Page 31 of my book.
Fancy you missing it!
I'll scan it for the group.
The original belonged to a friend, no longer with us.

Chris

"St James became redundant in 1974, "

My cousin was one of the last to be married there. Friends of mine helped out painting the place.

"and was vested into the care of the Churches Conservation Trust in 1976. It may have become redundant because of plans to construct Junction 1 of the M62 motorway on the site."

Pull it down to make a motorway junction!! Those people must have had brain damage.

I donated the domain name and have waived the annual hosting fees. I just wish I could contribute more.

I have some recent internal photos if that's of any help. The Churches Conseravation Trust who own the building have carried out some major repairs. There are plans to turn it into a local mosque I believe

that would be fascinating sir!

dunno if i want it to be a mosque but it would be better than having it pulled down or left to rot as it is now

There were plans to turn it into flats in the 1980s.

The building is not being left to rot. It has been substantially repaired a, replastered, rewired, reglazed, roof fixed etc. It's sad that it had to close and then was severely vandalised by the locals. So there was extensive internal damage only part of which has been repaired. Of course if people had continued to use it as a church, there would have been no need to close the building with the conseqent need to now find other uses such as a mosque.

Does anyone have a contact for the church - when it is next open and the like? I did contact one of the bods via their e-mail address which was posted on a previous posting but no reply as such.

A crime to let this go to waste and a crime to turn it in to anything else other than its purpose.

I did hear half-a-milion Pounds was spent repairing this this church a few years ago. I wonder when all the clocks will be returned?

This building is usually on the Heritage Open Day list...Sept or Oct usually?

got a reply from Helen Swift today.
She sent a form to fill in, and said there should be an open day soon.

Will let you all know!

Yeah I got one too but I didn't get a form to fill in! :)

There are no bells in the tower but I want to have a good nose at the clock up there and see what was there at one time. As soon as there's an open day I'll be there too missy!

Cheers dear! There's actually no real 'point' to the website i.e. I'm not there to give solutions, I'm just going to be a thorn in the side of the Council while I add many more pages :celb (23):

DP's David Charters will be running a story on St James' Church regarding the baptisms of the black population of Liverpool. Not sure when the story will be run, but he'll be doing the interviewing in Robin Riley's house on the 18th. I'll be around when the interviews are carried out, so I'll ask him when I'm up there:PDT11

Dave,

Tell David Charters he also needs to look at St George's, Everton and St Mary's, Walton baptism registers. He'll find several blacks were baptised there too. These would be mainly the servants of the Everton merchants. We have a few of these in our family.

Bye

Taffy

Taffy, nice one mate. I'll pass on this info to the ladies he'll be interviewing. I can't recall one of the ladies' names, but she wrote a treatise on the black population of Liverpool. I'll also ask Bob who is on the building commitee at St George's Church if he could find out some info. I used to know the vicar in St George's, but he's moved on and I haven't met the new lady vicar yet.:PDT_Aliboronz_11:
