View Full Version : The Royal Family
Well, as mentioned in the shout box, what a brilliant episode
tonite and very touching I almost shed a tear for nanna, reminded me of when I lost my nan and grandad.
Then came the TV show afterwards with vrious
people ie Peter Kay etc.. talking about the programme but I was almost offended by J K Rowling being in there, talking about the 'family' like she knows
what its like, behave yourself love, u are the richest woman in the UK probably and u expect us to believe your fake fondness for a working class life? Of
course you know the folks who are the real deal don't ya?!!
Louis 10-29-2006, 11:41 PM the episode was brilliant, very well done, both hilarious and sad,
and finished in a nice way not cheesily done. its like it hadnt been on hiatus for 6 years, the writing was as good as it ever was
shytalk 10-30-2006, 02:20 AM I just checked UKnova, it won't be on
there because they are selling it on DVD, so I cant get it. :(

Unfair, Kev. Whilst Ms Rowling's praise of the Royal Family and its portrayal of a type of
working class life might seem like social tourism when coming from a person as rich as she is now, the woman herself came from a modest south Wales/west
country background. If you read Rowling's story, she'd had quite a difficult life - single mother and so on - before her Potter books became
successful.
As she told us last night, the Royle Family reminds her of her own background and the people she knew from her own family and the
comprehensive schools she attended.
There's working class people down south as well you know. Why weren't you also offended by Noel Gallagher,
another mega-rich person from a working class background talking about the series, for example?

Because I don't believe J K Rowling has enjured any of the working class hardships and life experiences that are so brilliantly
portrayed in the Royal Family.
Single parent families arn't exclusive to the working class. I assume that J K Rowling has had quite a rich upbringing
in terms of opportunities and positive life experiences. She doesn't posess the slightest hint of any regional accent.
Any info on her upbringing would
be appreciated.
Louis 10-30-2006, 03:59 PM also noel gallagher
has been in the royle family situation, hes earned the right to talk about it plus, Half The World Away is the theme tune to the programme which noel wrote,
and can be found on the Masterplan album:)

Hi Kev. I think that you're assuming too much from Joanne Rawling's accent, such as it is, and also
probably not identifying it very accurately either.
Firstly, although not from a priviliged background, she is from the south of England and therefore
her accent probably didn't have to change much to get from the one she grew up with to the accent she has now. If it has changed, it's probably an
inevitable result of her leaving her home area in early adulthood to attend university, before living in other places away from her roots. That said, her
accent she has, although southern, doesn't sound exactly "posh" to my ear. Most people down south who end up in office jobs, end up speaking something like
how she now does.
As for Ms Rowling's background, she herself claims to be from a working class background. She may be exagerating the humbleness of
her roots, I suppose, perhaps in response to people who assume that the public school setting of her novels reflects her background. However, we know that
she attended state school and is not from the most glamourous part of the country (south Gloucestershire). Her father was a fitter
(apprenticed).
Obviously a bright and studious girl, J K Rowling did well at school and went to university (in Exeter, not Oxbridge or even other
posho favourites: Durham, Bristol, Edinburgh or St Andrews). Nevertheless, it appears that until she began writing, life had not been terribly kind to her,
with her mother dying young from MS. Neither was her career really going places until she starting writing the Potter novels, something she didn't do until
she was already over thirty and bringing up a kid on her own in Edinburgh.
All in all, she sounds like a clever, swotty girl from a perfectly normal
background; the daughter of ambitious (for her) upper working class parents. Whilst it's not entirely accurate to say that her family background is
identical to the borderline underclass mileux portrayed in the Royle Family (dad long-term unemployed, elements of criminality evident in friends and
acquaintences), the women will certainly know what working class families are like - she grew up in one.

scouserdave 10-31-2006, 02:07 PM I just don't get it. I know how popular it is and I've watched a few episodes over the years, but I just
think it's so fake.
Anyway, I love Corrie, so what do I know?!:disgust:

LOL!:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
My mum told me that in the old days, it was quite common to have pet
monkeys in the house, brought back by the lads in the Merch.
Apparently we had an Amazonian Parrot when I was a babbie...The only word it knew, no word is the wrong description... It went
wahhhhh wahhhhh muwahhhh.
Just like me :D so we got a budgie called Joey.

My Grandma had a budgie called
Joey and it lived for 17 years. It's buried in the back yard of 137 Leopold Road, Kenny. (wipes away a tear)
Brenda 10-31-2006, 05:14 PM I remember when we were kids, my brothers and sister let the budgie out of the
cage and the shilling in the meter ran out, well the next thing was me dad put the money in the meter and the lights came back on.
We all started to look
for the budgie and here it was dead on the floor...we all maintained "it wasnt me that stood on it" and knew we'd all be in trouble so we decided to make it
look like the budgie was still alive by making a paste out of flour and water and glueing the budgie to the perch and leaning it up against the bars.
Me
dad who was a bit shortsighted was still chatting away to it 3 days later.
Them were the days eh!!!

Must admit that's exactly what I said - not just about J K Rowling, but about other 'celebs' too - how everyone says that they know
people and households like the Royle family. I don't believe it for a minute. Not from certain ones anyway. Half of them wouldn't know what it
was to live in a household like the Royle family!
I wasn't convinced by J K Rowling saying she knew all the real life Royle family characters.
For one thing the Royles are very typically northern.
Of course there are similar families all over the country but I do think this is
essentially northern.
lindylou 10-31-2006, 09:35 PM Hands up who cried at the telly :D
I did ! :D
I cried a few times .... the bit when the song 'Que
Sera, Que Sera' came on and Nana and Barbara started singing along.
... and next door neighbour Joe singing 'Pal Of My Cradle days'
....
those type of songs are always sentimental.
Just watching this on UK Gold now, brilliant episode with rollercoaster of emotions. My favourite bit by far is Jim flying into a rage because Nana has borrowed the batteries out the remote control.
