View Full Version : Liverpool Graffiti Art
A LIVERPOOL graffiti artist who painted walls for the Biennial arts festival has been cleared of criminal damage charges.
The artist, who goes by the name of Stok, had faced jail after using a building in Roscoe Street to display his artwork.
Prosecutors at Liverpool magistrate's court argued permission was not granted for use of the city centre building, a charge that Stok always denied.
All charges relating to the property, which was not part of the Biennial festival, were dismissed at trial through lack of evidence.
Stok, who has been an artist for over 20 years, said: "The days of the blanket use of the word 'graffiti', are numbered - street art is bigger than that.
"I've never been so happy in all my life and am completely relieved at the out-come of the situation.
"This result truly is a victory for the common man."
The ECHO first featured the spray can expert in April, with arts chiefs hailing the regeneration of dowdy and derelict areas of the city through art.
Stok now plans to work alongside community based art programme The Art Organisation in preparation for next year's Biennial.
Art Organisation director Gregory Scott-Gurner said Stok now had full permission to decroate the Roscoe Street building.
He said: "Our aim is to make opportunity where opportunity may not exist.
"We work with and for local communities, with the help of local artists to change places in need of regeneration and add beauty to areas that have been left to ruin."
Stok's solicitor Jeremy Hawthorn said: "My client is pleased to have been rightfully cleared of all charges after having the case proceeding some four months.
"As a community artist it came as a great surprise that he was to be the subject of a possible criminal prosecution, which is not in the spirit of the business to which he is involved.
"I am certain if the prosecution had examined the case thoroughly the case would not have been brought."
No-one from building owners Frenson's was available for comment.

BANKSY is a world renowned, Bristol-based graffiti artist whose artwork is often political and/or humorous in nature. ART thieves disguised as workmen tried to steal the door from a derelict Liverpool building - because it was decorated by graffiti artist Banksy.
He's quite famous and has a few images in Liverpool City Centre. Has anyone got any?

I love Banksy's stuff, but I think he's losing it nowadays. The painting of an elephant at his LA exhibition was way out of order. I emailed his website and asked how he'd feel if he was stripped naked and painted all over. Still waiting for a reply:disgust:

How the hell does he not get spotted by anyone doing this?Probably because the majority of people never look above eye-level and never notice anything remotely suspicious. A guy with a ladder and a paintbucket doesn't exactly draw attention - he could do the bulk of it with it just looking like a big black splodge... then finish it off and run!

Controversial British graffiti artist BANKSY has made fun of MICHAEL JACKSON in a new drawing which went on exhibition in London yesterday (01DEC06).Banksy's drawing is inspired by classic children's tale HANSEL AND GRETEL and features Jackson, who was acquitted of child molestation last year (05), crouching in the doorway of a cottage holding out a sweet (candy) to a young girl and boy.The shock artist - famed for doctoring 500 copies of PARIS HILTON's debut album PARIS - says, "I feel the spirit of Christmas was being lost. It was becoming increasingly uncommercialised more and more."His Jackson drawing is displayed in Santa's Grotto, which is exhibiting graffiti, art and sculpture.

Not quite grafitti but it brightens up a drab gable end dunnit.

I have always liked this art, and have often thought that I'd like to get a 'graffiti' artist to do a piece of work at my home. Perhaps on a wall in the back garden or on a wall inside the house.
I suppose it would be quite hard to find someone to do such a piece of work, unless of course you knew someone personally.
It's a great form of art, which I love, when it's not done somewhere it will cause annoyance.

Stencil Art - Plenty of Graf Artists use this technique.
Two art students who went on a two-year graffiti spree in Liverpool have been spared prison.
Ian Town, 24, and 23-year-old Charlotte Backhouse, both from South Drive, West Derby, admitted 26 charges of damaging property at Liverpool Crown Court.
The couple are believed to have caused damage estimated at about £65,000.
Both were given nine month sentences which were suspended for two years after their university lecturer gave them glowing testimonies.
John Young, a senior lecturer in graphic art at Liverpool John Moores University, said he believed the pair had ceased criminal behaviour by the time of their arrest in 2006. more (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/merseyside/6561357.stm)...

Does anyone know the story behind those faces on the pink plates dotted around the place? I'll get a photo sometime, but its a white face (that looks a bit like the KFC colonel) pulling tongues on a pink diamond-shaped plate type thing.
I've found one on Arrad Street (that side street off Hope Street), one by the Choices and Tescos on Smithdown Road, and two by the railway bridge that crosses over Smithdown just by the Mystery.

In my opinion, graffiti is art, these people put their whole heart and soul into some of their creations and get slaughtered for it by the BTP or the Police. They shouldn't be getting punished because 'it looks bad for the city', Liverpool is the capital of culture for gods sake, there are some amazing graffiti artists in our city...they're the urban culture...It's ART!

A few recent ones:
Rear of old Letters Hotel, Duncan Street/St. James' Street (done at the week-end)
Grafton Street/Stanhope Street (still being worked on today)
Old Windsor Street School (there is also a small mosaic at the bottom of the road safety railings, for those who haven't spotted it yet).

Some really good artists out there . I think there's a place for all this graffitti but not on the streets. No matter how good its done it does tend to look like plain vandalism to me.

Here's a view of Beach Lawn in Crosby with some graffiti on the substation (?)
The graffiti is a bit crap, but i thought the contrast of the old and new was interesting.
[Point of Interest]: The house with the arched attic window once belonged to Thomas Henry Ismay, owner of The White Star Line. Beach Lawn looks over Liverpool Bay. From his window, he could see his ships, entering and leaving The Mersey.
