View Full Version : Coleman's Depository, Northumberland Street & Park Road
lindylou 12-10-2006, 11:40 AM Telling a friend about all the great pics of buildings on here, and she said there's an interesting old building at the corner (or in) Dorrit st, Park rd.
It's by some waste ground. She says the building is called Colemans Depository.
Do any of our members from that area know it? Is it worth photographing ?
ChrisGeorge 12-10-2006, 11:54 AM Hello Lindy
This building is on Toxteth.net at
http://www.toxteth.net/places/liverpool/general/colemans.htm and
http://www.toxteth.net/places/liverpool/general/northumberland%20street%202.htm
The first page tells us, "Established in 1875, this building still stands at the junction of Park Road with Northumberland Street. . . 2006 : The top two floors of windows have recently been removed, thereby leaving the building exposed to the elements."
Can someone get an updated photograph. Thanks in advance!
Chris

Lindy.
If you're interested in a building, take a photo.
Coleman's may not be beautiful, but it is unique.
For the record, it isn't Listed.
lindylou 12-10-2006, 03:20 PM Thanks Chris and Philip. I will certainly show those pages from Toxteth.net to my friend.
I don't get over that way too often but if I ever get across that way I'll take a look. :)
marky 12-10-2006, 04:54 PM Here's a pic from June 2006...minus some windows. The windows are still out.
lindylou 12-10-2006, 05:01 PM Thanks Marky. :)
MissInformed 12-10-2006, 05:55 PM i love this building.
having grown up around the area, it is such a familiar landmark, although I don't think it has been in use in my lifetime!:)

The bottom right hand shop was a base/recruiting place for the Civil Defence at one time. It was in use until recently and may still be used in parts.
I like the Telephone number.
MissInformed 12-11-2006, 01:44 PM i like the telephone number on the side too!
i wonder who owns it.
It is a marvel that it has been overlooked in the realms of property developers, etc. Although I am glad!!!

During the riots in 1981 this fireproof depository was set on fire.
PhilipG 12-11-2006, 02:55 PM I've lived in the Dingle since 1991, and pass this building most days, but I've never seen any signs of it being used.
The telephone number is a mystery.
699 Park.
There never was a Telephone Exchange called Park.
There was Sefton Park, Lark Lane and Royal which Coleman's would have had access to.
The only conclusion I've come to is that the lettering dates from 1900 when telephones were still quite rare, and somebody made a mistake.
Besides, the letters usually came before the numbers.
In the 1930s the number for Coleman's was Royal 535.
marky 12-11-2006, 03:18 PM I've seen it open a couple of times, 2 or 3 years ago...probably when installing those mobile 'phone masts.

I meant open as a permanent place of business.
A light was fixed on the top of the building and is on all day.
And of course the upper two levels of windows were taken out.
If it had been Listed, that wouldn't have been allowed!
MissInformed 12-11-2006, 05:04 PM all good info guys.
Interesting point about the phone number Philip...
MaddieDigital 12-30-2006, 02:44 PM Agree with all - great building and a wonderful bit of liverpool heritage - couple of photos (see links beklow) taken hopefully before some development company demolishes it!
