View Full Version : Pubs of Liverpool
MissInformed 12-02-2006, 07:28 PM Just thought this would make for an interesting thread guys...
Just to post some pics of your fave pubs, or share memories, stories, etc...
PhilipG 12-02-2006, 09:08 PM Both, please! :)
I've got a few of Dingle which are no longer standing.
MissInformed 12-02-2006, 09:14 PM Past or present?
as philip said...both please!
Just thought it would be interesting since everyone has obviously got a fave one...and everyone has been to one...
PhilipG 12-02-2006, 10:08 PM Here's one I snapped this evening.
It's in a little road opposite the Slaughterhouse.
I accidentally deleted my pic of the slaughter house!
Ah well I can get a new improved on my new cam.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
I plan to go out and do some tomorrow anyway.

looks really atmospheric in the dark with the lights and all...
wallasey 12-03-2006, 03:58 PM I got a few Liverpool Pubs yesterday, Three of them worse for wear, and one of them in the finest bit of health...

King Edward Pub, Roberts Street Hard to think that this pub is worth £3m! I used to think that this pub should be conserved, but looking at it now, It has no real merit about it and the land could be used for something like a nice tower block. Having said that, the location isn't exactly ideal. You have two major roads surrounding two sides of the site, and the nearest bus service is varibly in-frequent. Tricky one really!
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/7451/imgp4650fn7.jpg
The Eldonian?, Vauxhall Road/Eldon St, Vauxhall Hard to think that this and many pubs alike were once the centre of the community. Just shows how things change over time ay? Actually, this pub still has most of it's fixtures and fittings left in it; I could see it all through the un-drawn window as I walked past!
EDIT: This pub is (or was) called "The Glass House" as seen on Page 2 of the "How Liverpool used to be" thread.
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/8175/imgp4677rx6.jpg
Pub on Mere Lane/Heyworth Street, Everton I must confess that I have fogotten the title of this pub which stands in the shadow of Everton Library! But what a nice looking pub this is! All that mock-tudor detail looks great on this building and is something which would be greatly missed if anything were to happen to it.
http://img458.imageshack.us/img458/8486/imgp4651pa0.jpg
http://img309.imageshack.us/img309/6000/imgp4686pw6.jpg
The Granton Pub, Granton Street/Breckfield Road, Breckfield I bet there were many a laugh in here once! But I think that the bottom image sums up what devistation this part of the city has endured. Breckfield was once a thriving community with a real community spirit. Now, estates surround one side of Breckfield Road, whilst on t'other side, terraces are derelict and waiting to be pulled down. I think that Breckfield Regeneration need to look at themselves and think about what they are doing. I think that they are going about this in the wrong way. It isn't the terraces that need demolishing, it's the estates. True, the terraces need a bit of tidy-ing up, but demolision isn't the answer. They aren't doing this area any favours by demolising swathes of streets that are now derelict. If anything, they are putting Breckfield at a larger disadvantage.
On that note, I will get me coat!
The Mock Tudor one is the Mere Bank, quite nice inside.
MissInformed 12-03-2006, 07:27 PM Great pics...
My boyfriend Phil took this of The Mayfair?? on Stanhope Street last week...
I very rarely stay in a pub for more than 2 pints and love crawls round old traidtional pubs. Went down Vauxhall Road after a match recently, must have taken in 6 or 7 pubs and ended up in the Vauxhall Vaults on Vauxhall Road near Tithebarn St. About ten years ago I did a Scottie Road crawl, there nust have been 9 or 10 pubs then but sadly only 3 are left.

