Great pics of the Park Palace (only joking). This was used a couple of years ago by the people who done the Halloween lanterns at Sefton park (so I'm told). I used to see stuff getting moved in and out, so know it was in use. Must be possible to get inside if they can be tracked down.

Hello all
Have we had anything on the Pavilion, known as the "Pivvy," in Lodge Lane, a theatre in the earlier twentieth century, and later a bingo hall? I can remember circa 1958 going there to see my uncle, Billy Matchett (actually my grandad's brother), appear as a comedian between acts of striptease or, more correctly, erotic tableaus. If anyone saw the recent film with Dame Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins, Mrs. Henderson, it was the same era, in which the semi-naked beauties appeared in tableaus of Robin Hood or King Arthur or whatever, and weren't allowed to move, by order of the Lord Chamberlain. Backstage, I held a bra for one of the young ladies! I was around ten at the time.

I'm not clued up on wether the whole of this block was the theatre as the Beaumont st. side is now the Rob Roy pub.
I wouldn't mind seeing a pic of the old houses at the Lorton st./Buttermere st. junction though (now a car-park to the rear)

The first pictures I ever went to was the Park Palace - the Pally. Every Saturday to watch Batman and Charlie Chan, Roy Rogers, the Three Stooges and a cheap corny film at the end. We always had a TV at home, so the black and white films did not impress me. My first colour film I saw there. It had sailing ships in it. Wondrous to a 5 year old.
It had normal cinema seats at the front (first 1/3) and wooden benches at the back. The kids were only allowed on the benches. The kids would stand on the benches and jump up and down screaming and shouting as the goodies chased the baddies.
I remember as the kids were lining up outside they were always fighting each other. The queue was a big flight every Saturday. The ushers had to "try" and be strict with the kids. They would throw them out the line and chase them home. They would all get back in. When they stopped one fight one would start behind them.
The police had to stop the traffic in Mill ST at the end as the kids piled out, as the never looked and just rushed over the road screaming and shouting in one big mob. They would all be sitting on top of the concrete bus shelters and the police had a job getting them off.
..and they talk of kids today.

1953 OS map showing the Pavilion.
It was built in 1908 around existing property.
The photo was taken in April 1986, a couple of weeks after the fire which destroyed the beautiful auditorium.
It's Maynard Street, looking towards the gutted stage area.

Hi Philip
Fascinating information, Philip. I was wondering why I couldn't find the Pivvy on the map on Toxteth.net which is slightly earlier (1905) and I had not realized that the theatre was not built until 1908. Thanks!
Chris
