A NEW DVD will give

viewers a virtual tour of Liverpool's Williamson tunnels - from the comfort of their own living room. :PDT_Aliboronz_24: :celb (23):

Miles of brick and

sandstone caverns and tunnels running below Edge Hill can now be seen without making the journey underground.

The DVD has been produced by the Friends

of Williamson Tunnels and Mirabilis Media, and funded by the Culture Company.

The virtual trip includes rarely-seen passageways and triple decker parts

of the excavations.

The tunnels have been described as "the largest underground folly in Britain".
The man behind them, Joseph Williamson made a

fortune in the tobacco trade, before retiring in the early 1800s to Edge Hill and spending almost all his fortune paying men to build an immense and

intricate labyrinth.

Frank Hodges, from Friends of Williamson Tunnels, said: "Today access is restricted to three entry points - the Tunnels Heritage

Centre in the old Liverpool Corporation stableyard, the site of Williamson's House, and the Paddington site. Further progress is blocked by rubble and

bricked-up arches.

"The virtual tour features all three sites plus the story of Williamson himself and the lost tunnels - those tunnels which are still

to be rediscovered and restored."
