View Full Version : Where would like to live?
Sloyne 10-29-2006, 03:59 AM Given the choice and, if not your present
location, just where in the world would you rather live? My own choice would be Touranga, North Island, New Zealand.

That's very nice Sloyne, I'd love to live in France, as I've been there a few times, Paris if I had the
dosh. Other than that I've only been to Spain and places in GB.
Poss Cornwall near the sea, otherwise somewhere warm, don't fancy Oz or NZ, I have been over Europe, loved Turkey. One of the
most amazing countries that I have been to is South Africa.
A.D.Williams 10-29-2006, 10:57 AM Quite happy in Garston thank you.
:)
Liverpool wise Woolton Village.
Errmm: Maybe France too, sadly Japan's too crowded and small,
otherwise wouldn't mind that.
France is cheap for food though.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
sweetpatooti 10-29-2006, 02:53 PM British Columbia is lovely - I
wouldn't mind there - been to France a lot and that is nicer the further south you go (warm weather makes people friendly) and I LURRVVE Florida - but you
have to think about when you are old and grey don't you? Who will look after you when your sick - my Auntie used to live up a mountain in a very rural part
of British Columbia and I used to think "how would an ambulance get to you up there?" Seriously, they used to have to abandon the car at the bottom of the
hill in the winter and walk up to the house. I think the best bet is a warmer part of Europe - down Bordeaux way or by La Rochelle - that is a gorgeous part
of the world and the medical care is excellent - just have to learn the lingo now! If my kids emigrate like I have told them to, I will go to them three
months' apiece and never have to come home at all....hooray:celb (23):
I'd like too retire to Cork or Dubhlin,I'd prefer Lerwick in the Shetlands though.
Sloyne 10-29-2006, 05:07 PM British Columbia is lovelyBut the BC coast, from the lower mainland up to Prince Rupert, which is almost the Alaska
border, has a climate like Manchester. The Rockie's have the same climatic effect on BC's coast as does the Penines on Manchester. But yes, BC is a
beautiful province.
shytalk 10-29-2006, 06:27 PM I'm happy where I am, Alot of people retire to Florida, I did it the other way around I moved from Florida to the hills.

sweetpatooti 10-29-2006, 07:38 PM Wow that looks fabulous. Dya get many gators??
bobbymac 10-29-2006, 08:01 PM Given the choice and, if not your present location, just where in the world would you rather live? My own choice would be
Touranga, North Island, New Zealand.
Hi, I live in the Okanagan valley, B.C. Gets scorching in the summer, but we don't have the humidity
that you have around Toronto and Hamilton (lived there too) A girl from the next St. to me in the 'Pool lives in Touranga, She loves it.
Sweetpatootie,
What mountain did she live on? There's sooo many here.:Colorz_Grey_PDT_16:
Howie 10-29-2006, 08:58 PM A narrowboat on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal would be nice! :)
Norm NZ 10-29-2006, 10:18 PM Quite happy in
Garston thank you.
:)
"Good On Yer" Mate! I'm quite happy here in NZ but must admit Garston would be my next choice (or maybe Hale or
Halewood!!):celb (23):
I agree with Hale, but Halewood's average to
me. By the RSPCA has some nice houses though.
Would have to ride to Speke all the time from Hale though for supplies.
shytalk 10-30-2006, 02:14 AM Sweetpatooti, No, no gators up here, had plenty when I was in
Florida though. We had one on the heliport where I worked, animal control came and took it back to a swamp. The river in the picture is very good for fishing
but I havn't tried yet. The city built a park there, I take my dog Heinz down there for a walk, very relaxing. No prizes for guessing what breed Heinz is.
:)
Howie, In the 70's I had a boat on the Bridgewater canal, moored at Preston Brook marina, I didn't live on it but it was a great way to spend a
peacefull weekend and you saw places you could never see from the road. I would have loved a narrow boat but mine was just a 2 berth cruiser.
theninesisters 10-30-2006, 06:44 PM I've lived in Childwall all my life so far and love the area but if I had to up sticks and move, there's only one
place - the Isle of Man...if only for the de-restricted road speeds :slywink:
bobbymac 10-30-2006, 07:15 PM Have faved your site, will look later.
Welcome M8.
peewak 10-30-2006, 08:51 PM Having spent muchof 2005 backpacking in the U.S.A &Canada, I'd love to live in Toronto,Ontario,Canada. I went to quite a few small
pretty towns in Canada. nice but a bit dull, I am too much of an urbanite and Toronto is a extremley crazy town, i just loved it,especially queen
street.:celb (6):
I agree with
Hale, but Halewood's average to me. By the RSPCA has some nice houses though.

