leaving them to bleed to death?

I'd prefer to just kill them instantly.

Yeah, chickens are not usually given enough room.

Think there are European laws that say you can't kill the animal if it's distressed or something mentally anyway.

Its a myth Max that our slaughter methods are humane, non-painful or not distressing for an animal. And not all animals are actually stunnedor even unconscious... Many animals are slaughtered while fully aware.

When we slaughter them, we also bleed the carcass.

Yeah I know, I saw a video of a pig knowing it was going to die and tried to escape, but some crazy American's working in the slaughterhouse went all ye hawww and got a chainsaw and instantly took it's head off and it was still twitching!

Think one of my dads mates worked in a slaughterhouse and they used that electric one that instantly kills them though.

I'd hate to see the statistics from a study of the effectiveness of our bolt guns and electric stunning machinary :eek: :eek:


We are not that 'humane' compared to Halal are we Maxie lad :(

I went to see some guy who worked in the Ab. on Prescot rd. once. Those 'Humane' killers they used then were less than useless. It was a gun that fired a spike, which was part of the gun and pulled out the the cows head when it went down. Only about 5 or 6 ins. long and fired by a 22 cartridge. It had no stopping power, and rarely was the beast dead when tipped out of the tube.

Didn't really feel anything from watching it. It was on a mobile phone clip downloaded from some site called Ogrish, It felt like watching a movie.

I would had to been to be feel anything although I thought it was cruel the way they acted.
