View Full Version : Liverpool Art Cafe
scouserdave 11-07-2006, 08:59 AM Well worth a visit just to check out Tom Murphy's sculptures. A full English brekky is only £3.95
too! No la de da Lark Lane pretentiousness either. Most of the customers just come in for a bite to eat and haven't a clue who Tom Murphy
is:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
Paul, you're only 5 mins drive away. Pop in for breakfast:PDT_Piratz_26:

So where is this place where I can get a full
English Breakfast for that price?:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
ChrisGeorge 11-07-2006, 10:29 AM Neat stuff, Dave! Is that the model for the Beatles sculpture at Cavern Walks? Did Tom Murphy do that sculpture? Where exactly is
the Liverpool Art Café?

I think the address is 683 West Derby Road, but just look out for the Newsham Park bizzie shop. It's just across the
road from there.

Not sure about that one Chris. I'm
meeting up with him tomorrow. I'll ask him. He done the Billy Fury monument, by the way.

Thanks. I appreciate that. I'm squinting at those newscuttings on
the wall and it looks like he met Yoko Ono. At any rate, he does good stuff.
Chris
I'd only go there for the English Brekkie, but that price sounds worth it.:PDT_Piratz_26:

Tuebrook. :)
scouserdave 11-08-2006, 10:20 AM Tuebrook. :)
LOL! You know the bridge going across the road? I thought it was part of the derailed Liverpool -
Southport route. I gained access by climbing over the wall where the old bowling green used to be in Newsham Park. Took a few snaps and was about to go back
when a friggin' train hurtled past, beeping it's horn! (Almost) Shiit myself!
lindylou 11-08-2006, 12:36 PM I
know where you mean. The green behind the old Newsham hospital ? There is a little tunnel there too. Havn't looked there for a long time so it could be
bricked up now.
Do you remember the little Tatoo shop that was just under the bridge ( on the main road) ? It was there for years.

Yeah I know that tunnel, it's in between (what
was) the Seaman's Orphange and the bowling green. Don't know now, but there were garden allotments on the other side. Don't recall the tatoo shop.
Motorhemp 11-08-2006, 01:03 PM Was the tatto shop called Pete's
Tattoos?

I'm a big admirer of Tom Murphy's work he's a legend I'll definitely be dropping in there thanks Dave.:)
shytalk 11-08-2006, 03:35 PM The tunnel was still open last year when I walked through the park. I used to use it every day when I lived in Sutton St. to take my dog to the park.:037:
scouserdave 11-08-2006, 03:38 PM Any pics of that ?
I'll have a look around on my hard drive. Mark (Bunnyman) may still have a copy of a pic I sent to him over a year ago.
lindylou 11-08-2006, 09:56 PM The Seamans orphanage. It was a hospital or clinic of some kind in later years wasn't it?
Actually I shouldn't have called it Newsham hospital 'cos the real Newsham hospital was on Belmont rd and backed onto Lower Breck rd - the paramedic ambulance depot is still there.
The clinic by Tuebrook was called Park hospital I think.
The tatoo parlour was a tiny shop ( more like a little hut) right by the bridge and was well known. I might have a picture of it somewhere.
lindylou 11-08-2006, 10:01 PM Other places in Tuebrook you might remember are; St John's youth club (we had some great nights there - great music and sometimes live bands),
St Cecilia's club, the Binmens' club on Green lane, The Coconut Grove night club. :)

did anyone ever find any pics?
Went to the Cafe on Friday morning - superb breakfast, and the art work was great.
Also the owner was very friendly, and I pointed her in the direction of this web site for my source of reason to visit!
Can recommend it! :PDT_Piratz_26:
scouserdave 11-12-2006, 10:00 PM did anyone ever find any pics?
Yep, here's one I found looking up West Derby Rd (westbound). The Newsham Park police station is just out of sight to the left and the cafe would have been on the right side. Pic taken in April 2003.

Thanks for this information, Simon. A visit to the Liverpool Art Café sounds like a must for my upcoming visit to Liverpool next May. The locale is also of interest to me because my father worked at Newsham Park Hospital in the early 1950's before we emigrated to the United States.

Sounds great Chris, how long are you over for?
ChrisGeorge 11-15-2006, 02:44 AM Hi Simon
We would be over for about ten days to two weeks, spending some time in the south, then coming up to Liverpool for a week or so, then back down south before flying off. I'm coming for the Maybrick event at the Liverpool Cricket Club and to take part in a couple of poetry readings at the Everyman and at Albert Dock in connection with a Liverpool poetry anthology, Living on Hope Street that includes a selection of my poems.
Chris
scouserdave 11-15-2006, 02:53 AM Proceed with caution Simon (shudder!)

Hiya Christy and welcome. Are the allotments still there, on the other side of the little tunnel? Do you live nearby?

Hi Christy. Glad someone remembers the Tatto shop. :)
I found this photo somewhere on the web - can't think where I got it from - but I had it saved in my documents. The little kiosk just under the bridge was where the tattoo shop was. Can you recall when it closed ? I think it may have been in the 1980s maybe.
christy 11-16-2006, 01:11 PM I reckon it was about 93 that Jack's tattoo kiosk shut cos I remember my mate getting his arm done there. I think Jacks moved onto the block where the art cafe is above a sweet shop or an outdoor.
Yes, the allotments are still under the tunnel. I pass them a lot as I train in the park quite a bit and I only live in the swan.
catherinemurphy 11-19-2006, 08:31 PM Hi.
A visitor to The Liverpool Art Café told me about this great site. Thanks for all the interest and support in our new venture.
Thought I should tell you about an exhibition we are holding next week. Walton artist Carl V Fletcher is showing works that reflect his current interest in space.
Carl is a specialist decorative painter and examples of his work can be seen at The Trafford Centre and in clubs and pubs throughout Liverpool.
The Liverpool Art Café charges local artists just 10 per cent commission. Other galleries charge up to 50 per cent.
We welcome everyone to our café/gallery and promise freshly cooked food, a friendly atmosphere and plenty of interesting art.
Call 0151 263 9463 or 07788666837/07713642540 for information.

Hi MissInformed
It is going to be the weekend of 19th/20th May, 2007. Check the thread on the event at Casebook: Jack the Ripper (http://forum.casebook.org/showthread.php?t=1328), particularly the most recent posts because organizer Chris Jones has just dropped the price for the weekend from £43 to £38 and arranged a number of add-on activities such as a tour of the Maybrick mansion and a trip to Anfield Cemetery to see James Maybrick's grave. You can email Mr Jones at c.jones@gateacre.liverpool.sch.uk

Hiya Cath,
your breakfasts are fantastic. I'll be there everytime I visit Liverpool. I see you already have a bunch of regulars, which is good going considering you've been open for such a short time.
BTW, I can see your house from here!:)
