FA will look into Newell outburst

Luton manager Mike Newell could be in trouble with the Football Association after launching a scathing attack on women officials.
Newell was furious that assistant referee Amy Rayner failed to award his side a penalty in the 3-2 loss to QPR.

He said: "She shouldn't be here. I know that sounds sexist but I am sexist. This is not park football, so what are women doing here?"

The FA has confirmed it will be examining Newell's remarks.

A spokesman said: "All we can say at the moment is that we will be investigating when we have discovered what was said."

Newell was incensed that Rayner and referee Andy D'Urso failed to award his side a spot-kick when QPR defender Marcus Bignot tangled with Carlos Edwards in the penalty box.

"It is tokenism - for the politically-correct idiots," said Newell.

"We have a problem in this country with political correctness and bringing women into the game is not the way to improve refereeing and officialdom.

"It is absolutely beyond belief. When do we reach a stage when all officials are women because then we are in trouble?

"It is bad enough with the incapable referees and linesmen we have but if you start bringing in women, you have big problems."

But Bignot, who used to manage a women's football team in Birmingham, was astounded by Newell's remarks.

He said: "Comments like those will stop female officials from trying to make their way in the game.

"Amy Rayner is a role model and full credit goes to her. What would he have said if it had been a male assistant referee making that decision?

"It's easy to blame officials and Mike Newell is entitled to his opinion but remarks like that do not help the game."

The other week I saw one of the funniest footballing incidents ever involving a woman referee, she was refereeing this match in Brasil it was a cup game and the away team were leading 2-1.The game was nearly over when the home team got a corner which was taken and the striker volleyed the ball about at least 15 foot wide of the goal. All the players started to jog back to their positions ready for the game to start, everything's normal up to now here's what happened next. The ballboy dribbled the ball just onto the pitch and hit it in the net,the goalkeeper picked the ball out of the net and went to take a goalkick, seeing the goalie take the ball from the net the ref came running up to him and took the ball off him and ran towards the half way line signalling a goal. All hell broke loose but the goal stood because the referee's decision is final, the game finished 2-2 it was unbelievable did anyone else see this?

The other week I saw one of the funniest footballing incidents ever involving a woman referee:First let me establish my credentials; I played the game competatively, man and boy, until the age of 48. I coached childrens teams in North America's largest inter-city minor league, Halton & Peel Interdistrict Soccer League, and administered that organisation as it's president for seven years. Was one of the originals who started the minor soccer association in Brampton, Ontario, became it's second president and presided for almost ten years. I was also a fully qualified professional referee, held a FIFA coaching certificate and have sat on a number of disciplinary committees overseeing players, officials and administrators. So I think I do know a little about the game.

In my opinion, I have yet to see any referee, male or female, as bad as a lot of the present crop who officiate at Premiership level. There are three in particular who should not even officiate a Subuteo game, they are Graham Poll, Mike Riley and Uriah Rennie. Whenever I see any of their names attached to a game I know that they will be the centre of attraction in that game. Two in particular, Poll and Rennie are two of the most incompetant I have ever watched. At least I hope they are incompetent, the alternative would be that they are corrupt. As for Mike Riley, he shouldn't even be allowed in a stadium as a spectator if Manchester United is playing. I have never seen a more blatant bias for one team as this man displays every time he officiates a Manchester United game, and it doesn't matter who the oposition is. But that's just IMHO.:)

Doesnt surprise me that, Rennie has always struck me as the only ref who thinks people go to the game solely to see him officiate. He got demoted a few seasons back and had to slum it at Marine in a pre season friendly.

BTW, where do these lineswomen change? Every ground tour I've done the match officials all share facilities.

Yeah, saw this a few weeks back! Incredibly funny.

The funniest moment was seeing the ball boy take 2 yards back when 6 members of the opposing team went running over to him.

Having done more research think there was even more of an out-cry as this game actually had some major relevance to league standings towards the end of the season!

As for Amy, we've (Stevenage) had her as a ref for a few games (she refs in the conference, linos in the league), and her 1st game in charge was actually very good. It has gone downhill somewhat since then, although its been a while since I've seen her referee.

I do have to say though that Mike Newell is completely out of order. Another point to make, is that if one of us had made that kind of statement in our workplace, surely we'd be getting a severe ticking off, if not some kind of disciplanary action or worse...

And to those whose criticise referees - have you ever taken control of a match? If not, I suggest you try it...!

Slightly OT and it's a golden oldie.
Have you seen the video of the campest referee ever? Sadly, this poor Brazilian guy is dead now.

Did you notice how empty the stadium was. A couple of years ago my wife and I attended a Derby Game, between Flamingo and Rio, in Maracana. The stadium had less than 40,000 spectators. Maracan hold 200,000. About ten years ago I watched Spartak Moscow-v-SKA Leningrad which had a crowd of almost 80,000. I think the capacity of the Spartak stadium (forget it's name) is very close to 80,000. Soccer crazy Brazil, who sez so?

Don't know a team caled Rio and possibly you mean the team called Flamengo? (English: "A native of Flanders", btw). Sorry for my trainspotting fascination about Brazilian footy and apologies if I've messed up.

BTW,
I've recalled this story a few times when my future missus told me her name was Julieta Albano Santos. I was so impressed and said "Pele played for Santos!" Her repy was "Who is Pele?":disgust:

Don't know a team caled Rio and possibly you mean the team called Flamengo? Yes, your right, it was 'Flamengo'. I think they played in red and black stripes, like Milano, against 'Vasco' who played in white with a black sash. (English: "A native of Flanders", btw).I didn't know that, not fala Portuguese and all that, interesting non the less.;)

Someone mentioned the other day that their wife understood the 'offside' rule in soccer. So does my wife, who I overheard explaining to a Canadian mother whose son was playing soccer that, "Offside" in soccer is like a moveable blue line in hockey. Quite a good description I thought.

PS: I can see this heading in the usual direction. I'm now reverting to my recent stance. Taraa!

Rennie comments prompt PNE probe

The Football Association have confirmed they will contact Preston regarding their stadium announcer's comments about referee Uriah Rennie.

It has been claimed that announcer Adam Catterall said "welcome to the second half of the Uriah Rennie show" as the sides returned to the pitch after half-time in last Saturday's goalless draw with Crystal Palace at Deepdale.

It is unclear what action the FA could take but a spokesman said: "We are aware of the situation and we will be contacting Preston for more information on what happened."

Preston have so far refused to comment on the incident.

He is a prime example of a bad referee so I think a woman ref couldn't be any worse than him,his ego is out of control.:disgust:
