What street was/is it on Cad?

Go up Wavertree Road, taskers on your left - straight on at the lights and before you get to the Bears Paw - between Taskers and Bears Paw Pub on the left there is a lovely reconditioned house on the left. It's on Wavertree Road before the road is joined up and goes in to Irvine Street towards the 'ozzy.

Yes. There is a picture of it on my site below together with others of Cases street in general.

My goodness there's a few memories there.
The Dryden - used to get lock-ins in the afternoon. About 4.20 a big truck would pull up outside and sounds its horn.
All the corpy workers would pile out of the pub and climb in the truck - going back to clock off!

Anyone remeber Casey's Bar on Cases St - used to be just past The Globe?

Went in there a lot in the early 70's. The barman was Jimmy Robinson; very camp and absolutely gorgeous when dressed up as Shirley Bassey!
Quite a character.

I think I met him many moons ago. Did he live in Entwhistle heights ? (5th or 6th floor).

For Brother Cad.

Edge Hill Coffee House:

'Probably the oldest pub on the road when open, listed 1820s and located in the original village area of Edge Hill, trading when the vicinity was rural in the early 19th century.

Facing the premises is the church of St. Mary which opened in 1813 and was paid for by Edward Mason, from whom Mason Street gets its name. This photograph is from c1970 when the manager was Cyril Roberts and the adjoining shop was Austworth's tobacconist.

No problem. I'm lucky enough to have acquired the 4 x pub on every corner before 2, maybe 3 of them went out of print so if they're in there and anyone else wants any posting up, just let me know.

yes she was from Tiger bay. ha,ha, read this quote from Kevin.

I think I was introduced to the barman in question, I went in that pub during the 1970s but it's all in the mists of time now.

'Diana Ross' was well known and was a neighbour of my friend who lived in Entwhistle heights - think it was the 4th or 5th floor he lived. I was there one day when he popped in to borrow milk ! :)

I think that barman was *Rosco*. He wore a mohair jumper and I think his first name was Steve. He could multitask !!!! Combined the abilities of males and females and could serve about half a dozen people at the same time.
He later went on to be a male nurse at Walton hospital.

Please correct me if I have got the wrong person.

The building to the left is part of the same block which had a youth club in it that I went to - around '65 or '66 I'd guess. Trying to remember the name and 'Noblet House' sounds about right.

Originally listed as a brewery at 183 Burlington Street in the 1840s, the building on the corner of Vauxhall Road two decades later was named the 'Victoria' Public house. By 1908 the premises had been renamed the 'Black Dog' public house and remained so until its closure around 1970.

Some time later, the original Burlington Street sign was removed and a new one placed further up the street on the same building and an advertisement hoarding was placed on the wall to cover an ornate sign which reads 'WALKERS WINE AND SPIRIT STORES' . The building is currently a William Hill bookmakers and has been for some time.

This week the advertisement hoarding was removed and though I've taken a photo of the revealed sign, it is proving too large to upload on here.

Hi all

Could anyone get a picture of the Saddle pub. I believe it is on Fountains Road, Liverpool 4. This is the pub where, in the first story told about the origins of the Maybrick Diary, Mike Barrett said that he had received the document from his drinking buddy, Tony Devereaux, a typesetter at the Echo. In that first story, his wife Anne and Mike himself claimed they knew nothing about the Diary before the handover in the pub.

Anne, who now calls herself by her maiden name, Anne Graham, is now claiming she in fact gave the Diary to Tony to give to Mike, certainly a strange scenario, and the Diary had been in her family since 1950 or before. Although note that this claim does not make it old and nor does it make it authentic.

The latest news is that Mr. Barrett is going to be at the upcoming May 2007 Maybrick Trial at the Liverpool Cricket Club in Aigburth and threatens to "to tell the full and truthful story of how he came into possession of the diary and how the pressure of the world's media affected his health. He is also prepared to answer questions from the audience" according to event organizer Chris Jones (http://forum.casebook.org/showthread.php?t=1328&page=7).

All the best

Chris

Has Barrett made up his mind whether the diary is a hoax or not? I think his behaviour has discredited the whole project.

Some great photos of Old pubs here. I remember the King George in the mid to late 80s when it was still going strong. It was a lovely building. Old buildings like this should be preserved and if nothing else, transformed into apartments. They are Victorian/Edwardian and we shall never see the likes of them again.

The corner of Dickenson Street/Park Lane is just a patch of grass. There are still several old warehouses South, around Jamacia Street/St. James's Street. (this is the continuation of Park Lane).
This site will give you some idea of what the area was like.

triton was a bass house, 5 steps up to the front door, used to have a beer there after getting of the iom boat before jumping the bus home, the beehive was good for a few swift halfs on a saturday afternoon with my girlfriend as they had some nice comfy couches you could spread out on.

Anybody remember a pub on Boaler St run by the Murray family? After John (I think) Murray died it was run by his wife, Hilda. For a while she was helped by her son, also called John but known universally as 'Ginger'.
This would have been late 70's and early 80's.

This is way off topic, too, but I took a photo of Randy Turpin's Bar (top of the Great Orme, Llandudno) in 1960!

To be honest i know nothing of randolph turpin-only that he would not fight jimmy bray-but maybe that was just paper talk. Ive been to the top of the great orme though-never knowing it was his place once-wow-thanks for that. Was randolph big in liverpool then???? I have an article cut out from one of the papers of the time-around 1943 where it was saying jimmy bray and his team were trying to arrange a fight between him and randolph but he kept backing out . Insinuating that he may have been afraid to fight jimmy-so i presume from that that randolph had a reputation ???????
sorry-gone off topic there-but it is kind of associated with pubs -kind of......

