Actually, it's just an excuse for me to post this pic I took from Canada Dock:unibrow:

Very nice Dave, I'll see what I've got :)
ChrisGeorge 11-29-2006, 08:25 PM Nice pic, Dave. Do you or anyone know how the proposed gigantic Tom Murphy sculpture planned for the mouth of the Mersey at New Brighton fit in with Fort Perch Rock and the lighthouse?
Chris

Chris
It's a no goer Chris. Has been for a few years I'm afraid. It's a shame, because I'm sure the money spent on the sculpture could have been recouped by the amount of tourists who visited it.
A.D.W 11-30-2006, 01:30 AM Scouserdave do you have any advice about looking after lenses on a camera? How to clean them etc?
jimmy 11-30-2006, 02:19 AM :) Beaut photograph, ScouserDave.Seem to have captured the serenity of the view.
Paul D 11-30-2006, 01:55 PM They moan about towers blocking views of the cathedral and they really know what they're on about in the Wirral of course, where else would want to slap a Morrisons supermarket next to the beautiful Fort Perch rock there? that's a beautiful picture Dave but what that picture needs is a lovely looking supermarket to make it perfect.

scouserdave 11-30-2006, 03:02 PM Scouserdave do you have any advice about looking after lenses on a camera? How to clean them etc?
Not really, apart from having a UV lense attached and keeping your lense cap on in between taking shots. If you really have to clean your lense, use a very mild solution of washing up liquid and warm water. A bit like cleaning your specs.

Thanks for the advice, Dave. I am these days more of a writer than a photographer and mostly take photographs (35 mm slides -- yes I am in the dark ages) for history presentations I give. I will soon though reacquire a scanner and post some of the shots of Liverpool in the Sixties and later that I took, some quite artsy, others mostly straightforward shots of historical buildings in the area that might be of interest to the denizens of the forum.

Hiya Chris,
I can't wait to see your 60's/later Liverpool pics. Seriously! I've got a knot in my stomach just thinking about them!
lindylou 11-30-2006, 04:00 PM I'd love to see them too. :)
wallasey 12-01-2006, 05:40 PM Aplogies for being dormant recently, I hope that these images that I have taken from around Birkenhead will make up for it!
http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/8540/20061115arrowebrook040gj0.jpg
Birkenhead Park Auntumn can be a great time in Birkenhead Park, as this image shows!
http://img278.imageshack.us/img278/7037/20061123001gy9.jpg
Birkenhead ParkI got this en-route to college; This is a great place to be in the morning sun!
http://img278.imageshack.us/img278/622/20061129010ac7.jpg
Rodney Street, Bhead This is one of a few strrets that run up the hill-side from Birkenhead Town Centre. You may be able to pick out some noticable landmarks of you look closely!
http://img471.imageshack.us/img471/2334/20061129015aqi3.jpg
Argyle Street, Bhead This is probably one of the most famous views Birkenhead has to offer and has been caught on many a occasion. Unity can be seen popping its head over the Gasometre on the right.
http://img471.imageshack.us/img471/8666/20061129028aa0.jpg
Frodsham Street, Bhead This shot reminds me a little of Everton Ridge before all of it's houses got pulled down. Here, stairs have had to be installed so that people can get up and down the street!
http://img471.imageshack.us/img471/4653/20061129032mh0.jpg
Olive Crescent, Bhead This scene does look better in the flesh, honest! Birkenhead Priory can be seen in the background with the black spire
http://img463.imageshack.us/img463/3782/20061129035br0.jpg
Olive Mount,Bhead What timeing was that! It was by sheer chance that I was able to get over to this position in time to see a rainbow arc toward the lantern if Paddy's Wigwam. It's only a shame the rainbow wasn't going into the lantern itself really! Now that would have been a picture then!
http://img463.imageshack.us/img463/4282/20061129035asj3.jpg
Olive Mount, BheadI leave you with a close up of the previous image; Pretty chuffed with this to say the least!
Hope you enjoyed a few images of Liverpool from angles that you have probably never seen before!
Brenda 12-01-2006, 05:45 PM Those pics are great Wallasey...very impressive. :PDT_Piratz_26:

