A LEGENDARY pub which once hosted infamous after-hours council meetings will soon reopen.

Dale Street?s Vernon Arms closed in 2004 and fell derelict.

New landlord Jimmy Monaghan now hopes he and his family can breathe life into the much-missed boozer.

In its mid-1980s heyday, it was dubbed Liverpool?s ?politburo?.

Militant Tendency stalwart Derek Hatton frequented the watering hole before going to meetings in the municipal buildings and annexe on the other side of Dale Street.

He told the ECHO: ?More decisions were taken there than were ever taken in the chamber.

?I have got wonderful memories of the place. You met before meetings and after meetings.

?They used to have ?stay behinds?, when they locked the doors and people would finish their drinks.

?You had more problem getting out then in.? more (http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2009/03/27/derek-hatton-s-favourite-liverpool-pub-to-reopen-its-doors-100252-23244494/2/)

Another one bites the dust eh.:PDT_Xtremez_42:

I heard on the Grapevine only this week that the Merton was going to become a Wetherspoon pub. To be honest, I found this a little hard to believe.

Perhaps J.D. Wetherspoon are going to build a new pub on the site?

Seems to be unusual timing though if they are - considering the recession and all that...

I have to say it is good to see this thread includes the rest of the Merseyside area...we have such a diverse range of public houses around the banks of the Mersey...most of them are still open. Lets hope they continue to do so for a while!

St. Johns House, St. Johns Lane now houses Dr Duncans.

http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/1995/drduncansstjohnshouse.jpg (http://img530.imageshack.us/my.php?image=drduncansstjohnshouse.jpg)

When this first opened after renovation in 1979/80 it was Rockfords night club and Earl St. Johns but it wasn't always like that - oh no. Back when Dr Duncans (now Pogue Mahone) was in Seel Street - his birthplace - a likely lad from the Swan area used to idle down to work then get down to idle when we were renovating this place.

In the meantime, my mate Chris and I painted this ceiling.

http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/4118/stjohnshouseceiling1.jpg (http://img530.imageshack.us/my.php?image=stjohnshouseceiling1.jpg)

Hanging precariously from a scaffolding with no harnesses or rails, we'd lean out as far as we could get before dragging it around the room (they couldn't afford one with wheels you see)

Then we'd have to dismantle the top layer to get under these very ornamental mosaic arches (which we also buffed up)

http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/1333/stjohnshousearchmosaics.jpg (http://img530.imageshack.us/my.php?image=stjohnshousearchmosaics.jpg)

So that we could paint the lower ceiling. It only took us 4 months as we dragged it out a bit :unibrow:

Having carried out a comprehensive photographing of every pub in Liverpool including Huyton, kirkby and Sefton over the last couple of years. It is true that many were already empty or derelict and since then some more have closed and some have even re-opened. I think the trend now amongst the biggest age range of drinkers is to drink cheaply at home until 11pm then hit the town where more new pubs have opened up in the last 5 years than at any one time since Victorian times. The corner local is becoming a relic of the past.

I'd agree with that. Even when I was at Uni, I'd "pre-load" (lovely term) at home before going into town around midnight. The habit has continued to this day whereby we'd have a bottle before getting a cab straight into town. I only go to the local to watch the match these days.

Noice the poster on the left Echo Pub of the Year
I was passing here today so I called in the Iron Horse on the corner of Sandhills Lane for a pint . I asked the what they were doing to the Atlantic
she told me they were painting it,I was surprised to find out it is run by the same manager as the Iron Horse. It is only opened at the weekends or for functions. Although I came from this area I have never been inside the Atlantic the barmaid kindly opened it up to show me all the old photos ,musical intruments and posters which adorn the walls these are just some of the pics I took

Hi folks not sure if anyone can help me with this? But any info would be helpful, This pub was ran by my relies back in the 1800's, from around 1850 to 1871 I last found it on the 1891 census still listed as a pub but with a different family at the helm. Can anyone tell me anything about its history or perhaps someone may have an old pic of the pub. This site was a great find and you all seem such nice people, hope to visit often.:)

Ged

Hiya marymint. I have a list of the pubs that existed on that side of the road which will have been the stretch from Leeds Street to Sherwood Street. Do you know which street it was on the corner of (if any)

There was a WSV - Wine and spirit vaults on the corner of Maddrell Street (formerly Slate St) in the 1800s which became the British Queen Vaults later on.
In 1908 the manager was James Hamilton.

