City in running for MTV Awards Dec 13 2006
EXCLUSIVE by Sam Lister, Liverpool Daily Post
THE most glamorous and successful names in pop and rock are set to descend on the city for the MTV Europe Music Awards.
Liverpool is bidding to host the ceremony during Capital of Culture year and is at a crucial stage of negotiations.
It has made it on to the shortlist and is now vying with other major European cities for the November, 2008, event.
Securing the deal would give the city global exposure with more than 14m viewers expected to tune in.
An economic study by independent consultants reported £8.9m worth of direct economic benefit for Scotland when Edinburgh hosted the awards three years ago. Hotel bookings alone were valued at £2.2m.
Last night, leading figures in the city’s music industry said it would be a major coup for the city.
Singer Thomas Lang, who runs the 3345 bar, said: “This would be fantastic for Liverpool.
“It would be recognition of the city’s musical past and its future. And it would show that there is more to us than just The Beatles.”
Oxygen Music’s Pete Byrne, managing director of Parr Street studios, said: “This will be a fantastic chance for the biggest names in music to find out what Liverpool has to offer.
“Music is at the heart of our city and the number of singers and bands to come out of it shows that, so there would be no better place for MTV to hold its awards.”
The awards were started in 1994 by MTV Europe as an alternative to the channel’s American awards.
That's really good news if it happens.

It's probably a big If though, this would be an amazing coup for the city in 2008 but it's probably early days in the decision making nothing may ever come of it,I hope i'm wrong though.
drone_pilot 10-31-2007, 12:25 PM Liverpool's new Echo Arena will host next year's MTV Europe Music
Awards ceremony, organisers have announced.
It will be the third time the annual event has been held in the UK, following
shows in London in 1996 and Edinburgh in 2003.
"Not only is it the European Capital of Culture next year but the influence of
its rich musical heritage is still felt today," producer Richard Godfrey said.

Is right - we should relish in it too - Liverpool is the detroit and the Nashville of the UK. Our wall of fame proves that - more No.1s than anywhere else.
lindylou 10-31-2007, 01:17 PM Great news, I just heard it on the radio. :)
Wonder who will host It.
I can Imagine someone like Snoop's language fitting In with the scousers In the crowd.
Paul D 10-31-2007, 03:27 PM Yeah because nobody else swears anywhere else?
This is massive news, this proved to me that Liverpool is firmly back on the map.The new arena will benefit from all the free publicity it will get and can use this to it's advantage in trying to get future events. Also Liverpool will be beamed into 1 Billion homes Worldwide because of this, over 2 Billion if you count the Grand National and the British Open golf, next year's already a success.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
It's truly remarkable and ridiculous that our city with our sporting, musical and theatre heritage has had to wait so long for an arena like this. The conference centre is also filling up with bookings which will bring more prestige to the city and will boost its economy.
We now need to start concentrating on the outlying areas and not just the arterial routes.
Its fabulous news, what great news!!!!!!
The Gardens 10-31-2007, 08:33 PM Excellent news, let's hope it is the first of many.
Im not too sure about this myself..
AngelCake 10-31-2007, 09:40 PM I don't watch MTV but if it is a big event I think it's great news.Hopefully it will be a good showcase for our city.A big arena is welcome too! Going to Manchester to see a group/comedian is ridiculous

It's a massive event and although it's not to most peoples tastes it's impact on the city will be unbelievable. It will be beamed into a Billion homes across the World and will be all over the news,if people want to ignore us next year they'll have a job trying to believe me.It mainly takes place in Capital cities just to give you an idea on how big of a deal it really is for us.The arena's not even built yet and it's attracted one of the biggest events in Europe so it just goes to show the pulling power that Liverpool has,I'm over the moon with this news.:D
Clearly good news - hotel bookings being snatched up already.

Klaatu 11-02-2007, 02:20 PM This is great news for the City...But, when the council have given a 24hr head start on their staff and families for tickets before the rest of us (Remember Maccas Kings Dock gig?)...I wonder who will actually be able to go.
Am I being too cynical here?
Paul D 11-02-2007, 04:12 PM There wont be many tickets going to the general public anyway, they've already stated that. It's still massive for the city though, they reckon you get about £33 million pounds worth of free advertising aswell as the boost to the city's profile,It'll be great for the city.
Klaatu 11-02-2007, 04:49 PM Yeah...I guess you're right.
It would be nice to go though.
stamper91 11-06-2007, 10:33 PM are the tickets on sale yet if so how much r they. ta
