View Full Version : Your fav place in Liverpool?
theninesisters 12-06-2006, 12:26 PM We've all got a fav place in Liverpool, perhaps it's somewhere you go to chill out or to sit off in the car - where are yours?
I've got two. When it's one of those days, I walk up to what is known locally as the 3 hills in Childwall (at the back of Mersey TV) and crash out in what used to be my den when I was about 10 years old. Now just a massive section of overgrown trees/bushes and no one comes past you - or would ever see you if they did! You can spend hours there with no noise as you are away from all the roads and can lie down and watch the sky go past.
My other is venturing down to the Airport at the end of the runway where everyone goes to watch aircraft take off, carry on down the road as if you're heading towards the control tower and on the left there is space for a car. You park up at night listening to a soundtrack in your car, you have the wirral in front of you with the reflection of the Mersey and aircraft landing to the side of you. Magic!
A nice thread mate, cheers for starting it - anywhere near otterspool prom, walking along the prom with the wind and the mersey by your side, their ain't nowt better.
Talking of dens and such things, I find myself more often catching site of old play areas and sit off points and in my mind the memories are so vivid of when I was 10.

Hello Jona76
My Mersey fave place is similar in that I have nice memories of walking down to Hale lighthouse and cycling to Oglet close to where you are talking about at the present Airport. I am talking about back in the Sixties. My favorite place of all is Hilbre Island which I have written about in a number of poems (see poems on my website). Hilbre is where I think about when I want to be restful and think of somewhere where I could be peaceful.

Violet 12-06-2006, 09:41 PM I think the best place to ever be in Liverpool, is 2am on a winter morning wandering the streets of Kensington - there's a particularly beautiful place called 'Kebab Burger Chicken'.
Brenda 12-06-2006, 10:13 PM My favourite place has to be Burbo Bank, I can sit there all day playing a tape and just watching the ships come and go, to see lightening from a thunder storm on the Wirral and it isnt even raining this side, to see the wind turbines way out to sea. It really does de-stress me.:PDT_Piratz_26:
Anywhere down by the River Mersey, being blown by the wind and that Mersey smell.
Down by West Kirkby Marina/ Hilbre Island.
Anywhere by water, on water, in water :)
Shapers 12-06-2006, 10:30 PM City Centre on a saturday night is good. When theres no trouble of course.
Everton Brows view is nice. Just not particuarly the area itself.
Calderstones Park is a lovely place to stroll. The Alber Dock is also a nice palce to go for a walk.

I disagree there, the Caspian is the best fast food joint in Kensington!
Views from Everton Brow are stunning.
Sefton Park and the Anglican Cathedral Grounds are great places to be for peace and tranquility, while any traditional Victorian puib is a good place to unwind and savour some local character.

They look quite advanced transit sheds for the time - pilarless inside. Are they the sheds on the river wall?

Spot on John. The river is just to the left of the pic.
snappel 12-07-2006, 09:49 AM For me it would be up on a rooftop, somewhere high where I won't get irritated by anyone, nice weather, a few beers, friends and some food. Just like this in fact...

lindylou 12-07-2006, 12:33 PM Most of us agree about a walk by the river.
You can't beat it. Like John, I love the smell and the atmosphere of being alongside the Mersey. It is one thing that I would miss terribly if I didn't live here. I love to hear the gulls.
That's why I have a seagull for my avatar. :celb (23):
MissInformed 12-07-2006, 05:10 PM I think my favourite place is the Albert Dock, all along the Pier Head to the Port of Liverpool Building...
A place that never loses it magic for me..:)
Norm NZ 12-07-2006, 11:14 PM At present, mine is here, reading all your comments in this topic! It 'transports' me back, not only in distance, but also in time!! Thanks to All.
sweetpatooti 12-08-2006, 09:37 AM My mam's back kitchen - always warm, cup of tea, huddle round the table and put the world to rights. A Liverpool back kitchen - you can't beat that!

I can identify totally with that! For a while (several years ago) I lived and worked in North-East Lancashire which, of course, is land-locked; I really missed being near the river/sea and felt hemmed in and claustrophobic. I used to come home every weekend and the view of the Mersey from the train as it approached Lime Street station would immediately cheer me up.
These days, I love to drive to Harrison Drive and watch the tide coming in, then drive down to Seacombe - the sight of the Liverpool waterfront from this side of the water is, indeed, a sight to behold. Absolutely fantastic!

