Is, or was anyone into Northern Soul?
I've always loved uptempo soul beats, but never quite got into the Northern Soul scene. In the early 70s,
Liverpool was more into the Funk thang:) but a gang of us from Canny Farm used to go up to the Wigan Casino for a few months. We gave up in the end, because
we got fed up being chased by the huge amount of Manc Northern Soulers who went there. Happy Daze!:unibrow:

BTW, amongst others, I found this mint condition blue label Atlantic 1969
Drells record in a Manila second hand record shop. Bought it for 20p!:celb (23):

Nah, the Canny Farm lads I knocked around with dressed in a proto casual/scally way. Punk came
around a couple of years later in 76/77 which was when I suddenly discovered RAWK! I'd moved down to London by then and saw quite a few bands. BTW,
cracking performance by PiL (Careering) on The Old Grey Whistle Test DVD. If somebody can tell me how I can rip it and post it to youtube, please PM

OMG! How old RU? LOL!
When I lived in Highbury New Park N5, I saw
them in the Hope & Anchor. The bands played in the basement, a bit like The Cavern except not so deep down. It probably cost me 50 pence for entry. Menace
had a cracking single called GLC (Greater London Council) which I have knocking around somewhere.

That was another interesting pre-punk band. Never quite got into them like I did with the
likes of Roxy Music. Nope, not on the DVD.

speaking of Funk - there was a phase of 'Jazz Funk' and 'African Funk' in the Soul clubs in L'pool during the 1970s.
Does anyone remember 'Ossi Bissi' or 'Matumbe?' (not sure if my spelling is correct).
We used to go to the 'Time Piece' club in Fleet st
which was Funk orientated and often had live bands.
The 'Victoriana' club was my stamping ground - OMG we lived for our nights at that club !:D we
used to go twice a week come rain or shine. Great Soul music played there and also many live Soul acts. Ike & Tina Turner were on there once although I
didn't see them.
Northern Soul was good but I never got heavily into it.

The Timepiece was almost a Blacks only (can I say that?)
club when I went there in the early 70s. If you wanted to listen to the latest "imported" funk sounds, that was the place to be. You probably mean Osibisa.
Haven't a clue about the other one, but Afro Soul's Manu Dibango was pretty hot at that time:PDT_Piratz_26:

Went there a few times too Lindy!! I was really into Parliament and
Funkadelic and Cameo before they went too mainstream - when they did Cardiac Arrest.
Did you see George Clinton on the telly on Saturday - BBC2. Had
all the Parliament/Funkadelic stuff on Mothership Convention - it was a hoot. :celb (23): Mmmm..big 70s style Afros and long leather coats....could turn a

I used to get the magazine 'Blues & Soul' .... I had stacks of them and kept them for years. Then I had a
clear out and got rid of them. I probably should have kept hold of them - they might have been collectors items now!
Blues & Soul was a
way of keeping in touch with what was going on.
I remember in the clubs when word would get around that there was a new sound out, or a new dance -
usually from USA.
Someone would demonstrate, and we'd all practice the steps 'till we got it right !! Ha! You had to be perfect to look cool ! :celb
(6):
A lot of the dances had complicated steps and you'd practice in your front room before hitting the town ! :)
It's amazing that you can get
anything you want via the computer now.
OMG, we used to wait weeks before the latest James Brown record reached the UK. We'd get word that he'd
released another and it wouldn't come out here for ages.
If you were lucky and knew someone that was coming from America they might bring it for you.
Same with Reggae. It was great if you could get stuff from Jamaica brought over.
We used to use a particular record shop that got imports. You'd go
down to see what was the latest stuff in.
Or I sometimes used to order stuff by post from the likes of 'Greensleeves.'
People are lucky now
that they can see and hear groups instantly on the inter-net. We didn't even know what some of our favourite stars looked like - especially the Reggae
artists.

Les Spain is a legend! Played the best sounds by any DJ I've ever heard. Greensleeves used to have a shop on
the corner of Seven Sisters Road/Stamford Hill/Tottenham High St, London in the 70s. I think that was before they even had a record label. Me and the missus
used to live nearby on top of a betting shop in 629a Seven Sisters Road. I was and still am into heavy dub reggae 70s stylee:) and it made my day when I
discovered the shop.
BTW I think Blues and Soul morphed from the magazine BM (Black Music). Here's one of their mags from March 1981 with Marvin on
the front cover. Got a loft full of them:PDT_Piratz_26: Do you remember Black Echoes? That was a cracking read. More emphasis on reggae than the Blues and
Soul mag' which concentrated solely on Funk and Soul. God! I feel so old!:disgust:

I'd forgotten about the 'BM' mag and 'Black Echoes ... it was all so long ago ! :D
I had some mags brought from America ( back in the
70s) - 'Ebony' and 'Jet' ... lots of ads in them for Marlboro cigarettes, Big Macs, and 'Afro Sheen' :D

Reliving the soul of '70s
COOL cats and groovers twisted the weekend away at the annual Northern Soul event in Blackpool.
Promoters Richard Searling and Kev Roberts, two of the original DJs from the 70s, presented the weekend of top tunes at the Tower. More than 1,400 people attended the events which were once the highlight of the social calendar during the decade.
Blackpool and Wigan were the top venues in the North West for Northern Soul, which attracted a cult following. This weekend's event was the biggest ever held in the country since 1976.
