Post your Liverpool postboxes here. Sounds a bit trainspotterish, but I'm fascinated with them. You can guess

their age by the ubiquitous "ER" and "GR" insignias on the front of them.

My first pic is the oldest postbox in Liverpool. It used to be located on

Sheil Rd, but can now be found in the grounds of the Royal Mail building near Limey. The second one is a Victorian postbox in Wood

St.

Don't know if it's still there but

there was a Victorian one in Arundel Avenue, near Sydenham Avenue.

The country's only octagonal post box was at the corner of Mill St and Northumberland St. It was there until the 1970s and taken away as it

was so unique. I saw a photo of it on the net somewhere.

There's an old one on the Liverpool University campus, opposite the Sydney Jones library in Chatham Street. I've heard it's the oldest in Liverpool.

First, good work, Dave, once more!

There are other multisided Victorian postboxes around elsewhere. Do they have eight sides as well?

I've heard 3 or 4 different places where the oldest postbox is meant to be.
Scouserdave says Sheil rd. Ayjaykay says Chatham.

I was always told that the oldest was originally sited in Everton, can't remember which rd - somewhere like Everton Brow or Netherfield.
Anyway, somewhere near by.

Can anyone clear this up ?

Will the real oldest postbox please stand up !! :Colorz_Grey_PDT_16:

It depends on whether you mean the oldest one still in its original position or not.
Besides, they don't have dates on them so it would be hard to tell.

I'm convinced (but not looked in ages) that there is still one in the wall on Woolton Road, Childwall. This was the boundary wall to Childwall C of E School (my primary school) and it was positioned in the wall. Now it's someone's back garden so it wouldn't take much to get a blow torch and cut the back open :)

I've seen an old one at the Albert Dock, near the wacker qwackers.

The text on scouserdave's pillar-box is:

LIVERPOOL "SPECIAL" PILLAR BOX

THIS IS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL LIVERPOOL "SPECIAL"
POSTING BOXES - CAST IN 1863 BY MESSRS
COCHRANE AND COMPANY OF DUDLEY. THE UNIQUE
DESIGN WAS AUTHORISED AND INTRODUCED TO
MEET HEAVY AND SPECIAL POSTING REQUIREMENTS
FOUND IN CERTAIN PARTS OF THIS CITY. IT DIFFERED
FROM THE STANDARD BY THE INCLUSION OF THE
LETTERING "POST OFFICE" BELOW THE POSTING
APERTURE AND A LARGE CROWN ON THE ROOF.
A MAIL BAG COULD ALSO BE HUNG INSIDE.

AFTER 115 YEARS OF CONTINUOUS USE IN THE
EVERTON DISTRICT, THIS POSTING BOX WAS WITHDRAWN
FROM SERVICE IN SEPTEMBER 1978 AND PRESERVED AS A
FINE EXAMPLE OF EARLY VICTORIAN STREET FURNITURE.

The one I mentioned in Chatham Street was listed in 1975 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listed_buildings_in_Liverpool), along with the one in Sheil Road.

This QE2 wall post-box is at the Southern end of Allerton rd. Not in use, but probably left in place as it is built into the sandstone wall. It's the only black QE2 post-box I've found (it's obviously been painted red underneath).
Now for the ultimate challenge...who knows the location of any BLUE postal-boxes. I've only ever seen 2. One was around West Derby (unsure of exact location in the mid-90's). The other was outside the old post office in Tarbock (early 1980's). At the time I thought it was blue because I was in another Council area, but a quick Google search states that they were used for Airmail for a brief period in the 1930's only.

There was a piece today on BBC TV North West about a group who photograph post-boxes (they interviewed a member from Formby) A quick Google search revealed The Letter Box Study Group. He stated that they try to log the locations of all pillar-boxes. This site has several variations that I've never seen before.

THEY are among the nation’s most treasured icons and a cherished feature of the British street scene.

Now the Royal Mail’s distinctive red letter boxes have emerged as the subject of one man’s passion.

Bill Owens has dedicated his retirement to taking hundreds of photographs of pillar, wall and post-mounted letter boxes in an effort to help preserve them for future generations. more (http://icliverpool.icnetwork.co.uk/liverpooldailypost/news/regionalnews/tm_headline=a-catalogue-of-british-history%2D-all-boxed-up%26method=full%26objectid=18472868%26siteid=5006 1-name_page.html)....