it was called the bricklayers arms when it was pulled down. (page 53)
it is under the heading Beer House, and closed in 1919....
could be?
ChrisGeorge 12-04-2006, 05:03 PM Hi all
Could anyone get a picture of the Saddle pub. I believe it is on Fountains Road, Liverpool 4. This is the pub where, in the first story told about the origins of the Maybrick Diary, Mike Barrett said that he had received the document from his drinking buddy, Tony Devereaux, a typesetter at the Echo. In that first story, his wife Anne and Mike himself claimed they knew nothing about the Diary before the handover in the pub.
Anne, who now calls herself by her maiden name, Anne Graham, is now claiming she in fact gave the Diary to Tony to give to Mike, certainly a strange scenario, and the Diary had been in her family since 1950 or before. Although note that this claim does not make it old and nor does it make it authentic.
The latest news is that Mr. Barrett is going to be at the upcoming May 2007 Maybrick Trial at the Liverpool Cricket Club in Aigburth and threatens to "to tell the full and truthful story of how he came into possession of the diary and how the pressure of the world's media affected his health. He is also prepared to answer questions from the audience" according to event organizer Chris Jones (http://forum.casebook.org/showthread.php?t=1328&page=7).
All the best

Will see what I can do, but I wonder if it will still be there or not seeing as Fountains Road has pretty much been obliterated by estates. But, I will try and have a look for you this week. If not, it will be next weekend!

PhilipG 12-04-2006, 07:41 PM South Hill Road / Dingle Mount.
June 1992.
I always meant to put this photo on toxteth.net, but could never find it, so I settled for a more distant view.
It was always difficult to tell if the pub was open or not, and I used to walk the dog round that area most days.
Like other parts of Liverpool, this pub was left standing while the neighbourhood was rebuilt, and I loved this block.
But, unfortunately, it has now been demolished.
And I never did go inside.

What a shame, Philip, both that you weren't able to go inside and that the building has been demolished. From the architecture it looks as if it could have been an earlier nineteenth century building unlike some of the later Victorian pubs common in Toxteth and elsewhere in Liverpool. :disgust:

Here's a little history of the building (wot I wrote for toxteth.net).
This pub was originally part of a small terrace of three houses, built some time after 1835, as a map of that date shows two other terraces on South Hill Road, nearer Park Road, with a much smaller building on the site of this pub. The terrace is shown as three houses on the 1847 OS map. Later in the 19th century the Dingle Mount corner was extended to become a public house. In the late 20th century it was one of the few remaining Victorian buildings in the area. It was demolished in 2002 (August?). The site is now grassed over with a Mosaic Cross inserted.
Note the now demolished church of St Finbar to the right.

I'm not surprised.
I could usually see dim lights inside, and it always seemed to have a "For Sale" sign.
BTW, the South Hill, the next nearest pub before Park Road, has just been demolished.

All these decent pubs closing down in well off areas is due to them being choked with smoke. Many people just will not go in them any more.

Hi Steve
Many thanks for confirming that the Saddle Inn, Fountains Road, Anfield, is still there.
I misspoke earlier when I said the original handover of the Maybrick Diary between Tony Devereux and Mike Barrett took place there. The two of them did know each other from drinking together at the Saddle but that is not how the story of Mike's acquisition of the Diary was originally told.
Checking Shirley Harrison's 1993 Hyperion edition of The Diary of Jack the Ripper, p. 4, she says that it was after Devereux fractured his hip "around Christmas 1991" and Mike would call round to do shopping and other chores for Tony, that the handover took place:
"One day, a few months later, when he arrived at Tony's house there was a parcel wrapped in brown paper on the table.
"'Take it. I want you to have it. Do something with it,' was all Tony said."
The rest, as they say, is history.

Love all the pub pics posted here:PDT_Piratz_26:
The Beehive is a cracking pub. It's a bit like the Tardis. It looks like a small pub on the outside, until you walk in. It also stretches back a bit and has a restaurant in the rear. Good, honest people drink there too. Sebo and I had a pint and a meal there last year. I was halfway through my meal when I realised I left my camera 20 minutes before in the Bar area. I ran back there in a panic and the camera was gone. By this time, I was bricking it! "Are you looking for a camera, luv?" came a voice from behind the bar. One of the customers handed it in to the staff. I couldn't thank the person enough who handed it in:PDT_Aliboronz_24:

Hello Dave
Good to hear about the happy ending to the story of your mislaid camera in the bar of the Beehive, Paradise Street. It's certainly heartwarming and reassuring to know there are still some honest people!
Chris
PhilipG 12-17-2006, 11:02 PM Thanks for the picture of the Swan, Dave, and the others, of course.
Happy memories.
I used to belong to the Merseyside Postcard Club, and we had our monthly meetings there for a few years.
(That was when there was a chippy over the road in Seymour Street).
After which we met at the YMCA, and finally at the Bluecoat Chambers.

