View Full Version : Dingle Community Theatre Events *Billy Fury* the *Fourmost*
Hello
all
http://www.dinglecommunitytheatre.co.uk/
I've been involved with this theatre group on off for a couple of years now (tech
side) they're a registered charity # (1098183) and have had funding by Capital of Culture for certain shows and events.
There aim is to eventually have a
community theatre (bricks 'n' mortar) of their own as an arts centre to help raise the profile of the area and involve youngsters in positive activities,
giving people avenues for creative energy. They believe it would help boost the local economy by bringing in touring groups and raising the image of the
Dingle as a lively cultural area, and I'm sure it will. Join the campaign :protest:
Anyway my latest venture with them is a play that runs for 5
nights at the Gladstone theatre in Port Sunlight (30th Jan - 3rd Feb 07) called "Like I've never been gone" a story about Billy Fury, Dingles 60's rock
'n' roll legend, including Billy hatton (Fury's mate) of the famous 60's group "Fourmost" with his band playing along in the perfomance. :PDT_13: This
will showcase some of the finest writing, acting, directing, and music from Liverpool.
Take a trip to their site and see what's on, or email them
and get involved if you fancy a bit of acting or learning how to direct or the like, there lots of events for you to get involved in...:celb (23):

PhilipG 10-31-2006, 07:31 AM Hello p.mc.
It would be lovely if
the former Gaumont cinema at the Dingle could become a theatre.
It's been unused for about 10 years.
Wow!! that's
a brilliant idea Phil, and to think it's almost purpose built for it, I wonder who owns the building now, I see they've been using the roof space for
satelite recievers...Phones etc.
Regards

I don't know if it still belongs to Mecca Bingo, but they will know (as will
Liverpool City Council).
After it closed as a bingo hall in 1997, it was planned to open it as a venue for functions, etc, but it was refused a liquor
licence (which it would have had as bingo!). I don't know if that person had bought the building or whether he leased it.
There is a large stage and 2
dressing rooms, and even room for an organ. (There had been a Wurlitzer, but I think it's now gone).
The building will be 70 years old in March 2007.
shytalk 11-02-2006, 04:52 PM Sounds like a great plan, eventually it will get vandalised, then demolished if someone doesn't put it to use.
P.S. It was built in the same
year as my first car, shown In my avatar.
I was talking to someone from "Dingle Community Theatre" and he said it'd been mentioned as a
venue, but they're still at the campaigning stage, s'pose there's no point in talking to the owner(s) at this point in time, but I reckon it's a great
venue, and the building looks quite secure.
I did hear it was going to be a wetherspoons pub at one time, I think the locals disagreed with a public
house on the site??
Regards

MissInformed 11-25-2006, 05:46 PM I heard it was gonna be a wetherspoons too.
that was about 3 years ago though,
It would be in keeping with their tradition of buying old cinemas and restoring them.
At least the building would be in good use.
Anyone have any pics of inside the Gaumont?
DingleBoy 12-20-2006, 04:42 AM I think they're looking at the old Palace Theatre on Mill Street as a possible venue... fingers crossed.

Yeah another good venue (stop the rot) and put the building to some positive use.
Had a look on your site, you didn't do too bad for a Dingle lad :unibrow:

Yea I know someone who's involved and I'm hopefully going to look at working with them when I get back to Liverpool. Quite excited about that!

I believe there's squatters living in the building at the moment. It doesn't seem to be securely locked up

I always thought it looked secure.
There's usually a light shining upstairs, but that's been on for years.
I'll just nip out now & have a look.
OK, done that.
All the doors look secure enough - no signs of tampering.
The usual little light is still on.

DingleBoy, the theatre you refer to on Mill Street, would that be The Park Palace OF Varities? built around 1890.

Thanks Phil. I have seen dubious looking characters slipping into the building through one of the doors near the traffic lights. Perhaps they lock them from the inside whilst in the building.
munchkim 01-31-2007, 07:48 PM I went to see the Billy Fury play at the Gladstone Theatre, Port Sunlight last night. It was just briiliant and I can throughly recommend it.