That card is rare.
It would have cost about £25 five years ago, which is about the amount of time I've not bothering buying more postcards.
In the 1960s I used to pay 6d each before Stanley Gibbons published the first postcard catalogue, which started people realising they were worth something.

Highland Home, Hill Street/Sefton Street: I've got a feeling this will be the next pub to go, as a demolition team is removing all the wood into a large skip. This is normally a prelude to demolition. If anyone wants to bag another Hill Street pub, then there is another former pub at the bottom of Hill Street...The Little Woodman. A pic of it is here:

Just found out that the old curio in park lane was bombed in the war-and maybe a plane crashed into it so the story goes.???? And maybe a child living in the pub at the time was killed and others including the landlord james bray was injured. Apparently they repaired his leg with wood fibres that they were exprerimenting with in those days. And one of the sons-jack bray -appeared in the time magazine in america on page two with a pic saying have you seen this man-they were searching for him for being a communist apparently. Is there any way i could prove wether these tales were fact or rumour.??? Any advice or help would be most welcome.thankyou

Inside one of Liverpool's newest bars. Formerly a bank in Old Hall Street, after closure it became Brokers bar in the 1980s and more recently the Via Veneto restuarant and bar. Still under the ownership of local Highfield Gardens lad Steve Tierney, it has become the Cot'n Bar - right facing the cotton exchange which is now a registery office.

There was another pub at the bottom of the street called The Coburg but
known to the locals as The Devil`s and one at the top of the street called The Bishop`s. Spent many a time in the Devil`s after fishing trips with my

Philip, that's a cracking photo, thanks for sharing. It really is a shame to see the way pubs finish up, all we can do is be grateful it's not been knocked down.

The Coburg's still open and there were quite a few drinkers there on Wednesday. I took a photo but it's on my other computer - I'll add it tomorrow.

The city council have ANNOYED me well today.

I wanted to have a nose around town so rather than drive in, I thought I'd get the 79 in to town and have a nose along Wavertree Road rather than watching the traffic.

Now I know that the large snooker hall (mannicks?) had gone and indeed so had the Botanic - they didn't bother me that much, but there was one building which I took a fancy to. Never drank in it, but loved the large sign on the front and it just seemed a lovely little corner boozer.

And today - it's just been knocked down. No warning, no 'get your pictures before it goes' - gone like that. I'm talking about the Bridge Inn.

Is this the council's answer? Pull anything down that is boarded up to make the place look nicer? What'll go there now? Sod all because it's not prime land. So more of the bland wall will go there rather than a boarded up boozer which could have been turned in to a nice little shop.

I've only got a single picture of the pub from when I was in the car and snapped on the way past, anyone got a better one?? :disgust:

Around the corner from the Victoria pub, Victoria rd (you can see the backs of them from there in fact) - go down the little street that leads to Sefton Pk, I think there's a newsagents on it, then turn right and go along to the end near the flats.

I used to drink in the Bridge, as I worked just behind it. The top of the buildings behind can be seen. The Bridge was a typical old fashioned two roomed pub. Must be around 200 years old...and destroyed by digger in minutes.

Although, I hate Edge Lane, I'm going to go there and take a pic of the Wellington Pub Sign, nice cartoon looking boot on the sign.

The Wellington closed down at the start of this year, I more or less used to live there for the past 12 years ( even worked behind the bar at one point for a few months), along with The Dryden on the opposite side also gone.
8 years ago there was The Travellers Rest and the Edge Lane now at the Old Swan end theres no pubs at all, from 5 to 0 in a few years ....**** shame.

I wonder how many halfway houses there are in Liverpool? For a couple of years I drank in the one in Woolton. Got banned in early 70's for having a hurdle race across tables in the large back room - the one that became the restaurant. Thought it a bit mean of the landlord but the fact that we were both nude might have had something to do with it.
:PDT_Aliboronz_24:

Went back after two years as I heard that the manager who'd barred me had long since left. Went to the bar in the back room (not yet a restaurant) and queued for ages to get a drink. Increasingly frustrated as people the bar maid recognised, who arrived long after me, got served first - she was actually passing pints over my shoulder to people behind me. Eventually I let my frustration show and a guy came up behind me and asked me what the problem was - he was the new gaffer. I said something about the 'silly cow' behind the bar giving preferential treatment to customers arriving long after me.
His response was '...that silly cow is my wife'.

Back in the place for 15 minutes after two years absence and barred again!

I'll have to get those two pubs above!

Is The Holt in Kensington going to be pulled down?? I see that the adjoining row is set to be cleared but the plans don't shed any light on the future of the pub!

The Wirral Globe had a story on this, the theory is that if a pub is able to remain competitive, they need to be more flexible than serve ale. Several pubs over this side have also closed with others feeling the strain.

Not really a pub, more of a bar / nightspot.

http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i36/taxipix/DinosBarDeaneRdKensingtonDerelict07.jpg

This bar looks as though it has been derelict for a while.

DEANE RD, Kensington - Runs between Edge Ln. and Kensington opposite the Littlewoods building.

Does anyone have any information about this place, does anyone know when it closed?

Great thread, I only just noticed it, me eyes have gone scabby looking at all 37 pages.:unibrow:

Deanos, I'm pretty sure used to be the N.U.R. club that closed down in the mid 80's.

And that photographer that went round the town with the trilby on was Tony Rome (yeah like that was his real name). I've got a few photos of me and my mates from around 1970 taken by Tony.

Chris

Sad indeed, with the demise of the Bull there's nothing left on that road now till Bootle. The Edinburgh on Prescot Road Fairfield has shut down recently as well. This pic was taken in March, wonder how many instances there are in the city suburbs now of two pubs next door to each other still open.