wallasey 12-18-2006, 05:44 PM How about a small look at Birkenhead?
http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/5725/20061214cltn006ph4.jpg
Ashburton Avenue, Claughton This is a view over suburban Birkenhead to the two cathedrals; What a cracking view! Behind where I was standing was a house overlooking this impeccable view (it looks better in the flesh, honest!) but it was derelict! How could you not want to have that view on your doorstep? Madness!
http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/4161/20061214cltn007es0.jpg
Upper Flaybrick Road, Claughton This is a small view over the Flaybrick Cemy toward the Princes Dock and Everton Ridge. This is also quite a pleasant view in my opinion with the Everton Water Tower peeping over the skyline.
Now, New Brightondeserves some coverage I think...
http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/664/20061215010zp8.jpg
Egerton Street, N B'ton These houses once overlooked the New Brighton Tower and its extensive grounds. Now, they overlook a large, open, green space which was once a hive of activity.
http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/5968/20061215012oa0.jpg
Egerton Street, N B'ton I never knew these cottages existed! By the looks of it, they are likely to pre-date Atherton who was the man who saw the potential of New Brighton and was the genius behind the Tower and most of the other attractions to which have long since gone. Indeed, New Brighton was never actually made into the full resort Atherton had planned and so it could be argued that it has been a blip since the idea was first concieved.
http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/4958/20061215015fu4.jpg
Tollemache Street, N B'ton The refurbishd building on the Front was the "Chelsea" Bar which went bust a few years ago. The building was then left for a few years before a dveloper decided to turn the building into appartments. Should be quite nice! The terraces in the foreground have such ornate railings don't they?
http://img334.imageshack.us/img334/7432/20061215017pz1.jpg
Victoria Road, N B'ton Mother Redcaps Pub appears to have gone bust! I don't know when this happened but it is a symbol of New Brighton's contiual down spiral. It is such a shame really but New Brighton just doesn't seem to cut it anymore. This will more evident once the Floral Pavillion Theatre closes it's doors. Hopefully, it won't be for long though.
http://img334.imageshack.us/img334/3594/20061215018ws8.jpg
Victoria Road, N B'ton A better view of the old Chelsea Bar. It looks much better now than it did a few years ago, that's for sure!
http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/272/20061215029ll3.jpg
Marine Promonade, N B'ton This is the new Bowling Alley and Laser Quest. It replaces a building from the 60's which was a bit ugly. This building mimiks the amusment arcade which is a little art deco-y in it's own right; The stone work to me looks a little Northumbrian. I say this as most new buildings up there use the same shading of stone but in larger quantities. Anyway, this building is starting to fit in quite well on the New Brighton Prom. I do wonder, however, what the grey panneling will look like in a few years time.
http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/502/20061215030kl3.jpg
Marine Promonade, N B'ton Finally, a trip to New Brighton would'nt be complete without a view over to the Fort and the Lighthouse. The reflection in the Marine Lake is quite pleasant don't you think?

ChrisGeorge 12-18-2006, 06:22 PM Hello Kev
I had to orientate myself for a moment but is your view looking from Otterspool Prom toward Ellesmere Port, with, I assume, Frodsham Hill and Helsby Hill to the left?
Chris
lindylou 12-18-2006, 07:58 PM Wallasey, thanks for posting those fab views. Brings back memories of days out at NewBrighton and walking around those lovely roads.
That Chelsea bar - that must be the 'Chelsea Reach' as I remember it ??

Yes, that's it. :)

Possibly! It was Chelsea something anyway.
Many thanks for your comments btw!
scouserdave 12-19-2006, 12:03 AM Wallasey's pics are fantastic, aren't they Kev? Love yours too:unibrow:

T'anks Dave! Kev's was great for Stanlow and Frodders (places which are slightly innaccessible for me!) Should go down the Otterspool one day, haven't been properly for ages!
Greeeet pics :PDT_Piratz_26:
Ross08 12-21-2006, 05:38 AM Some really good photos there.
The Chelsea was previously know as the Chelsea Reach and my Nan once told me it used to be the Late Night Extra. Though I don't know whether that's right.
Bobby's Bar used to be the Golden Guinea.
But that would also need a whole thread of its own if we were gonna talk about 'Old New Brighton'.
I'm always looking for info. and photos of the open air pool if anyone can help me - but that, I suspect is a bit more difficult than some.
Does anyone remember the concert at New Brighton Baths in 1984? Frankie Goes To Hollywood performed at it.
PhilipG 12-24-2006, 12:40 AM I'm always looking for info. and photos of the open air pool if anyone can help me - but that, I suspect is a bit more difficult than some.
It opened in 1934.
It was claimed to be the largest open-air pool in the world.
Demolished in 1990.
2 early postcards and 3 photos from May 1990.
wallasey 12-24-2006, 12:46 AM It opened in 1934...Demolished in 1990.
Apparently because of a freak storm which damaged the pool beyond repair. This was the 'visitors' pool; the 'residents' pool was the Derby baths which was along Harrison Drive. This also went at some point in time but there is a pub near to the site named the "Derby Pool" which is on Bayview Road.
Great Archive images Phil!

Seacombe Promenade, Wallasey These houses sit on a elevated position overlooking the Mersey and the Docks/ They are also likely to have some great views over the city and the Lancashire Plains to Winter Hill above Bolton too!
http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/9379/20070111013up7.jpg
Seacombe Promenade, Wallasey A slightly grainy view (apologies) showing the developing skyline from the Seacombe Prom near to Wallasey Town Hall

Seacombe Promenade, Wallasey Wallasey Town Hall taken from the prom. That bloke kept running up and down those steps; must have been trying to loose those turkey pounds still. I wouldn't like to do it!
http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/8472/20070111017ou5.jpg
Guinea Gap, Wallasey A final look over to Liverpool from the Town Hall more or less, this is possibly one of the finer views across to the city you will find as you can see the massive developments like the Beetham West Tower in more detail than you would if you went down to Woodside.
Jericho 02-02-2007, 06:55 PM The Wallasey shots are a bit sad. The area around the Town Hall is very run down and depressing. You'd think that with such great views of the city across the water this area should be on the up.
ChrisGeorge 02-02-2007, 07:39 PM Great photographs, Wallasey! Wonderful to see. :handclap:
I trust it is meant to be "Guinea Gap, Wallasey" as in the name of the old baths (are they still there?) not "Guinia Gap, Wallasey" as you spelled it -- I changed to how I thought it should be but will revert it back if I was wrong.

Thanks for that; what a dumb moment was that! I actually tried guessing the name as I didn't have Livelocal handy (it's what I use when getting the road names back up).
The baths are still there yes; Never been but they are there. As is the Primary school opposite.
This part of Wallasey is a little run down but to be honest, it is a little cut off from the rest of the town. Seacombe Ferry isn't the centre of the transport network anymore; that was all moved to Liscard. infact only 4 buses serve Secombe ferry now and 2 of them come up Brighton Street.
Sorry that posting was little short, will get some more made up for you! I am currently writing an update for Flickr (Tuebrook will soon get 45 more images!)

Looking forward to seeing those pics of Tuebrook though.
PhilipG 02-02-2007, 11:32 PM Lovely photos, Gerard, but it's a sign of the times that there's no people to be seen.
Even on fine days, people drive to New Brighton, & then stay in their cars.
I'm getting old - I lived in New Brighton when the ferry was still operating.

Gerard 02-03-2007, 12:00 PM Thanks Lads,Was a bit Quiet Phil..A Real shame isn't it the way New Brighton has gone,Was never away from there as a kid,There's a great Dvd out "New Brighton,Liverpool and Wirrals Playground"..Brilliant mate..
No doubt you've seen "The Magnet"..Fantastic Ealing movie..
I have'nt been down the promenades for..erm 20 years.. but does anyone remember the little cannon that used to be connected to the iron railings and seawall ?
Sheesh I'm gettin ald :D
Jericho 02-03-2007, 04:17 PM New Brighton can still be full(ish) of life in the summer or on a hot weekend any other time of the year in the age of global warming. Most of the activity occurs along Marine Promenade. Even the beach sees a bit of action when the weather's good. I'm hoping New Brighton's resting and not terminally ill, or worse still, dead. It looks great from Crosby Beach. Someone ought to launch a small ferry service between Waterloo/Crosby and New Brighton.
wallasey 02-03-2007, 08:01 PM I can second the fact that New Brighton can get pretty busy during the summer or infact on any sunny day!
The thing is, apart from the "Bright Spot" and the Bowling Alley (now rebuilt with a laser-quest), there really isn't anything much to do. Even the pubs are starting to close!
New Brighton is only in the state that it is now due to the council and local's protesting over any new plans that would surely be good for what is now a glorified suburb of Wallasey.

