Here's a few pics of the oldest house in L9. It is the only house along the lane which has been kept to it's original design.
The owner said that he thinks it started off as a doctors house for Fazakerley hospital patients.

Hi Zap

You could be right that it's the oldest house in L9 although 1874 does not seem very old compared to what I know about the age of Liverpool buildings....

The old school house next to St Mary's, Walton is believed to date back to 1613.

Thomas Parr's House [complete with warehouse in the yard behind], Seel Street c.1799

According to James Stonehouse, writing in 1869 in The Streets of Liverpool: [Thomas] "Parr, used to boast that he had the handsomest house, wife, and horse, in Liverpool."

So there's no older houses in Fazakerley ? Are there any older ones in Aintree.
How about "the oldest in Norris green" ?

NL, there are lots of older houses around Liverpool with bricked up windows. There are some around Anfield where I live, will take a photie next time I'm out. Not sure what it was about, but used to hear the older generation tell us that it was to do with a window tax or something.
Sounds pretty bizarre windows being taxed

It's utterly true and very strange.

Childwall Abbey Pub gives an excellent example of this with the 4 'painted on' windows to the right.

Sounds like he owned 'house, wife & horse' - lock, stock & barrel. At least he had the common decency to put his wife, before his horse? :)

I reckon my grandads house off Stalmine (Firdale) was pretty old, always felt ancient anyway!

I used to live in Grey Road, Liverpool 9, off Rice Lane, between Walton Hospital and Hornby Road where Walton Prison is. There were quite a few large old houses, some of which appeared pretty old. Walton Park and Grey Road particularly

Childwall Abbey Pub gives an excellent example of this with the 4 'painted on' windows to the right.

Presumably they did this in anticipation of a repeal of the tax, so they could just knock the panels through and install new windows?

In some cases they inserted what looked like bricked up windows to break up a blank wall and give some symmetry.

Amazing and much applaus:handclap: to those builders of yesteryears... What great construction went into those structures, to still be standing.

Without all the equipment like today, these stone massons and architects and labor...had it down right... ta Waterways.. nice..

I'm going to be a bit pedantic here, but you've made an common error.

The first image doesn't actually show Birkenhead Priory. The ruins (and the tower) shown in the picture are that of St. Marys Church built by Thomas Rickman in 1821. The church was built alongside the ruins of the old priory and it's easy to get confused. It was partially demolished in 1975 leaving what you can see today.

I'm not sure about the second image. It could be part of the medieval undercroft now used as a chapel but the sonework looks too good to be medieval, unless it was part of the recent restoration. It's been a while since I've visited the priory site.
