They played the DVD of the 1984 series involving Andrew Schofield as a footie loving schoolboy on on the coach to Arsenal today. There wasnt enough time to finish them all, last one I saw was when he found his mum was having it away with the school caretaker. Can anyone answer the question then - was his trial for LFC successful and did Scully get to fulfil his dream of playing for them.

LIVERPOOL FC: WHEN SCULLY WAS KING OF THE KOP

To celebrate the DVD release of cult 80s sitcom 'Scully', Liverpoolfc.tv catch up with star of the show – local actor and Reds fan Drew Schofield. Sit back, relax and allow yourself to dream for a minute. It's derby day at Anfield and you're leading the Reds out onto the hallowed turf.

A capacity crowd go wild with delight as you emerge from the tunnel. You run towards a heaving Spion Kop, kick a fly-away ball into the famous old terrace and the Kopites respond by chanting your name.

For your average Liverpudlian, life couldn't get much better.

Unfortunately, it's at this point that we are normally woken from our slumber and forced to face up to the harsh reality that this is a fantasy which is unlikely to ever see the light of day.

Unless you're Drew Schofield that is, because the esteemed Kirkby-born actor can look back and say he did exactly that, and more, as part of his lead role in the hit tv show that has now been brought back to life on a double-disc DVD.

Playing a starry-eyed teenager with aspirations of becoming the new Kenny Dalglish, Drew got to mix with the Liverpool stars of this time, train with them at Melwood and lead the team out at Anfield for the derby clash with Everton in November 1983.

"Scully was a great character to play," says Drew. "He aspired to play for Liverpool and kept seeing Kenny Dalglish everywhere he went. We had some brilliant scenes together, including one where he was dressed as the fairy godmother!

"I also got to lead the team out in front of the Kop and that was an amazing experience. All of a sudden the crowd just started singing 'There's only one Franny Scully,' it couldn't have been scripted better. People thought it was planned but I can honestly tell you it wasn't."

Written by fellow Liverpudlian and award winning playwright Alan Bleasdale, 'Scully' is a humorous portrayal of working class life in Liverpool during the early eighties and features cameo roles by a number of former Reds, including manager Bob Paisley.

Originally broadcast on Channel Four during the summer of 1984, it's a 'must-see' for any Reds fan.

"If you haven't seen it, you have to see it," adds Drew. "With the footage of all those great players and the old standing Kop swaying, it's a piece of social history now."