Whats average about Halewood?
sweetpatooti 10-30-2006, 09:15 PM Sweetpatootie, What mountain did she live on? There's sooo many
here.:Colorz_Grey_PDT_16:
She lived on the island Bobbymac. I think it was Metchosin or somewheres. She moved a while back to the coast of
the island - I have never been but it looks lovely in the photos - she is amongst more people now so it's a bit safer for them if they get sick.
I've been to Okanagan many moons ago - peaches big as footballs - in fact I think I wanna live there! Got any spare rooms????
bobbymac 10-30-2006, 09:46 PM For you Sweety, of coures. LOL>:celb

Whats average about Halewood?
Just nothing special there.
lindylou 10-31-2006, 08:38 PM yes, it's just an unremarkable place.
scouserdave 10-31-2006, 08:52 PM Probably returning to Liverpool.
I truly feel sorry for
those who couldn't hack it in the UK and felt the need to travel thousands of miles away to make a living.

Don't feel sorry for me Dave. I didn't leave because I couldn't make a living. When I sold up to
leave everything including my house was paid for, I owed nothing. There is no way I would return to the UK while the streets are infested with yobs, I'm
sure all I read in the papers can't be lies. As sloyne said, we can choose from a vast variety of locations. He chose Toronto and Florida, I lived in
Florida for 25 years and wanted a change, so I retired to the hills anf I love it.
I can afford to come to the Uk any time I want, but about every 2 years
is enough for me, there is still a lot I want to see over here.:037:
Waterways 11-02-2006, 10:12 AM A narrowboat on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal

On top of the Brunswick Quay Tower when it is built would be nice.

I don't blame them. I have been around a lot of the world. When I talk to UK people who
have emigrated to South Africa, Canada, USA, etc. Eventually I find that they left the UK because the of overpriced super small pokey homes here in the UK.
They tend to live in homes that in the UK you would need to be a top executive to afford - their lifestyles are much superior. At one time in the 1960/70s
two lines of people could be seen at airports. One of native Britons going to Australia and one of immigrants into the UK from third world countries. All
because of land and planning.
There is no need for it, as the UK only has 7.5% of the land settled and 5% of this is open spaces of parks, gardens,
etc which means only 2.5% of the land in the UK is paved. The Stalinist planning system means we are not allowed to build on subsidised fields doing nothing
in open countryside. Also 0.66% of the population own 70% of the land - the super rich for taking rent.
All this financially strangles the average
Briton when it comes to housing as the artificial land shortage ramps up land price - and hence house prices, and then large mortgages and less expendable
income.
Go to:
http://www.saveliverpooldocks.co.uk
Then go to the link to the Land Article under the Menu. There is three links
to articles on planning. Read the land article and then the three articles by the Policy Exchange in that order from top to bottom as listed.
It will
take a little time, but understand them and then you will be enlightened.
shytalk 11-02-2006, 12:48 PM Stories like this definitely put me
off ever returning to live in the
UK.

join. If they dont want to say what they did for a job - boo hoo to the enquirer.