snappel 02-14-2007, 09:30 AM Nah, HDR's ****... ;)
Good stuff Dave. I think that's the East Float dock. I was there a year ago and I gave the camera to my girlfriend for a minute while I looked at something, and she took an amazing picture of that boat. Similar angle to yours in fact. I was bit miffed, as it was better than any photo I'd taken that day!!
We used to play around down there if out on a bike ride, and we were convinced the steel cables would suddenly snap and lash back. But so far they're still holding. An interesting sight for sure...
wallasey 02-14-2007, 12:37 PM Dave: Great image; the dock is the East Float was you were to the East of Duke Street! Btw, as you were on the north side you were in Wallasey which is good.
Nice image, love the sky looking over to Birkenhead.

Mona Street, Claughton A bit of old Claughton Village which has engulfed by the mass development of Birkenhead during the 1800's. Laird changed the town forever as it was only small fishing village on the banks of Birkenhead Pool (now filled in) close to Woodside. Claughton Village was an agricultural settlement before becomming a part of Birkenhead. I bet the people living in these houses got a shock when everywhere around them suddenly built up in a short space of time.

East Float, Bhd/Wsey Bound The extensive East and West Floats partially divide Birkenhead from Wallasey. However, it is rather common to see the "Dock Road" which is on the Wallasey side referred to as being in Birkenhead for some reason.

wallasey 02-18-2007, 11:10 PM Thanks guys, One place on Wirral where I really must get to is Rock Park in Rock Ferry. It's sort of Birkenhead's answer to Cressington but on a much smaller scale. I don't know when I will get round to there, possibly Friday.

I don't think this too bad a photo. I took this one in the early hours of 1.1.07
I think that is a great photo, it's forced me to get a new password (lost my old one long ago) to log on just to say so. That is the best New Brighton shot I have seen for a long time.

Sorry I didn't post any here first like I normally do but I will make it up to yer seeing as Church Road in Tranmere is set to see it's shopping district cleared to make way for a new commercial development. I will also aim to get round to Derby Road as the side streets running off it are also set for demolition due to the fact that the area is in a HMRI area sadly.

Poulton Road, Somerville, Wallasey I just had to show this to finish off. It was causght this afternoon and shows a great contrast in buildings. The foreground shows whats left of the Edwardian/Victorian suburb of Seacombe/Somerville with the new Beetham West Tower now dominating the suburban scene. If you like your contrasting scenes, this part of Wallasey is a great place to be!
wallasey 06-01-2007, 04:53 PM Hate to bump the thread, but its been over a week so hopefully this is ok.
A few shots from around Bebington/Poulton Lancelyn area...
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/2135/20070503013fr0.jpg
The Village, Bebington The Rose and Crown pub can be seen in the background is one of Bebington's local landmarks as is Mayer Hall which was home to Joseph Mayer who was a prominent Liverpool Businessman. It is unfortunate the drinking fountain in the roundabout is obscured somewhat by street furniture but never mind ay!
http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/1027/20070412004qu8.jpg
The Village, Bebington Looking back into Bebington itself, one a thatched cottage predating all modern developments can be seen off to the left. Bebington was once one of those quaint, rural, Wirral Villages. That was before the Mersey Railway and the Ferry service operating from New Ferry opened up this part of Wirral to suburban development.
http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/7075/20070412005rh7.jpg
The Village, Bebington Some rather elegant townhouses possibly dating back from the early 1800's or earlier can be seen here. It is likely that these were occupied by local merchants or were built to show off the agricultural wealth this area was once renowned for. Now, they make desirable properties to both live and work in.
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/3075/20070412013wf1.jpg
Oaklands Drive, Bebington Away from the village core, Bebington is primarily built up of neat, suburban houses which sit beside tree-lined roads. It was during the 1930's as with most places, when Bebington really started to expand.
http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/7281/20070412056js3.jpg
The Three Stags, Spital The pub you see here sits beside a very busy crossroads which locally bears the same name.
http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/2149/20070412059jg2.jpg
Spital Crossroads, Spital The Three Stags Pub is just off to the right. This is a suprisingly busy junction (not that this image shows it well!) where routes from Bromborough, Bebington and Poulton Lancelyn meet with Brimstage Road which takes you out to the M53 as well as Clatterbridge Hospital.

