THE magical and gritty sides of Liverpool are being featured on the big screen across Britain this Christmas.
A new independent film, Fated, will be released in cinemas in the run-up to the festive season.
The film, starring Craig Charles, Michael Angelis and Kate Robbins, is set in the ruins of Liverpool’s atmospheric St Luke’s church at the end of Bold Street and the night-time streets on New Year’s Eve.
It is billed as a magical fantasy adventure about love, heartache and miracles.
Playwright Alan Bleasdale, who has seen a preview, said: “ I’ve never seen Liverpool looking so beautiful.”
Writer and director Nicola Scott hand-picked the cast and wrote the parts specifically for them.
She said: “The atmosphere of the bombed-out church is mystical and enchanting.
"We were often shooting in the middle of the night in the freezing cold, and a lot of strange things happened, that no one could rationally explain.
"I knew for the fairytale aspect of the story to work it would need to be juxtaposed by a gritty real-life quality.
“I wanted the characters to be larger than life but real and believable too.
"I knew Michael, Craig and Kate could make anything believable, and knew how to bring much needed warmth and humour while still being dramatic.”
Craig Charles, who plays Pedro, said: "When I read the script I was really impressed.
“My scenes were mainly shot in and around Chinatown. The people there were truly fantastic, what with the crispy duck and all the laughing we did, it felt good to be back home."
Michael Angelis, who plays tramp Tatty, said: "My character was challenging and uplifting.
“I play the part of an arty type university lecturer who eventually, through devastating emotive circumstances, hits the streets, living the life of a tramp.”
“This film has all the possibilities of being a cult hit.
“It was great to see Liverpool on the up. The energy and positiveness of the people I met was truly fantastic."
Fated, produced by Merseyside company Ace Film and with a 15 rating, will be shown in key cities across the country after a premiere at Fact on Friday, December 8.