Broadgreen Road, Old Swan This scene is so much improved since those tenements went! I wonder how old this pub really is; Apparently, it was started when the turnpike between Liverpool and Warrington and Manchester was built (now the A57). This was a popular stop off for Stagecoaches which probabbly secured trade at the bar and has done ever since, but in another form of a Stagecoach!

The Old swan is alleged to date from the late 1700s, notice the bricked up window which was supposedly done to avoid paying too much tax when it used to be based on how many windows were in a property.

PhilipG 12-24-2006, 08:42 PM Hi Bunf.
1 was The Royal.
Here's how it looked in June 1992.
4 was the Greenland Arms.
5.
If it's exactly opposite the Swedish Church, and on the corner of Greetham Street, it is listed in 1936 as being occupied by Guinness, Brewers.
Even so, I don't think it was actually run as a pub - probably just their offices in Liverpool.
Does anybody know if Guinness was brewed (or even bottled) in Liverpool?

If it's exactly opposite the Swedish Church, and on the corner of Greetham Street, it is listed in 1936 as being occupied by Guinness, Brewers.
Even so, I don't think it was actually run as a pub - probably just their offices in Liverpool.
Does anybody know if Guinness was brewed (or even bottled) in Liverpool?
excellent info and pic thank you sir!
a very merry christmas to you

wallasey 12-28-2006, 05:30 PM Sorry Ste, just spotted your post. This is the one on the left of West Derby Rd as you go into town. I think it closed last year. I took this pic in 2003 along with these others.
http://www.liverpoolpictorial.co.uk/pubcrawl/index.htm
It closed because it was meant to be pulled down for the Merseytram which never got built. This is the same case with the Botanic on Picton Road.

Make sure you submit it.
If you just preview it & do nothing else, you lose it.
Hello Philip,Ive just tried that on a New Thread "The Floating bridge at the Pier Head" Copied and Pasted from Photobucket and Submitted and Nothing...Just the Gobblydeegook..Thanks.
When you are doing a thread go to the "manage attachments" section of the "additional optoins" bit underneath the main box. It should give you the option to upload a picture from your PC.
Does anyone ever take pics of the Pub signs?
I got the Idea of taking pics of the signs too while In town last month and was reminded of Liverpool Views So I thought I'd expand to taking pics of signs too, not just buildings, Incase the weather was crap.

Ron Formby's been trying to get the old bank on Scottie turned into a local history centre. If you check out his website there's a wealth of local talent such as ex pro footballers who will donate their medals for show instead of keeping them in a cabinet at home. There's loads of history in that area, St Martin's cottages the first municipal housing in Europe, Victoria Square which won an architectural advanced design award and the Eldon Street clinker flats, the first prefabricated housing ever, pioneered by John Alexander Brodie. Then there's the Eldon Grove model from the Museum of Liverpool life (on loan) and my tenements model. He's now proposing the Pontack since that has fallen into disuse.

I remember there was a plan to try and get some minibus tours going of the areas heritage, I really hope that's still on the table and can become a success.

Gerard - calm down, calm down dear it's only a commercial :)
I hope you don't think I had anything to do with the removal of your dvd off the scottie press site as I certainly have no juristiction over Ron and as you know I think it's brill and I think we appreciate each others ventures and bringing the Gerard Gardens area some recognition.
Ron's idea for the Pontack could actually save it from demolition in the long run and as i've witnessed a number of my old addresses bite the dust, I think it should be something you might consider worth supporting.
The fantastic pool achievements that you once emailed me were indeed just that - fantastic and of course they would take pride of place in your ma's arl place, i'm sure she'd be very very proud of you. It wouldn't be a case of Pontack or Gerard Gardens experts coming out of the woodwork, all those ex residents have a story to tell as we've seen at these screenings and book launches. Tommy O'Keefe has some fantastic old photos of the area as does Joe Devine as you know, Mr Ryan in the bungalow at the top of your road was one of the first families in the Gardens in the mid 1930s when he moved from Christian Street where he was born.
I had my first shandy in the Ponnie after many years being served at the hatch with lemo and crisps so to keep the old building there as a heritage centre would be far more fitting than it's most recent use as a private detective agency me arl mate. Great pub photies by the way.