Scanner 03-05-2007, 11:06 PM i agree sitting around the table in yer mars back kitchen, putting the world to rights and meeting ur brothers and sisters there, how i long for them days now
Unsurprisingly,it's probably the Loop line. You can forget you're in Liverpool at times. Also, the fields at the far end of Crocky park leading to Flukers brook next to the m57.
My favourites are Woolton Village, Otterspool Prom, some of Aigburth Vale due to the chippies there and the Pier Head by the Liver building. The Pier Heads a building site now though.http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/images/icons/icon9.gif
knowhowe 03-08-2007, 03:27 AM Great thread. I agree with many of these posts but would like to add:
Wandering through my childhood haunts (don't get to do it very often) around Crosby- past my infant and junior schools in Forefield Lane, up Chestnut Avenue to the Wood Wall and the wander round it to Little Crosby village and the surrounding Ince and S******y woods. On to (the now-celebrated) Crosby Beach. Further on to Hightown, Formby and Freshfield- squirrels, pinewoods and more beach. On even further to Southport- quite a pedal, once, for small legs!
In the other direction, recalling the exciting pedal along the dock road or L2 or L8 bus ride to the wonders of Liverpool, where my favourite places include the Pier Head, of course- and being on the Ferry. The Cathedrals and Anglical cemetery, Sefton and Otterspool Parks and the prom, the Philharmonic Hall, the Philharmonic pub, wandering round the docks- not what it used to be- the Museum and Walker Art Gallery, Lark Lane... on and on.
(Can anybody tell me why this ridiculous forum has censored the name of the woods above?)
Gnomie 03-08-2007, 06:26 AM St Anthonys church, Scotland road. the church is open during the day. it is so beautiful inside and you can be alone with your thoughts.
Goodison Park of course.
Rathbone road/edge lane junction. looking over the park as the sun goes down. amazing sunsets in the summer.
William Brown Street, The Pier Head, Anglican Cathedral grounds, Goodison.
gilly10 03-08-2007, 12:15 PM When I was a lot younger than now, I used to love going and sitting in my favourite place at 3 or 4am in the morning, which was down the Pierhead. You know the bridge down to the Landing Stage? Well I used to climb out onto the side of that, then underneath it where there was a small ledge. It was so peaceful there, somewhere I could escape some of the madness of the 80`s!! Loved the way the boats would creep eerily up the Mersey, lights bouncing off the water. A dull, chugging sound would disturb the calmess as it passed me by!! Quality!! Remember it like it was last night!
Yes, and Goodison Park of course!! :handclap:
StuartF 03-08-2007, 01:39 PM I love being down by the river too. Coming originally from Coventry, I was about as far away from a major waterway as you can get in England, and the whole vibe down by the river on a nice day is really nice. Whenever I have friends up from home for the weekend, I like to get up early on a sunday and go a walk down by the Albert Docks and up by the liver building, it's really good to be down there before it becomes overrun with school-kids, you get an idea of what an important, bustling part of the city it must have once been.
Being a bit of an urbanite, I also enjoy trekking around the general Dale street area, which at times gives the impression of being part of a big European capital - parts of it remind me very much of Paris. Again, best time - I think - to be down there is early morning in the weekend. The next best place as far as I'm concerned are the gardens of the John Foster Building of JMU on Mount Pleasant - I can usually be found on a hot day reading a book and listening to some tunes on the grass - shame the hot days are so few and far between I guess.
Having only been in Liverpool for a few years, I've not explored nearly as much as I'd like.
theninesisters 03-08-2007, 02:13 PM One of the special moments for me back a few years ago was to climb the tower of St Nick's on a hot sunny sunday morning - 8:30am. The 12 bells are one of the finest rings in the north west but it gets really hot up there - the only way around it is to open some of the large windows in the tower.
Ringing on the 10th bell, you stand on a box and overlook the window - and indeed the mersey high up and you really could imagine that there is nothing below you and that you are floating around on some invisible carpet up there. One of the finest views most people never get to experience!
verdi 03-08-2007, 02:13 PM I like the St James cemetery too, often walk through there. Used to play in there when I was a kid, and it was all overgrown. Went there the other week when it was snowy and foggy, wish I could take photos like some of fellow members. Also from a different thread the cellars of the old custom house, we used to play there. The waterfront, the parks, a cosy pub, like Kavanaghs, good beer and conversation.
bazzara 03-08-2007, 02:30 PM I miss my lovely walks with my nan 'mamma' ... from clare road in Bootle to the Strand.... I used to look forward to her taking me to Sayers.... couldn't beat that!! RIP mamma... miss you loads!! I'm not saying the Strand is my favourate place in Liverpool... it's not!! It has to be The Liver building..... love being on the Pier Head..... in fact I went on the ferry the other day.... and I loved it.... absolutely stunning..... u just cant beat our waterfront!! brings a tear to my eye!!
Well that's two Strands close to your heart then because the liver Buildings is also near 'The Strand' too.
My fav place used to be the "Tips" It was by Moorfields station behind some buildings, it was a giant water sculpture of big steel buckets the top bucket would "tip" and fill the next and so on, (you get the idea). I used to watch it for hours on a Sunday morning as a kid when it would be really quiet in town and a bit scary too. Does anyone know what it was really called and what happened to it?

That's a great picture Dave, the light makes it seem like there are a thousand colours! Where exactly is it,I can't read the dock name?
As for favourite places in Liverpool-possibly the benches at the north end of Princes Dock after all the builders have knocked off. Very peaceful and the wirral is all lit up. :)
Dave.
Has to be as a little kid in my nan's 7th floor flat in Everton every saturday with a view over the city and about 60 cousins packed inside playing hide and seek a wardrobe full of ironed clothes and getting shouted at! Then getting told ghost stories by the older ones, playing chinese whispers and waiting for Tony the video man to come round so we could rent a film for a week. These days I can really appreciate the docks, and streets which remind us of Liverpool being #1 port city in the world like water street looking down hill towards the river and seeing all the amazing buildings.

Decided to google Ellison tower after that post and found that exact view!
