Bloody Nora!

THE Royal Variety Performance is coming to Liverpool for the city's 800th birthday celebrations.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will come to the Empire Theatre as the show makes a rare trip away from London's West End.

The performance scheduled for next November or December comes just before the start of 2008, Liverpool's Capital of Culture year.

Organisers say it is too early to name the performers, butprevious scouse headliners include the Beatles and Cilla Black.

Laurie Mansfield, president of the Entertainment Artists Benevolent Fund, the organisation behind the show, said: "It is fantastic news and we are really looking forward to it.

"The Queen responded very quickly to the invitation and it is obvious she is very keen to come to Liverpool.

"She will attend the event with the Duke of Edinburgh on what will be the 800th anniversary of the Royal charter.

"It is also close to the end of the year, and the following year Liverpool will celebrate being European Capital of Culture.

"We don't normally mention so early where next year's venue will be. We have secured a number of dates for the end of next year, in cluding December 6, although the actual date has yet to be confirmed."

The Queen is patron of the benevolent fund.

Council leader Warren Bradley said: "This is brilliant news. It shows we are back on the world stage and that people want to do things in Liverpool.

"The calibre of those who will be in the city is phenomenal. It means we can sell Liverpool even moreand show them what a great city we have."

The first Royal Show was held in 1912 at the Palace Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue, London.

King George V and Queen Mary pledged to attend a once-yearly variety show as long as the profits went to the Variety Artistes Benevolent Fund as the EABF was then known.

The 2007 show will be the 79th Royal Variety Performance - for 16 years it was not presented owing to world conflict and Royal Family mourning.

MANY Liverpool artists and bands have featured in Royal Variety performances.

The Beatles appeared in 1963 when John Lennon quipped: "Those in the cheaper seats clap your hands. The rest just rattle your jewellery."

Paul McCartney was a solo artist in 1986 and Jimmy Tarbuck in 1964, 1981 and 1987.

In 2000, Cilla Black was with Lily Savage and Claire Sweeney a guest announcer.

Atomic Kitten and comedian Les Dennis have also appeared and this year's event featured the Sugababes, including Heidi Range, plus Ken Dodd.

That show will be screened next Tuesday.

Wonderful news, Jimmy! I'm excited about this development. I think though that we have already established a thread for this, so I will let Kev decide whether we need to close this thread and just go with the other one. Thanks though for your enthusiasm in posting the news. Go, Liverpool!!!!!

Regarding the Royal variety Performance coming to Liverpool.

I have already had several family members all wanting to get tickets for the performance and today I rang for more information regarding tickets/prices etc. which apparently are only available from.

'Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund'

I had a very interesting conversation with the lady there who informed me that they have had a lot of requests for tickets however.
Quote" The Liverpool echo" seems to have jumped the gun as not even the Venue has been decided yet.
We had a long conversation and I put my venue suggestion to her. !!! not that they would take any notice from a member of the general public. :)

To cut a long story short. The tickets should be available from May and if you ring her she will take your details and send you information about the tickets nearer the date.

The details are in the last paragraph on this page.
I hope this is okay with the mods as I am new and don't want to rock the boat. Thanks.

Thank you very much, Laura. This is interesting information that you have come up with that the Entertainment Artists Benevolent Fund does not appear to know of the decision that the Royal Variety Show will take place in Liverpool at the Empire, if that is indeed the case that such a decision has been made. As you say, their website does not appear to show the 2007 venue, and the report appears mainly on Liverpool and Northwest forums. It seems we need to dig some more into this!

I think they are happy it is Liverpool but which theatre hmmmm:unibrow: :unibrow:  I obviously suggested the Empire.

If you look at the Empire's web site. They do not have any shows listed after 19th October. Could they be hoping for a call. :celb (6): :celb (6):

Did anyone watch "Britain's Got Talent' last night? The winners will get a chance to appear at Liverpool's Royal Variety Show. There's a group from Liverpool who have reached the final 24, they made a brief appearance last night.

Liverpool Royal Variety Show line-up revealed
Nov 6 2007 Liverpool Echo

ROCK legends Bon Jovi and soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa will headline this year’s Royal Variety Performance in Liverpool.

ITV has announced the line-up for the event which will take place in Liverpool with the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in the audience.

Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts will take to the stage along with James Blunt and Enrique Iglesias.

And mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins and ballet dancer Darcey Bussell will also perform by royal command.

London’s West End will be represented this year by the cast of the musical Hairspray.

Co-presenter Phillip Schofield, 45, said: "There is no other show that boasts such a diverse mix of acts and this year will be no exception."

Former X Factor host Kate Thornton, 34, who will also present the show, added: "It’s a British institution that unites some of the biggest acts in the world for one night only and I am honoured to be presenting one of Britain’s biggest shows."

The decision to host the show at Liverpool’s Empire Theatre continues ITV’s recently-established tradition of staging it outside London.

Previous host cities include Cardiff, Edinburgh and Birmingham.

Mark Wells, ITV Production’s controller of entertainment, said: "It’s great to be going to Liverpool in 2007.

"Entertainment, like football, is in the city’s blood and I know the Liverpool audience will make us feel very welcome for what is still the greatest night of entertainment in the year."

The Royal Variety Performance is staged in aid of the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund (EABF), whose patron is the Queen.

The money will help to maintain Brinsworth House in Twickenham, Middlesex - the actors’ retirement and nursing home which is run by the EABF.

Laurie Mansfield, life president of the EABF and one of the West End’s leading theatre producers, said: "I am thrilled that ITV will be continuing the tradition of taking the Royal Variety Performance out of London and to major cities around the UK and I’m particularly delighted that this year it will be Liverpool.

"The show continues to feature top class international acts alongside television newcomers and is undoubtedly the highlight in the showbusiness calendar."

The show will take place in December and will be screened on ITV1 later that month.

Tickets are available from the EABF on 0208 898 8164.

That's cool, however, I thought Darcey Bussell retired from performing this year? I'd love to see her perform, shame I couldn't afford tickets!

BON Jovi, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and the cast of hit musical Hairspray will headline the Royal Variety Performance next month.

Singers James Blunt and Enrique Iglesias will also perform on the night at Liverpool’s Empire Theatre on December 3.

A sell-out audience will join the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at the annual extravaganza, now in its 79th year.

Liverpool was chosen to host the event because of its Capital of Culture status and 800th birthday celebrations.

Audience members, many of whom have paid £290 a head, will also see Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins, ballet dancer Darcey Bussell and Britain's Got Talent winner Paul Potts.

The cast of West End musical Hairspray, which includes Michael Ball, will perform a special extract from the show.

Phillip Schofield and Kate Thornton be the ITV presenters.

Phillip Schofield said: "There’s no other show that boasts such a diverse mix of acts.”

Kate Thornton added: “It's a British institution that unites some of the biggest acts in the world for one night only, and I’m honoured to be presenting one of Britain's biggest shows.”

The star-studded spectacular, which will be screened on ITV1 in December, is staged in aid of the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund, whose patron is the Queen.

Laurie Mansfield, life president of the EABF and one of the West End's leading theatre producers, said: “I'm thrilled ITV will be continuing the tradition of taking the Royal Variety Performance out of London and to major cities around the UK and I'm particularly delighted this year it will be Liverpool.”

“Entertainment, like football, is in the city's blood, and I know the Liverpool audience will make us feel very welcome for what is still the greatest night of entertainment in the year.”
