one childhood memory of mine is cleggs the timber yard i think it was back russell street, we kids used to bundle
firewood and pack them into tea chests, not sure how much we used to get paid, maybe somebody remembers it
more clearly than me and would like to tell more about those days.

I lived in Sherdley Street just off Crown Street in the 1960s. Just a short stroll from Brownlow Hill and Paddington. I remember the houses being demolished and the university buildings replacing them, and the steady rise of the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Am I mixed up? ... the left is Brownlow Hill with the Liverpool University clock tower in the distance.

Mount Pleasant is to the right...

The clock tower still looks the same...:)

That was Chapel Lane with Harford Street running across it at the far end. The five black garages are on Rock Street.

hi ged, great photo of russell street flats just before demolition in 1990's.
i lived on the opposite side, right next door to the pub on the corner of brownlow hill/russell st [the grapes] or the family who ran it[strickland].
would be fantastic to see an old photo of this house and pub if one still exists, maybe someone with photos of this side will get in touch with this website.

From another thread... The upper end of Brownlow Hill is shown in the early 60's aerial shot I took... Note that the second Cathedral is still under construction.

Right between the wheels of the aeroplane (Chipmunk?) on the right is my old school, Harrison Jones. The houses which stood in Little Woolton Street and Sherdley Street have been demolished. We moved out of Sherdley Street in 1964 so I would think the photo would be around 1965. Someone with a bit of knowlege about the Metropolitan Cathedram might be able to date it more acurately. Great photograph mate!

I think it was late 65 or early 66.... I didn't start at Liverpool University until mid-65, so it was definitely after that...:)

Since I wasn't 17 1/2 I couldn't join the University Air Squadron. After this picture was published as a 1/2 page in the Echo, I got into trouble for not clearing it with the RAF, so my RAF career was over before it started...:)

I still enjoy flying, and could actually afford it after I moved to the US. This is mine.

Thanks mate. I remember the houses being demolished for the university buildings. My mam used to say "You might go to the university one day!" No chance, but at least my son and daughter are there!
In the photograph, I can make out St Judes church, the convent of Sacred Heart, the Lybro, the transport firm on Little Woolton Street whose name I have forgotten, Minshull Street wash house and baths and the row of shops at the bottom of Paddington. Some memories there my friend! Thanks.

That's a nice plane! I'm no expert, but is it a Cessna?

No, it's a 1977 Grumman Tiger. Four seat, 180 HP, about 150 mph.

My son has to give a presentation about Brownlow Hill. Last week he gave one about Victoria Street. Just looking at the 1909 Street Directory, it looks as if it was once a thriving area for small businesses such as grocers, bakers, jewellers, tailors and several pubs.

I was born in 38 Crown St in 1945,and did attend Harrison Jones school. In 1959 I was proud to be Head Girl. My family had lived around the Adelphi Hotel, and my Mother did remember it being built. A few of the street names near school are West Derby Street, Wide Street, Sun Street and, Moon Street are just a few I can think of.