Poulton Road, Poulton Lancelyn Just below Spital Crossroads is the Poulton Lancelyn estate. This is a rather upmarket suburb of South Wirral which is made all the more desirable by good access to the M53 as well as Raby Mere which is reached by driving a short distance down Poulton Road.
Hopefully this gave some of you an insight into what a possibly unfamiliar part of South Wirral looks like. I will be making a visit to Bromborough at some point in time so thats something for you to look forward to!

The image of those kids in New Brighton was particually interesting as the old ferry landing stage is visable in the background which was nice to see.

Yes, it is quite quirky isn't it? Never come across anything like that before, so was rather chuffed to find such a feature!
Many Thanks
ChrisGeorge 06-12-2007, 01:39 PM Hi Rob
I think those enamel signs were in use around the turn of the twentieth century, so it may have been up there that long at least. Possibly PhilipG might know more about the dates of such street signs.

Can't help really.
I've learned that the oldest street signs in Liverpool have serifs on the letters, but don't know when enamelled ones were used (or even why they were used).
The streets off Lark Lane had blue enamelled street signs - there are only 2 left.
I think I've seen one in Garston, but don't know of any others.

Thanks, Philip, for this information. What also makes me think it is old, apart from the enamel and the rust, is the raised "oh" in "No." which looks to be an old style of presentation.

There were loads of people kite flying on the beach in Talacre a couple of weeks ago, maybe they were practising for this festival.

ChrisGeorge 07-06-2007, 02:43 PM Hi kebabman
Great pictures once again. My aunt and uncle used to live on Rake Lane so when I am on Merseyside next I will look you up at the Big Chef if I may (you may realise I am in the U.S. and was just on Merseyside in May). You might want to post the photos of the couple of war memorials you have photographed on the [Go and take a picture of] anything to do with War (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4540) thread. I very much like the photo of the Boer War memorial in Central Park, Liscard, with Britannia on it. Most interesting.

Darn it!!!! There it is!!! Thank you very much for posting this particular photograph, kebabman. I bought a postcard a few months ago on ebay that shows this church. The postcard seller though was not sure if the view was of "Egremont" in the Lake District but since the postmark from 1900-1910 says "Liscard" I was pretty sure it had to be Wallasey. Thank you so much for confirming that I was correct! :)

kebabman 07-07-2007, 04:51 AM Well Chris ,
I better take another picture of this church than...A better picture...Under right time of sun, shade with better lens etc..
It is no trouble to me because this church is only 30 seconds away from my house by walk..
It is a great building, excellent landmark...I reckon the setreet I live on is named after this church...
To me this church is part of Central Park even wall has been built all around to seperate...
Bad news is this church is not serving public almost more than 2 years now ..Empty..Locked doors..No service at all..It is shame really...About 4 years ago when my Armanian friends came to visit me from Istanbul they attended this church for Christmas carol..Whenever we talk on the phone they do ask about this Church..I am not a good lier so telling them truth and they are getting upset .
Unless it get protected properly today youths will destroy this building as well..:disgust:
By the way thanks for all nice comments about photos..If anyone want to use it more than welcome...If anyone need original size pls do not hesitate to ask.