Phil. Mainly late 90s - I have about another 60 of these, I posted some on another thread, past Liverpool images I think. The Shenanagans one is more recent though because it was the Rising Sun until a few years back, the Brunswick is now closed down.
I did a few along the dock road like Bonkers and The Sandhills before they were demolished. I did the A1 at LLoyds during demoltion and the Dominion is looking a bit sad these days.

I only got onto doing the pubs in the late 90s because Freddie O'Connor beat us all to them so I didn't really see the point but I took them just to keep them because at least they were in colour.

It's interesting what prompts us to take photos.
I watched the Rialto burn down in the riots (1981), and wondered where all the other cinemas in Liverpool were, so I did some research and started photographing them all in 1982.
I started photographing the tenements in the late 80s but only got around so many before some were demolished. I missed out on my own ones near Scottie but luckily a local chap called Joe Devine took loads. Co-incidentally I'd just started reading Freddy O'Connors 'It all came tumbling down' - I honestly can't remember what came first - whether that influenced me - or whether i'd just started taking them anyway - it's all a bit of a blur - mainly due to drinking 5 nights a week ha ha.

"It all came tumbling down" influenced me as well.
I knew Liverpool had lost a lot in the War, but that was a drop in the ocean compared to what went in the 1960s - and the demolition continues.
Most of the pubs seemed to survive the 1960s, but they're getting pulled down at an alarming rate now.
Don't get me started on the cinemas!
The Futurist, the Scala, the Bedford in Walton, and the Princess in Kirkdale are all threatened with demolition.

"He's now proposing the Pontack since that has fallen into disuse."
As your well aware Ged my Mam who was born in Gerard Street and then grew up in Gerard Gardens took the Pontack and was the longest serving tennant of nearly 20 years in the Pub..I myself grew up in the Pub before moving into Gerard Gardens when I got Married..Does this mean we are gonna have Ponnie experts everywhere Now..People who Didnt even know the place existed when it was open...I wont be able to sleep Lad with the thought of that...Ehh..
Fair point Gerard. but if they dont open these places then i would never learn of the area. Im not from there but my family all lived there and its great for me to learn where my roots are. the Scottie press and lots of people , you and Ged included have let me see what the place was like and i get an understanding of the place. My dad was proud to be from Scottie. all my ancestors settled there from Ireland. Plus if they opened the Pontack i could listen to people like you telling me how it was. Sometimes when im out i get talking to old people and leave me mates having a drink, when i come back they say was he a Scottie roader and i say yes. thats what its like for me. I love hearing about the place.
Gnomie 01-18-2007, 08:11 PM Gerard Mate i dont blame you for anything. i just want to learn about the Scottie area. as i said people like you have learned me loads.

Ross08 01-19-2007, 01:45 AM I've recently opened a website at www.pubpix.fotopic.net
You'll see quite a few local pubs on there (Although there are loads more still to come)
I want to get as many Merseyside pubs on there as I can, and that is a time consuming task. If anyone would like to contribute at all, drop me a line at
rosscampbell17@aol.com
Of course, any material provided will be credited to yourselves.
Good comments Gerard, don't blame you one bit mate for feeling like that and absolutely everything you've said is correct from your perspective but Ron'll have a different tack, like he did advertise it in the paper and on the homepage, and just like my stuff, it's demoted to the St. Joseph's archive page as and when new articles are put on by him, it's just that I had a book or model or Paul had a screening coming out every few months or something and not a one off - anyway, enough of that - it all started because of you and an ex-pat having a barny over how run down the area had become and I thought the scottie press guest book had never been so lively with true 'straight from the heart' comments which is what it's all about - go on the forum now and it can be a week before anyone comments. This board is far more lively and has a lot more amateur sleuths and photographers finding out lots of interesting facts and figures. Keep your photies and comments coming Gerard, they are great.
There's that Grafton move of yours again........... :gossip:

That's a toughie, Carrie.
Even the "A Pub on Every Corner" books rarely say just how old any of the pubs are, and I can't find the Queens in it.
Anyway, it's shown as "Hotel" on the 1890 OS map, and I know that area was built in the 1870s.

especially in the city centre.
Old fashioned pubs have more character than new trendy bars.

Vauxhall Road, Vauxhall What this building will be missed for is probably the fact that it is built out of yellow sandstone. This type of building material is very rare in this part of the country which is why neigbouring buildings are built out of either red sandstone or brick. To me, this looks Yorkshire-esque with all of it's detailing and such like. I didn't know that it was to be demolished though, just imagined that simple maintanence was being carried out to make it sell-able.

There are some right divvies, or perhaps they've got a guilty conscience.
I was in Smithdown Road the other day, and a lady (sorry, ignorant cow) was in a car screaming at me to put my camera away.
I carried on snapping, and without looking at her car, gave her a discrete "V" sign.

That's why I try to angle me camera upwards; it's why most of my images are mainly of upper stories! But it's happened to me twice which does knock you back slightly. Might get some business cards printed to avoid confusion.
Just one pub today, did get others but my image size editing is taking slightly longer than anticipated!..

Clifton Road East, Tuebrook A small backstreet pub in Tuebrook. Anyone know who the Clifton's were? I tried looking them up in my "History of Liverpool Suburbs Book" but they didn't get a mention. My guess is that they were the local land owner from when Tuebrook was an agricultural district and so when the area was built up, the name was remembered through roads and pub names.

Is that the plain old Brook House again? Last time I went in there about 5 years ago it was one of those horrible Its A Scream themed pubs with teenagers getting stoned everywhere.
It's Scream themed still like the one In town In some street off hope street, packed with hippy students who need to be smashed!

http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/223/20070128073hh1.jpg
The Edinburgh and the FairfieldPrescot Road, Kensington. Two pubs opposite Prospect Vale close to the border with Old Swan. I would imagine that these two buildings are quite old and may date from when the road was a stagecoach route out of the city to the likes of Warrington and St Helens.
http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/4381/20070128125qq1.jpg
The Earl Marshall, Earle Road, Edge Hill Not the best image but it is boarded up. It wasn't a pleasant experiance beong round here as the pub sign was squeeking in the wind. I could hear it whilst I walked up Mulliner Street where all the houses are derelict. It was a rather eery but fitting sound.

All the Pubs around Earl, Lawerence and Wellington road nearly end up always opening and reopening!
I wonder If some close them and damage them on purpose when they're low on cash and get money off their Insurance.
Some dude my dad sold his shop too did that with his pub once except he set It on fire. It's one on Lark Lane opposite the black pub that used to be the Masonic.
The Railway Inns got a new pub sign now too so as soon as theres a blue sky I'll take a pic of it.
I got the old sign In my Flickr though.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:

Twas going to take one of the pub too but I get paranoid If someone was going to come out and ask about It or people around look at ye.
Got a ton of Greenbank ones though I'll put up later.
On that list theirs a Grapes On Allerton Road In Woolton and A Grapes On Knight Street behind Rodney street too.
The 'other' Rising Sun, known locally as Mrs. Macks but now disused though somebody bought it and had scaffolding put up around it last year, apparently to live in.
The tenements are the top block of Portland Gardens. Interesting that the street sign here is Portland Street but is now Green street and has been rearranged. The Chemist is now a corner shop and the corner facing is the health centre.
Another street further along Vauxhall road was changed from Hopwood street to Gem street and then back to Hopwood street recently for some reason?