Aye, nowt wrong with being a mystery man,
helps keep your life in order, 'specialy when you could become a target for every begger onthe web. Stay aloof Sloyne old chap.
Sloyne 11-02-2006, 08:00 PM Stay aloof Sloyne old chap. Thanks bobby, however, it's not
aloofness that makes me so reticent but an actual personal bad experience I have had on the web.
shytalk 11-02-2006, 09:01 PM No problem here
either Sloyne, Bobby and I think alike, Great minds y'see( or is it that fools seldom differ?)
sweetpatooti 11-02-2006, 09:54 PM I don't need to know all your ins and outs - it's enough just to chat.
For me, it would be the change in
lifestyle that would make me want to emigrate - I wish I had done it when I was younger but I didn't want to leave me Mam and Dad (Dad was sick) and now
Mammy is getting old so I don't want to leave her. Plus it is probably a bit late for me and my chap now - no one will have us (even if we do work our
tripes out every week). I would love to come home from work at the end of the day and be able to spend time outdoors - beach or walks - not important. The
weather here keeps you slumped in front of the telly 9 months of the year. That's why I would like to go somewhere warmer.
I was born round the
corner from where I live now in Garston - and I live opposite my Mam where I grew up - I hope my kids manage to get a bit further than me!
Ah well,
you choose a path and travel down it.....

I have a similar lifestyle and live in poxy
Luton!
Errrrrmmm actually, I've just argued in your favour, haven't I?:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
Joking apart though, when you pop your clogs, do you want to
be buried/cremated in Ontario or Liverpool? The thought of finishing my life in Luton is not an option I want to consider. I want to get back to Liverpool
asap.
wallasey 11-02-2006, 10:31 PM As some of you will know, I lived in Northumberland for pretty much all
of my life (of 17 years). I always wanted to live in my "ancestual" home which is Wallasey; although if truth be told, it's only on my grandma's side which
is completely Scouse as they lived in and around Belmont Road, Tuebrook. My Grandad came from Sheffield, however, it's only distant relitives that live
there now so I don't really feel "at home" in Sheffield.
I actually went there on 01NOV06 from Liverpool. On the way back, I was glad to be back on
our side of the hill and even more glad to be on our side of the M62 and even more glad to see our skyline over the rooftops of South Liverpool. For me, this
is home!
Waterways 11-02-2006, 10:45 PM I have been all over
the USA. I spent a lot of time there and was offered a job there by the US company I worked for. Not that impressed.
There are no places in the
world that have hit me as a "must live here" place, otherwise I would be there.
bobbymac 11-03-2006, 03:08 AM Hey Wallasey, I came

Well, my Grandma's side of the family live round by Clifton Road ( off West Derby Road) and in a property called "Beura Villa" Or
something like that. We think it might have stood on Belmont Road but has long since been demolished!
It is quite pleasant area though, although,
Tuebrook's Main centre (West Derby Road) is a little bit grotty as the council widened the road and never built the other side back again!
bobbymac 11-03-2006, 09:14 PM Clifton Rd. ran from Tuebrook, one block down from Breck Rd. Then turned

They turned it into new houses a few years back. Note that the original spire is still on the

We went and visited Clifton Road
last year but unfortunatly, our "villa" was no-where to be found! Such a shame really! But it does give me an excuse to go into the Liverpool Records Office
and the Library to do some digging!
Sloyne 11-07-2006, 03:06 PM So you live on a boat?Sorry Max, I missed your post but someone kindly brought it to my
attention. As to your question; No, but I did once, that was when I was a member of the Merchant Navy and registered on the Liverpool Pool and I also owned a
sailboat at one time, it was a Roberts 38', Tahiti ketch. It slept six comfortably. I never lived on it but could have done. It was capable of long open
ocean voyages and is still being sailed, by it's present owner, in and around the BVI and USVI. But you know Max, living aboard a luxury liner beats living
in a lot of places I lived before I left Liverpool. For example, I was re-housed from Rose Place, Scotland Road to a tenement close to your neck of the
woods, Edge Hill. The best way to describe those flats was "rabbit warrens". They were dirty, damp, cold and vermin infested. My paternal grandparents were
not much better off living in even older tenements on Fairbank off Wellington Road, Wavertree. When I married we bought a house on Chatsworth Street, Edge
Hill, a glorified 'two up & two down'. It was listed as a "three" bedroom but one of those three rooms was smaller than the clothes closet in the master
bedroom of the house in which I now live in Canada. And I am not exagerating. We converted that "bedroom" into a bathroom with a shower. Our neighbour's,
Mr. & Mrs. "Bunny" Williams and family had cockroaches and bed bugs which, like vermin will, migrated through the walls into our house. We were forced to
move within a year and couldn't sell the house, for obvious reasons.
But no, I don't "live on a boat" as you put it, but I do spend as much time as
a can aboard luxury cruise liners, as a paying pax.
Thanks for asking.:)