It's sad this St John's church has had to close down. Clearly the local people stopped attending. No doubt in time they'll realise what an asset they have lost. The church was built for his clergyman son by Sir John Tobin who lived in the big house in what is now Central Park. Sir John is buried in the church's graveyard. The family made their initial wealth out of the slave trade.
PhilipG 07-18-2007, 10:34 AM Just one of the very desirable houses in Wellington Road that overlook the Irish Sea.
The ground is so steep that the ground floor at the front is the first floor at the back!
At the turn of the 20th century this house was owned by James Kiernan, a Liverpool theatre owner.
Among his theatres were the Park Palace in Mill Street, the Paddington Palace and the Tivoli Palace in Lime Street (later the Palais de Luxe).
He also built the Irving Theatre in Seacombe.
I had a flat in this house in the 1970s.

miguel 08-01-2007, 11:37 PM Wonderful and well taken. It's a bit late so haven't been through them all. I think two of the best places to take pictures from are from the top of Argyle Street South from which location that awesome iconic picture of the Ark Royal being built at Cammel Lairds was taken in the 1930s.
The other is from the Egremont Hotel at Egremont, especially at night. I am very well travelled and though never complacent have seen some beautiful views.
But stepping from that pub on a summer's night, when the Mersey was like a mirror, the reflections of the Liverpool lights, and of course the Pier Head ............. it took the breath away.
Oh, one other ideal spot. From the top of Thornton Road in Bebington. A beautiful suburban tree lined avenue and perfectly framed at the end of it, Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. I cannot believe we take such beautiful views for granted.

miguel 08-04-2007, 08:02 AM Ssshhhhh I am torn between keeping quiet and extolling the loveliness of Seacombe, Egremont, Wallasey and New Brighton promenades.
Perfect as it is: do we really want tens of thousands getting in the way of the views :)
I often ask Liverpudlians if they have been over there. The usual reply, not since I was a kid. Here we have on our doorstep an asset the rest of the country would give its right arm for yet it is unheralded. Amazing oversight. Great photos. Thanks.

miguel 08-07-2007, 09:39 AM Very nice too. I can see I am going to have to learn how to post piccies on here. I was in New Brighton Sunday evening as the sunset. With the lighthouse as a backdrop there was opportunity for some stunning natural photography.
Not sure about those ****ed windmills out there though. Will we ever come to like them as we like the Dutch windmills I wonder?

This is a very long story drone pilot..I do trade at king St as well as Rake lane..
The Wirral Borough Councel has spent good amount of money for project of King St...
Public meetings held many times...After all that project company came with 4 different options....At 3 of this option my shop was becaming green area..:):):) Shops were building all together as a trade center or I suppose as a shopping center and they were suppose to be giving me a unit as well...
Both sides of King St was getting knocked down,as well as great portion of Rice Lane as well..
After all projects has publised and been asked opinion of residents but result has never been published..
As far as I know councel is searching for finance but size of a project like this would be expensive and return would be very slow so that it would be very difficult to find a finance...
IMO this project will never turn into reality.
drone_pilot 10-04-2007, 01:14 PM thanks for the info, kebabman, typical of the people in charge, promise the earth then deliver zilch.
ChrisGeorge 10-04-2007, 02:24 PM Excellent work once again, Kebabman. Congratulations on getting your photos on the calendar. :handclap:

wallasey 10-05-2007, 11:07 PM Loving everyones images at the moment! Very high quality indeed! The images from around New Brighton and Egremont were great! Thinking about King Street, as far as I am aware, there are plans to pull down the derelict building on the corner of St Brides Road to make way for flats as well as the demolition of Royston and Woodhall Aves. Wirral Council and "regeneration" are a mood point with me, especially where Tranmere's Church Road is concerned!
Apologies for not being around recently, computers aren't my best friends at the moment!
I went walkies last week around Bromborough, a few interesting discoveries...
http://img264.imageshack.us/img264/1817/20070924037qw1.jpg
http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/8625/20070924039tt8.jpg
Thermal Road, Bromborough This was a rather interesting find! Now I dont know about you guys but I never knew there was a "Merseyside Powerplant" especially such a building down in Bromborough. I am loving the art deco gates and is something which I hope will be preserved if and when this now cleared land is re-developed. Depending on which direction the wind blows, this area normally has the smell of Cheerio's clinging to everything as the factory is immediately opposite to where I was standing.
http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/4830/20070924044sv1.jpg
South View, Bromborough This is the newest part of "Prices Village" which was first laid out during the mid 1800's making the village the second oldest Purpose Built Industrial Village in the world. These houses were built in 1909. The area was created by Prices Patent Candle company who re-located from London in order to maximise production and gain entry to the Atlantic Markets.
http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/5854/20070924046rs9.jpg
The Green, Bromborough At some point, the company also built a school as well as a church and a village hall. Sadly, Port Cities (http://www.mersey-gateway.org/server.php?show=ConNarrative.93&chapterId=556) (who I am using as a reference) don't have a date as to when Pool Primary was built. I like the sandstone blocks which have been used to construct the building, it rather stuck out as practically all other buildings were build out of brick. Wirral Council have tried to close this school to which nothing ever materialised. I did notice, however, Dell Primary in New Ferry has now gone. Oh dear!
http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/474/20070924064th0.jpg
Manor Place, Bromborough These were built in 1856 and have a rather London-esque feel about them what with the brown brick. Something which I only just noticed, don't these houses have rather large chimneys?
Moving up the Wirral into Rock Ferry, I now wish to do a small Then and Now series using some images from my Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/liverpoolsuburbia/sets/72157594567914631/with/409224390/) Account...