Could this be the one as the only others seem to be the Trafalgar Arms (formerly the Freemasons Arms pre 1800s) - this was on the corner of Upper William St.

Nearer town was Dodd Vaults on the corner of Sprainger Street named after the manager Thomas Dodd. In the 1980s it became O'Gorman's bar. This actually was also a SV pre 1870s. A photo of this is on my site below.

Hiya Ged, thanks for the quick reply. I can give you some more info which I got from the census. Here goes in 1861 my man Hugh Ryan was listed as the publican at 110 Gt Howard Street "Spirit Vaults". This is the first entry on the page and a big family living there. The next on the page is what looks like Sprainger St and Whitley Street. On the 1871 census it begins with 108 Gt Howard St, then 110 Gt Howard St a William Connolly being the publican now married to Hugh Ryans neice Rose. The adresses below are what looks like Gt Howard Court? and then Princes Walk?. 1881 has William Connolly as the publican again top of the page is 108 Gt Howard St, then 110 the address of William followed by Gt Howard Court no 2 and then princes walk again. From the A - Z it looks like it is the somewhere between Howards Court? and Sprainger St, what do you think? I suppose it also depends on which way the enumerator ( the census counting guy ) decided to walk!!
Hope this is of some help to you. Thanks again for your time on this one.

Ged
05-14-2009, 11:35 AM
Ah right. Just had a look in my 1908 Edwardian A-Z/Street directory and Dodds Vaults was No.80 so forget that.

110 (not listed - sods law) would have been on the block from Whitley st to Upper William Street.

108 on the corner of Gt Howard st and Princes Walk was M. McCarthy - Chandler and on the opposite corner, No.112 was Nabb & Co. Bakers and flour dealers.

Incidentally the Tam O'Shanter public house was at No.96 and the Shamrock Vaults at No.140(not listed in Freddy O'Connors pub on every corner book)

Sorry but that little investigation has drawn a blank.

Couldnt agree more!

At one point, you could start at the Hillside Pub on Liverpool Road Huyton, near the border with Prescot, then have a bit of a crawl all the way down to the Greyhound and Knotty Ash. In between you would find The Bluebell, The Oak Tree, The Eagle & Child and The Farmers Arms.
All rough pubs, but all demolished. Only the Oak Tree stands between Prescot and The Greyhound.

The Dead House. It was built circa 1961, and was always dead. It was predicted to be closed and never was while all the rest, more full pubs, closed. I find that strange about pubs. The small pub that has a few dedicated regulars, and appears dead, just keeps going...until now.

The Royal remains as a ruin, after making safe work was carried out.
The William Shakespeare was due to re-open last weekend.
The Pitch Pine has been sold by Punch, but will continue as a freehouse.

Two pics of the Royal, one showing the burnt out inside
The "Shakey" with new signs and unboarded last Friday

The Old Roan on the corner of Copy Lane and Ormskirk Road. First licenced in 1620. In the 1800`s the manager built a smithy around the back with stables, the buildings are still there today. The base of the pub walls had rings set in for travellers to tie their horses to. Must have done good business as it was on a turnpike road

There won't be any pubs left at this rate - 2 more torched - Seaforth this time.
I've lost count now how many have been torched in the last month. On average 2 in nearly all districts ... let's see, West Derby, Huyton, Formby, Walton, where else have I left out ? The former Setter & Vine reduced to a shell and about to be demolished - what is going on !! ??

