City in running for MTV Awards Dec 13 2006

EXCLUSIVE by Sam Lister, Liverpool Daily Post

THE most glamorous and successful names in pop and rock are set to descend on the city for the MTV Europe Music Awards.

Liverpool is bidding to host the ceremony during Capital of Culture year and is at a crucial stage of negotiations.

It has made it on to the shortlist and is now vying with other major European cities for the November, 2008, event.

Securing the deal would give the city global exposure with more than 14m viewers expected to tune in.

An economic study by independent consultants reported £8.9m worth of direct economic benefit for Scotland when Edinburgh hosted the awards three years ago. Hotel bookings alone were valued at £2.2m.

Last night, leading figures in the city’s music industry said it would be a major coup for the city.

Singer Thomas Lang, who runs the 3345 bar, said: “This would be fantastic for Liverpool.

“It would be recognition of the city’s musical past and its future. And it would show that there is more to us than just The Beatles.”

Oxygen Music’s Pete Byrne, managing director of Parr Street studios, said: “This will be a fantastic chance for the biggest names in music to find out what Liverpool has to offer.

“Music is at the heart of our city and the number of singers and bands to come out of it shows that, so there would be no better place for MTV to hold its awards.”

The awards were started in 1994 by MTV Europe as an alternative to the channel’s American awards.

That's really good news if it happens.

That's really good news if it happens.

It's probably a big If though, this would be an amazing coup for the city in 2008 but it's probably early days in the decision making nothing may ever come of it,I hope i'm wrong though.

Liverpool's new Echo Arena will host next year's MTV Europe Music
Awards ceremony, organisers have announced.

It will be the third time the annual event has been held in the UK, following
shows in London in 1996 and Edinburgh in 2003.

"Not only is it the European Capital of Culture next year but the influence of
its rich musical heritage is still felt today," producer Richard Godfrey said.

Yeah because nobody else swears anywhere else?

This is massive news, this proved to me that Liverpool is firmly back on the map.The new arena will benefit from all the free publicity it will get and can use this to it's advantage in trying to get future events. Also Liverpool will be beamed into 1 Billion homes Worldwide because of this, over 2 Billion if you count the Grand National and the British Open golf, next year's already a success.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:

It's truly remarkable and ridiculous that our city with our sporting, musical and theatre heritage has had to wait so long for an arena like this. The conference centre is also filling up with bookings which will bring more prestige to the city and will boost its economy.

We now need to start concentrating on the outlying areas and not just the arterial routes.

It's a massive event and although it's not to most peoples tastes it's impact on the city will be unbelievable. It will be beamed into a Billion homes across the World and will be all over the news,if people want to ignore us next year they'll have a job trying to believe me.It mainly takes place in Capital cities just to give you an idea on how big of a deal it really is for us.The arena's not even built yet and it's attracted one of the biggest events in Europe so it just goes to show the pulling power that Liverpool has,I'm over the moon with this news.:D

This is great news for the City...But, when the council have given a 24hr head start on their staff and families for tickets before the rest of us (Remember Maccas Kings Dock gig?)...I wonder who will actually be able to go.

Am I being too cynical here?

There wont be many tickets going to the general public anyway, they've already stated that. It's still massive for the city though, they reckon you get about £33 million pounds worth of free advertising aswell as the boost to the city's profile,It'll be great for the city.

Only goes to the hotels, shops, clubs and where ever else they spend there money though.

Will the council tax the places enough for the money to benefit the public?

Yes, but the people who work in those hotels, shops, clubs etc. will spend a lot of it locally so the local economy as a whole benefits. They'll spend it on food, clothes, entertainment etc. so the people who work in those areas will then gain, second hand, from the money initially spent by visitors to the event. This goes on endlessly, the initial spend resulting in a trickle down effect to most in the locality. It's standard economic theory called the multiplier effect - and one of the key reasons tourism is desired by destination. It's not all positive, as there will be leakages (some of the income from the event will be spent outside the city), but, on balance, the local economy has gained significantly.

Hear hear and the overiding question at the end of the day is: 'Would we rather have it than not have it' and the answer has to be a resounding 'Yes' because you can never know the extra potential spin offs too like people coming back here or other organisations seeing how well it went and wanting a piece of the action or even the rich and famous investing in a waterfront apartment etc etc....

Whats also important is changing the perceptions of general members of the public. This year everyone up and down the country, europe and world wide have been bamboozled with us in the spotlight for world class events.

Other Uk cities can only dream of this much positive publicity compacted into one year!

================================================== ===

With a bit of controversy, some blasts from the past and a whole lot of glamour, the MTV Europe Music Awards arrive in Liverpool tonight.

Stars such as Beyonce Knowles, Duffy, Sir Paul McCartney and Kanye West are attending the event - with all up for gongs.

Welsh singer Duffy leads the award nominations with Britney Spears and Coldplay.

Each have been shortlisted in three categories, including the Album of the Year - with the likes of Leona Lewis and Alicia Keys the competition.

Brit boy band Take That will also return to the MTV stage to perform their new single Greatest Day live for the first time.

The band performed at the first EMAs in Berlin 15 years ago, winning the prize for Best Group.

Back in his home town, Sir Paul will collect the Ultimate Legend accolade.

Bill Roedy, chairman and CEO of MTV Networks International, said: "Not only has he been one of the most formative influences on the music scene on a global scale but he is one of the founding fathers that have earned Liverpool the recent accolade of Most Musical City in the UK.

Host Katy Perry faced calls for her to be axed from the awards when a publicity shot of her brandishing a 3in flick-knife emerged.

The families of knife crime victims slammed the I Kissed A Girl singer's behaviour as "unacceptable".

The call seemingly went unheard, as the American will not only present the show, but perform her hit single and possibly take home a award for the Most Addictive Track.

Well, some time ago I wrote that Kof as Liverpool's best urban artist should perform at the MTV Awards - well he has been chosen with some other musicians to represent Liverpool. This is great news and well deserved. Hopefully this will lead to him getting the wider recognition that he seserves. Check out the World Museum `the beat goes on' where Kof is inlcuded along with the Beatles etc. for his contribution to the music leaders of merseyside.
Among those attending on Thursday are Soft Toy Emergency, singer Laura Critchley, Kof, a leader of Liverpool?s urban music scene,
Check out his website for more info on this amazing performer.
Kof alongside his cousin Yaw Owusu have been doing some amazing work this summer with youngsters and their Performance `Legacy' was recently showcased at the museum. The also won the Black History Month award for best business improving the community.
What do you think should this young man be given the recognition he deserves.

Do you know what, i'm on a couple of Yank orientated Beatles forums and you wouldn't believe it that a few people still actually believe that. It was fun looking for all the clues and there's literally dozens, some planted by the Beatles themselves, some incidental and some plain crazy which are nothing to do with it but is straw grasping. There's even fans who've done superimposed pics that flick on and off over each other to show the change in eyeline, nose shape etc etc - people with too much time on their hands if you ask me :)