Railway Road. Feb 2007 The old Cast Iron nameplate stands in situ whilst its old neighborhood awaits to be wiped from the map.
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/1203/20070924083ej2.jpg
Railway Road, Oct 2007 Cleared land now lies where the terrace above used to be, what ever became of the nameplate I wonder?
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/162/409224390_17d8133cb0_o.jpg
Medway Road, Feb 2007 Some rather respectable terraced houses stand derelict in this scene. As far as housing goes, these didn't look all that bad on the outside however, we don't know what the conditions were like inside. I like the brickwork on these with the yellow and orange ribboning running around the doors and windows as well as the area between each one. It is a shame one of the properties was pebble- dashed as it does spoil the streetscene in my view.
http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/1499/20070924092bh1.jpg
Medway Road, Oct 2007 No need to worry about pebble-dashed houses here as practically the whole street has been cleared.
I think this will do! been rather busy behind the scenes!
I have noticed the lack of updates regarding my Flickr account recently, I will endevour to pick this up again!
chippie 10-05-2007, 11:36 PM Hi Wallasey welcome back, haven,t seen you for awhile. Smashing photos just a shame about those houses being pulled down. Reminds me of the 70s when our district came down in Everton.:034:
wallasey 10-06-2007, 04:07 PM Why thank you Chippy! My internet and comp have been up the duff recently so its all been a bit disruptive!
It is very sad to see this area of Wirral disappear, one hopes that what replaces them wont themselves have to be replaced in 20 or 30 years time.
chippie 10-07-2007, 04:23 PM I,d like to think that too mate but time and time again, throughout Britain not just Merseyside, I,ve seen such paltry buildings replacing what had been around for over a hundred years.
Even some of the new stuff that is being built in Liverpool city centre by the Duck of Westminster doesn,t look like it will see my life out and I,m well on the way.
Nobody nowadays seems to build to last anymore just to get over the present crisis and leave the future crisis, to the future people. I particulary refer to the rubbish schools and hospitals and libraries that I have seen over the last fifteen years in my travels. They appear to be sheds or hangers that as soon as the rain starts will get rustier and rustier by the day.
I feel sorry for the kids growing up today because they will have to foot the bill again for the rubbish that we are paying for today.
R.I.P Britain I see you dying a slow and painful death.

As it happens, it's Tranmere Old Hall in Birkenhead, so I don't know if the date can be relied upon, but it does look like Herdman's work.
I'll leave it to Wallasey to make some notes about the building, because I hadn't heard of it, until I saw a picture in a book, and recognised the building in my print.

TonyS 10-12-2007, 02:21 PM Hi,
The above print was published in volume 2 of Herdman's Pictorial Relics of Ancient Liverpool in 1878. This is Herdman's description of the plate.
Tranmere Old Hall, Birkenhead
This view is from a drawing by the author, made in 1850. The date of its erection is supposed to be 1614. Although it is one of the oldest buildings in the vicinity, the place has no historical association to render description necessary. It is, however, interesting as having been the residence of a local celebrity, from whose name that of Tranmere is derived. Joseph Mayer, Esq., in a paper read before the Historic Society in 1851, tells us that his researches to find some account of this Old Hall have not been very success |
