i used to love Bread when I was a kid...
I know it doesnt really stand up today, but i like the show :)
I hated Bread, it just seemed to reinforce every stereotype when Liverpool really didnt need kicking down any more. Favourite films are My Kingdom and Going Off Big Time, not sure if I have a favourite TV wise but was a bit disappointed they didnt make any more of Nice Guy Eddie.

Christy - I have to totally agree with you regarding your choices.
Mine are:
One Summer
The Muscle Market
Needles
Boys From The Blackstuff
Our Day Out
The fantastic Pete Postlethwaite is my all-time favourite actor. He was excellent in Alan Bleasedale's The Muscle Market and Jimmy McGovern's Needles (AKA Needle).
Although he comes from Warrington he spent a lot of time on the Liverpool stage.
SteH
Yeah, I thought Nice Guy Eddie was great. I was disappointed that they never made a second series of it.

Mark R,
I agree Pete Postlethwaite is brilliant, another great performance of his was 'In the name of the father',
I made a copy of 'Muscle market' and sent it to my son in Tennessee, he was born in Liverpool but we left when he was 2. He called me to tell me how much he enjoyed it and wanted any similar films I've got.:handclap:

Weren't parts of the Parole Officer (Steve Coogan - never took to Alan Partridge but brilliant in this) filmed in Liverpool? It was on TV a few weeks ago and bits of it looked familiar.

It is included on the DVD set. I remember seeing it (I think it was as Play For Today) in 1978. They are in Middlesborough. Have watched it several times since as well. The cast is excellent (as in the series). Yosser has to be my favourite character though. Bernard Hill is excellent.

I think I remember Steve Coogan standing on top of a building in Castle Street (don't know if was in the Parole Officer though...)
Some of In The Name of The Father was filmed in Liverpool as well. Gerry Conlon (Daniel Day Lewis) dosses on a bench in Abercromby Square in the film and St George's Hall was used for the trial scenes. Near the end of the film Gerry stands in front of the supposed court (in actual fact it is Liverpool Museum!)
I think I remember Steve Coogan standing on top of a building in Castle Street (don't know if was in the Parole Officer though...)
Ah yes ... just Googled it, the "West Clyde Bank" they broke into in the film was on Castle Street - they did go onto its roof too. I thought one scene was in the Victoria Building (in the university) too, but can't find any mention of it.

I took this photo in 1992.
Does anybody know what film or TV production these ficticious signs were done for?
Note the arrow for the "Ferry" is pointing in the wrong direction.

My Kingdom
Also filmed in Wirral! Was glad to see after all the heartache that man suffered, he found solace in Rock Ferry/Lower Tranmere. :handclap: Whats amazing is looking at the Liverpool Skyline from 2001 and comparing it to now. The transformation is amazing!
I like the 51st State too; although I dont know if the city is shown off to its finer side in this or the other film tbh.
Bread as always has to feature!
I enjoy watching 51st State too, I have to smile when I see the car chase scenes, they go "round a corner" and suddenly they're at the opposite end of the city :unibrow:

Having a stab here, but could it be from The Leaving of Liverpool?
Another drama that was excellent was My Beautiful Son starring Julie Walters & Paul Reiser and set in Liverpool.

I've ordered a few of their titles. They are very good.

I hated Bread too...Wasn't too keen on "Boys from the blackstuff" either.
I've always believed that the reasons Liverpool has got it's scally reputation is because of:
Carla Lane "Bread"
Alan Bleasedale "Boys from the Blackstuff"
Derek Hatton "Derek Hatton"
and a bit of Harry Enfield...
What does everybody else think?

I was in it ! :D (oops - giving my age away ! ... I was very young - a teenager) :)
The club scenes were filmed in the Broadway club - we were extras - part of the club crowd. We had to go down there to the Broadway club all dolled up as if we were going for a night on the town - it was early in the morning but we had to act like we were drinking, having a great time and laughing at the comedian .. you know - all that false laughing, ha,ha :D
It went on for a few days, can't recall how long, but they did a lot of retakes. I remember us all queuing for the food provided, and I remember very clearly Billie Whitelaw, Albert Finney and Michael Medwin who I think was directing it.

I think it was The State in Dale St.......I was going to be an extra for that scene but my dad wouldn't let me stay off school :(

It was definitely the State - I was working there at the time, but didn't appear in the film.
I've been looking for Our Day Out for years, put up a couple of requests on UKNova but didn't get a bite, then the other day it popped into my head again for some reason, did a search and found the torrent. Still funny and touching after 30 years, great writing and excellent performances. But the main reason I wanted to see it was nostalgia for Tiber Street school - I was there 71-77. I remember it was filmed during the summer holidays, some of the locals got a bit sniffy because the crew had scruffied it up a bit more than it was already - extra graffiti and so on. Seeing those streets again made me realise how old I'm getting, everything has changed so much - even the scouse accent is different these days.

Yes, it is where the Bridewell Building is on the corner of Prescot Street and Low Hill (opposite the former Coach & Horses pub).
Roger Phillips is in the final episode. He plays 'Mitch.' He's also in another Liverpool programme: The Muscle Market (also written by Bleasedale).

Hi Disco, we were very close to you. Used to live at the house by the alley facing the shops on the Drive, but due to Alt Valley & councils inability to help in anything but collect rent we were forced out by scum....
It was filmed just before I arrived, but Mrs Corky remembers it being filmed. Moaned about them closing Ferguson off when she was trying to cut through to get to work!!
I got it via Thailand, as an official (!) but its certainly a professional job, not a bootleg. I think thats the only place it was ever officially released, strangely!
Love the Jibe about the us being painted in Everton colours too! :D
I can certainly sort a copy out. :unibrow:
I also recently got a TV rip of Muscle Market too. I am told it was originally intended to be a part of the Boys from the Blackstuff series, but shelved and was shown as part of the Play for Today saga...
