Chat show host Paul O’Grady was recently given an honorary fellowship by Liverpool John Moores University. O’Grady, who became a household name as brassy blonde Lily Savage, was born and raised in nearby Birkenhead. The 50-year-old was honoured to recognise his achievements in the field of entertainment.

Asked if he had any advice for the graduates, O’Grady joked:

Don’t nick anything you can’t sell on, don’t mix cider and Pernod, and remember that God will always protect you, but carry a brick in your handbag just to be sure.

I'm sure we all wish Paul O'grady well.......

TV host and Lily Savage creator Paul O'Grady has been taken to hospital with chest pains, a friend has said.

The presenter of The New Paul O'Grady Show was admitted to hospital on Friday morning. His friend said: "It does appear he has had a heart attack."

The 51-year-old comedian suffered a heart attack in April 2002 and underwent an operation to widen a blocked artery.

A Channel Four spokeswoman said: "We are shocked and concerned by the news."

She added: "Along with Paul's many fans we are wishing him all the very best."

A spokeswoman for the William Harvey Hospital in Kent declined to comment.

After his heart attack in 2002, O'Grady said he was reviewing his lifestyle and giving up smoking.

Pete Price said he was alright last night when he was doing the soaps on the phone in.

He was funny on Blankety Blank though, as was Les Dawson!

Paul O' Grady

Last year I was playing my guitar and singing in a place called Kelly O'Neils which is off Kewars, Honolulu, Hawaii.

They asked me to fill in a form, so I could be paid.

The first name that came into my head was Paul O'Grady.

Jeeze,,,,, my gob dropped when the compere introduced me as :-

*Poor Old lady*

I got paid but never went back.