Phew Zap, I used to go there twenty years ago and it was bad then. Just seemed a lumber house. I remember when I knocked around Salford in the bad old days, thay had a stunt with the pubs in the area. They used to arrange fights in a pub most nights, and after s few days see the boss. They told the boss they could make the trouble go away for a small fee. The fee in those days was about ?50 per week. All the pubs were paying. I knoe there were a lot of long frauds in a lot of the pubs that were looked after, but not been back for a while so don't know what happened.

I read somewhere that we are losing something like 40 pubs a year (not sure if this is meant to be across the UK or in a specific region) and this was predicted when they brought out the smoking ban.

I know you don't agree with this Ged :) .. but it does make you think.

gregs dad

Lindylou it is the supermarket beer prices that are closing the pubs down.
There are a few pubs in town who are always busy because they keep their prices reasonable. On holiday down south last week our local had a happy hour between 5 and 6 when they charged ?2,70 for a pint of Fosters,I don`t know what they charged in the sad hours. In the Midland by Central station it`s only ?2.00 all day and there is never less than a dozen people in it

I was in Bridgnorth last night for a mate's retirement do - at a Wetherspoons. There isn't one near to where I live so don't think I've been in one before. The prices were amazing - don't see how other pubs can compete so together with all the other reasons why pubs are closing down, the situation isn't that surprising. Walking back to our hotel we passed 6 other pubs - all but one were very quiet.

pablo42
08-20-2009, 11:31 AM
I can't see the pubs recovering, cept in the town centres. The rot has set in. I don't think it's got much to do with the smoking ban, but it aint helped, it's more attitudes now. It just seems better to have some friends round for a drink these days.

Ged
08-20-2009, 11:42 AM
That's right Joe and changing trends. I think the ciggy law clouds the issue Lindy - pardon the pun. It is a convenient excuse but I personally don't know anybody that doesn't go out drinking now that did before due to a ban, especially when most places have catered for the ban by building outdoor areas.

My girls and their mates have more and more 'sit offs' until midnight what with clubs staying open until it's nearly daylight - and that's the winter.

Cheap bargain booze shops opening up everywhere and the supermarkets.

There's quite a few such as the Granton and Salisbury in Anfield that have closed and will be bulldozed because of the clearance programme - OI doubt these will be replaced - it's all city centre newbies now.

Between Knotty Ash village hall and Knotty Ash Station there were three pubs. The Knotty Ash, The Wheatsheaf and the oldest one The Lord Nelson. In the middle of thies pubs was the old Knotty Ash Brewery, which later became Kellys Bakery. But I wouldnt know if thies two buildings where still standing. I think the The Rocket in Broadgreen was a Knotty Ash Brewery pub at one time, as one of the windows had Knotty Ash brewery etched in it. Mind you im going back 50 yrs.

No doubt people will think this a joke, but it isn't. I was on a pub crawl in Lancaster (about 1979). One of the girls with us had grown up in a pub and realised that the barman in the pub we'd just entered used to work for her dad.
She went to the bar first and pretended to be a grumpy customer.

'Give us half a bitter and make it snappy'.

He looked at her but said nothing as he pulled her beer.

He put it in front of her but before she could take a drink he whipped his false teeth out and dropped them in her beer!

He then said 'there ya go, aperitif'.

Think about it.

You will have heard the news that Witherspoons are to expand.
Does this company have what it takes to make a 'pub'? They have one close to me, it's been a pub for a very long time, yet I am unsure as to how well they do at keeping a real public house 'real'.
I suppose the question is what is it that makes a pub a pub?

I've heard the plans - and it is great news for anybody looking to work in that industry.
Wetherspoon provide pubs that are very different to what we'd call old, traditional pubs (though they are very good). They offer decent food at good prices and a wide selection. They have guest beers and that sort of thing, if you want it.
I like Wetherspoon pubs and I say good luck to them.

I think there will be a day when all we'll have is these chain-style pubs...