I remember that!.. my mum had a corner shop in Hillberry Avenue for years.. I remember when they pulled all the shops down on that side of the road, there was a chinese laundry on the corner of Hillberry Ave and West Derby Rd.. it used to fascinate me to see the chinese writing on the sheets.. and they used to parcel them up so neatly in brown paper and string.
I went back a few years ago.. my mum's shop is long gone.. as is the wood yard and ice cream factory.. and even Pringle St the home of one Chrissie Maher who is quite famous now for the campaign for real English.. I remember her and her family well.. especially her lovely mum.. but it's all gone now

shytalk 02-10-2007, 12:29 PM Hi tups, it is years since I left the area, I can't remember where there was a corner shop on Hillberry Ave. I had one at the corner of Silverdale and Braddan Aves for a couple of years in the 60's. I lived in Sutton St. at that time.

wow!.. small world.. was your shop just round the corner by the greengrocers?
mum's shop was called Eileen's.. she had it from about 1961 to 1973.. it was opposite the old feather factory that became the ice cream factory.. next to mum's shop was a small printers and above that was Tommy Foley's builders.. they also had the yard space next to the shop.
there was a jigger next to the shop, then 2 houses.. then a hairdressers on the corner of Pringle St, at the end of Pringle St there was a larger printers.
Next to the feather factory was the timber yard, always remember mum making pans of scouse and pea soup for the lads in the winter.
Shops in those days were really big parts of the community, I remember when decimalisation came in and the old folk were really worried they couldn't get to grips with it.. they relied on the small shopkeeper as they trusted them, also remember when it was snowing, mum sent us kids out to her regular elderly customers to make sure they were ok.
We sold everything in that little shop.. even small bags of coal and bundles of wood.. they were good days.
whjch part of Sutton St did you live in?.. we used to walk up Sutton St home.. we lived in Richland Rd, off Green lane. Do you remember the murder in Sutton St in the 60's?
Hey Tups, you and Shytalk may have a little in common, maybe try and catch him when he's on. Really he's not shy in talking at all.:celb (23):

shytalk 02-10-2007, 03:33 PM Tups,
Yes it was around the corner from the greengrocers, his entrance was in Braddan, mine is Silverdale. I bought the shop from a Mr. Croft who had owned it for years.
I was born at 71 Sutton st. which was my Grandfathers house, at that time we lived in Well Lane Childwall. I moved back to Sutton St. in 1964 into number 61. No I don't remember a murder in the street while I lived there. My aunt remained in 71 Sutton St. until she died in about 1990. My Grandfather was the first tenant of 71 Sutton St. when it was first built. My aunt bought it after he died in 1958.

Now you described your Mums shop I do remember it but I don't think I ever went in it.
I left Sutton St. in January 1982 to move to the U.S.A. My last visit back there was in 2005 and we walked all around the area.
:037:
Sloyne 02-10-2007, 03:45 PM Good f' everyone then.. !!
How are we T'day Sloyne..Well I Hope..Well? yes, but it's very cold up here. Temp is -10 at present with a wind chill of -18 but, not to worry, i'll be back in Florida on Monday (I hope).
I was born at 13 Rose Place which, as you know, is at the bottom end of Scotland Road in St. Joseph's parrish, Grosvenor Street. We had no choice in staying, or leaving, our house having been condemned due to Adolphs bombs a few years before. My Mam moved back to Burlington Street after we all grew up but was re-housed again when they demolished the tennies. Her local's were Mad Mick's ('The Rising Sun') and the 'Green Man'. Her parrish then was Our Lady's, Eldon Street. I still have lots of relations in the area and visit everytime I am home.
Gerard 02-10-2007, 04:47 PM This would have been your neck of the woods then Sloyne !!

