BOYS FROM THE BLACKSTUFF

This was without a

doubt the best film ever to come out of Liverpool. What are your memories / thoughts about this film?

SUPERB!

I've got a copy of the whole series on video (somewhere in the loft) but I think I'll splash out and buy the DVD set! This must be

one of, if not the best, drama series ever to reach our TV screens. If any of our younger members haven't seen it then they don't know what they've

missed.

The Muscle Market with Pete Postlethwaite is another Bleasdale classic, in similar style, but I'm not sure if it was ever released on tape or

DVD.

I've got a copy of 'Boys from the

blackstuff", I watch it about once a year.
'Muscle Market' was available on UKnova a while ago, I've got a copy in my computer I think. A quip in this

film was about the funiest typical scouse answer I ever heard. He comes home late, drunk and after being out with his fancy woman, he shouts up to his

wife,"Is me dinner 'ot luv?", she replies, "only if the bin's on fire". Pete postlethwaite is brilliant in everything I've seen him do, he should be made

an honorary scouser.

I just love when Yosser's building his wall by the Coach And Horses. Then there's when they go up north to Middlesboorough and the

young fella goes for the 'massage' and you see Yosser and the lads listening at the wall with glasses.

These scenes are from the film that came

before the series in 1981 - The Black Stuff - and from the first episode of the series - Jobs For The Boys.

Absolutely brilliant telly.

Liverpool playwright Alan Bleasdale created the original film "The Black Stuff" for BBC1's 'Play for Today' in 1978 although it was not shown

until 1980.

The film was so well received that Bleasdale created the series "Boys From The Blackstuff". BFTB was shown in 1982.

A 3 disc

DVD set is now available from HMV and other stores.

BOYS FROM THE BLACKSTUFF (BBC)

"Gizza job... I can do that. All you gotta do is walk in a

straight line!"

BFTB was before my day (I'm only 19!!!) but I've heard a lot about the series and had to buy the DVDs. I'm glad I did... definitely

some of the best TV I've ever seen.

BFTB - Alan Bleasdale's classic BBC TV series that defined the depression - scarred 1980s Britain.

Boys From The Blackstuff was shown on minor

viewing channel BBC2. It was taking the best rating which was unknwn. There were countless pleads to repeat it. They did "immediately" on prime time BBC1.

The fastest repeat ever.

It hit a raw nerve at the time, of a man slowly going insane because of the unemployment around him and affecting him - a

situation beyond his control.

You

are very perceptive Ross, it showed the political situation to perfection. If you get a chance to watch "Muscle Market", I'm sure you will enjoy that too.

BOYS FROM THE

BLACKSTUFF (BBC)

BFTB - Alan Bleasdale's classic BBC TV series that defined the depression - scarred 1980s Britain.

But the shameless

***** kept getting voted back in. What happened was it polarised the country, with the south Tory and the rest Lab or LibDem. Tory was only represented in

the country areas in the north (usually out of petty snob reasons - look at Heswall).

BTW, didn't Bleasdale canvass for Thatcher? is that true?