They're going to utterly ruin the pub. For many, it's a meeting point before you climb in to a cab for town, it does decent beer and you can get the duke to the dustman in, but if they go tarting it all up from the outside, it's going to stand out like a sore thumb. I just hope it doesn't start to attract the bad crowd.

Was'nt this pub called the 'Belle Vale' when first built?

Asked the folks and they think it was. It was always known as a rough pub but probably through no fault of its own. It's on the border of Belle Vale and Huyton/Childwall and Belle Vale always had a 'name' to it. I drank in there once and while it wasn't the Ritz, I never came across any trouble myself but as of late, gangs from 'opposite' sides used to sit on each side of the bar and you could smell trouble. I hope it doesn't go the same way as the Highwayman and demolished but once a pub has a name, it always stays.

If they demolish it then it can only go to housing as it's got a decent amount of land.

On another aimless point, me ma can remember the opening night of the Falstaff Pub just up the road on Gateacre Park Drive!

The Justice was situated on the corner of Dale Street and Hatton Garden and named after the nearby courts. Since its demolition a car park has existed on that corner.

My dad drank in The Coronation between 1964 and 1979. Me and my dad played bowls for the Coronation in the early 70s. Sorry to see it closed. It was always a friendly pub until around 1975 when a certain family moved into the area and things took a down turn. Within a few years, lots of the old regulars moved off to The Cat's Whiskers which was always a very well run pub, the Fiveways or The Bridge Inn. Saturday nights in the bar were always good. An old fashioned 'sing-song' and people playing darts and dominoes.
Because of this family who, along with their associates, brought nothing but trouble to the pub, me and the old feller gave the place a miss.
I once heard it was built in the 1930s just in time for the coronation of 1937, hence the name, although the pub sign had George V painted on it. It was supposed to have been one of those large 'road house' type pubs of the period, but in 'A Pub on Every Corner' it says it was built in the 1950s. I would say it had more of the 1930s look to the place. A bit more Art Deco than the 1950s but someone must know. As for Belle Vale, until the late 60s it was a prefab estate with no reputation for trouble. That only happened when the new buildings went up in the 70s.

> Looks like the Childwall Fiveways is on course to re-open any day now. That's if it hasn't already re-opened in the last week or so. The Fiveways is now part of the J.D Wetherspoon chain, as is the Merton in Bootle.

When working till 9pm, I used to have to get the bus along Walton Road/ County Road. Anyhow whilst on the bus, you could see into these pubs from on top of the bus. These pubs were virtually empty midweek. I mean, maybe 1 or 2 people in the bars. I used to think how do these pubs manage to survive. It must not be very cost effective. No wonder so many local pubs are shutting down.

I don't know how I missed your post earlier on, I've only just seen it. Now, that's one pub I've always said I must go in. Looks fab!

Had a few pints in there in the '80 to 85,most sunday afternoons.Went in after it was 'done up',late 80s,didn't like it.It had lost the 'my local' feeling.

The Merebank is open again which is good.

As for new pubs naked lilac, plenty open up and change names but all in the city centre and mainly around Concert Square, clubby types. The old local on the corner type pub is fast becoming a thing of the past as more and more become empty or change use.

The "Brookhouse by me,closed down recently! The manageress said she had to make £5,000 per month, for rent etc, before she could make anything for herself! She had to buy her drink from the landlord(Punch taverns,I think) even though it was available for less, from other suppliers. Seems like these pub companies are just being greedy!! The pub has opened up again, but the place wasn't too busy, when I went, and it reminded me of the "Cygnet",as I knew the guy who was put in there, as a relief manager, but with no great commitment expected to keep the place going,so as posted by Burkhilly,it didn't!

The government are looking at beer ties again but my local brewery (Banks) boss claims that any changes will lead to heavy job losses. Seems to me we've already got that anyway.

It seems they changed the whole system,a few years back, which has led to many pub closures, but I fail to see the logic in it! No pub's,no income?