St Josephs School is the Green net Covered Building Left of picture,Bishop Goss, "oh yes, I remember it well". My aunty Rosie Willo (Williams) nee Fitzpatrick lived in the first row of "luxury" flats facing onto Scotland Road on Rose Place which are the second row of flats to the left of St Joeys as you look at the picture. Those flats were built after we were moved out. Me Mam tried to get back into one of them without luck.
Thanks for posting the picture.

I left Sutton St. in January 1982 to move to the U.S.A. My last visit back there was in 2005 and we walked all around the area.
:037:
yes.. I remember it as Croft's :-).. I'm trying to place the way the no's went in Sutton St.. did you live Green Lane end or nearer the swings end?
I had friends living opposite the flats there. The murder happened around 1966
a woman murdered her hubby.. everyone knew everyone in those days and the family were customer's of my mum's.. it was at a house close to Green Lane end.
I was only a youngster in those days, used to go to Lister Drive School.. also spent many a happy hour playing in the swings and going through the railway tunnel past the bowling green into Newsham Park.
Do you remember the Carlton Cinema and bowling Alley that used to be on West Derby Rd/Green Lane?.. it turned into the Coconut Grove and the Painted Wagon pub in later years.. but I remember going to the ABC minors on a Saturday morning.. we used to have a shilling pocket money.. 3d for an ice cream whilst in there and 3d for a pack of salt and shake crisps in the afternoon.. always loved my Saturdays celb (23):
Gerard 02-10-2007, 06:20 PM Bishop Goss, "oh yes, I remember it well".
A bit closer for yer Sloyne..

bobbymac 02-10-2007, 07:31 PM Tubs, I come from Clubmoor, tho. my wild oats were sown up Tuebrook way. But the matinee at the Carlton was greatSometimes we'd do the Carlton in the morning, then the Clubby in the afternoon
shytalk 02-10-2007, 08:05 PM Tups,
The Sutton St. numbers run from Green Lane, I think number 1 was incorporated into the shop on the corner a while ago. That is a long block it runs to Snaefell ave. 61 where I lived was 3 houses from Snaefell corner. My aunts house number 71 was on the short block that runs from Snaefell to Silverdale.
I do remember the Carlton but only ever went there a couple of times. The Coconut Grove wasn't my style, I preferred to go to town. When it was a bowling alley I went in once.

I know where you mean now.. there was a corner shop on the Snaefell corner called Parkinsons.. do you remember that one?.. also the newsagents on the other side of the road, I am not being racist here but it was known as "the Indians" locally. He eventually bought out my mother's shop.. from the person she sold it to and ran both shops until my mum's was pulled down.
On the same block where your aunt lived there used to be an old lady who used to run out and chase off any children passing her door.. she put the fear of god in me!.. she must have had problems with kids at some time so we were all tarred with the same brush.. there were some great local characters in those days.
I don't know if I imagined seeing a photo somewhere on this site of Atkinsons bakery shop which used to be on Green Lane, does anyone know if it's still going?.. their pies and bread were gorgeous!

my mum was from Aintree originally but moved to Walton after her marriage and that's where we were born, Abingdon Rd, off Walton Hall Avenue, she bought the shop in Tuebrook and used to travel on 2 buses and work 12 hour days, she bought her first house in Richland Rd in 1968 and sold it in 1973 for £2500.. wonder how much it would be worth now... mind you £2500 was a small fortune in those days!!

Reg Parkin was the name of the guy who had that small shop, he was a nice fella, he used to play for EFC, after he left it was converted back to a house.
The man from the newsagent was actually from Egypt, his wife was the big bottle blond lady, they were pretty nice people. My aunt canceled her papers the day they took over she was very prejudiced.
It was probably her that used to chase you.
She used to go to Atkinsons almost every day for her bread.

I went back with my brother in the early 90's and called into their shop, mum's had long gone, wasn't her name Dot? it was her who told me that they'd bought out mum's shop, apparently the people who took it overfrom mum had ran it down. In those days it was rare to see a coloured person away from the town centre