Some of my mates from Canny, as well as my Mum and Dad, moved out and upped sticks in Crocky and that was where we met up before moving on to the the back room at the Sandon before the match. Great pics. I still get my chips from the Britannia chippy just across the road from the (ex) pub whenever I'm in Crocky. You can get a bucketload of chips for £1.20 at current prices:unibrow:

Hi Ged
Portland Street was the next street to Burlington Street going towards Hornby
Street but between both streets on Vauxhall Road was a street called Green Street which went to Titchfield Street this is on a map from 1923 also Hopwood Street when it was changed to Gem Street mybe this was in memory of the
Gem picture house that was on Vescock Street which became Sillys Club .

tricky 02-10-2007, 07:42 PM I don't remember where I got this from, I can't make out the name of the pub on the corner but I think it's on Netherfield road, looking at the lay of the land I would suggest it's looking south ? PhilipG 02-10-2007, 08:05 PM I don't remember where I got this from, I can't make out the name of the pub on the corner but I think it's on Netherfield road, looking at the lay of the land I would suggest it's looking south ? I have read of the name of the building in the distance on the other side of the road, but of course forget.
The pub says "Atlantic", but that's definitely the Salvation Army's Ann Fowler Home.

Im 99% sure Tricky that your Photo was taken at the Top of Roscommon St looking toward Shaw St,The Tug Boat pub would have been just Behind the Photographer.
Gerard 02-10-2007, 09:13 PM This Photo taken from St George's Hill 13th July 1967.
You can make out Netherfield Rd Centre Picture and Roscommon Street is just in the Picture leading down to Gt Homer St,,I reckon your Photo tricky was taken in that area Looking Left along Netherfield Rd as we look.

Looking Back along Netherfield Road, Roscommon St is in the Distance just before the Tugboat pub which can be seen behind to the right of the Taxi
Your Photo would have been taken in the Area to the left of the Taxi looking toward the photographer who took this photo..

That pub is on the corner of either China St or India St, not sure which one.
Thanks guys for all the pics around Netherfield Rd, brings back a lot of memories to me as that was my neck of the woods when I was growing up.:PDT_Piratz_26:
Netherfield road= Pure evil when your bike breaks are broke!
Think my mum grew up around Netherfield for little bit when she was a kid. My mum mostly lived In Woolton though I think.
Pogue Mahone in Seel St is perhaps the most authentic Irish pub.
Paul, the Braddocks pic is from 1959 and they are newly opened.

Blimy that pub features heavily in Slemen's books from cats sitting in a circle to the infamous time slip that occured there! Plus it does excellent beer too :PDT_Aliboronz_24:
Ross08 02-13-2007, 03:08 AM Personally, Ma Egertons is my favourite Liverpool ale house. Its great to take a step back in time and go for a quick 'alf a Guinness in Ma Edgy's of a lunchtime.
We did have a good night about three weeks ago in McHale's Irish bar by The Crown in Lime Street. It was a Friday night and when we got in there about 8.30 it was pretty quiet, but by 9 it was packed. There was a good singer on and we're gonna go back. Does anyone know who he is or if he's a regular?
Should have asked him his name really. It's a cracking night out though.

wallasey 02-14-2007, 10:40 PM Hi Wallasey
Have you got a pic of The Dock Hotel , its just by the Tunnel
My family ran it for years.
Apologies for the delay....

The Dock Hotel, Freeman Street, Bhd This sits at the bottom of Corporation Road and is next to the now defunct dock railway. The A554 Tower Road is on the other side of the railway and provides a link between Seacombe and Woodside. Watson Street is to the right and runs upto Conway Street and Charing Cross (via Rendell Street)
Now, how about your competitors??

Meadows Hotel, Watson Street/Conway Street, Bhd I love the ornate detailing on this building but I don't think it's a pub anymore.

The Cygnet, St Anne Way/Watson Street, Bhd Now derelict and was suffering from vandalism on the gable end.

The North Western, Cleveland Street, Bhd Still going strong despite the fact that most of it's old neighbourhood has been cleared and built on with new housing.
Hope you enjoyed this part of Birkenhead; It was certainly a pleasure to walk round en-route home to Liscard.
Gerard, Thanks for yer digging, much appreciated!
