View Full Version : Mersey night, sunrise and sun - set pics
No matter what I do, night time shots still look poor. Never mind. Took a couple tonite and had ideas of having a little snap-fest of local land marks lit up. However, everything was in darkness tonite apart from Paddy's Wigwam.

Mine were only done with a camera phone.
Could do some later.
scouserdave 10-01-2006, 09:37 PM Great shots Kev. Max, what mobile did use for the pics? Excellent quality. I've never ever taken a pic on my mobile. I can just about dial from it.

shytalk 10-01-2006, 10:02 PM I quite like the effect of slightly unclear night views, we don't see as well at night so they look more real.

scouserdave 10-01-2006, 10:45 PM The story behind this pic is a laugh. It was April 2003 and I was mooching around St George's Hall and Wm Brown St taking pics, when a load of people started coming out of St George's Hall. I used to hate having people in my pics, so I was hanging around, camera in hand, waiting for them to dissapear when I heard the clip clop of hooves behind me. I had a brief bad acid flash and thought it was one of my old girlfriends, but soon realised it was Liverpool Mounted Police. They asked me why I was taking shots of the people departing from St George's Hall. I just laughed (but very annoyed) and asked what the f**k it had to do with them. It turned out that the crowd departing from St George's Hall were attending an anti Gulf War meeting. I calmed down, explained who I was and showed them the pics on my camera. I then jokingly demanded that I be allowed to take shots of them. They were great. By chance, I bumped into the guy on the right a year later.

Did you get stopped by police for taking pics of the mersey tunnel by there like I did?
He told me it was against regulations to do that.
He reckoned it was a stupid rule anyway.
scouserdave 10-01-2006, 10:58 PM Did you get stopped by police for taking pics of the mersey tunnel by there like I did?
Just the once. He was almost embarrassed telling me. He asked me if I had a zoom, winked and suggested I take the same pic a little further away. Nice guy:)
Yeah there sound when they talk to you about it.
Was Nightime though for me to zoom.
I got a night one on one night when they must of not notice me to do anything but still wondering if it's good enough to put up as I'm not sure about the pixels.

Jesus, thats  . How did you get up martins bank building roof? Did 'they' just let you up? Or are you one of them psycho spidermen climbing cranes and such?
snappel 10-03-2006, 11:20 AM No one let me, but if you look at the back of the building it's obvious ;)
I was scared there might be sensors or alarms guarding the roof, but obviously the bank can't envisage prospective raiders abseiling in from black helicopters, and so I didn't get caught! There'd probably be a big fuss if they'd found me up there, and perhaps I'd have branded a 'prankster' or 'mindless idiot' or something, but it was totally safe. The way I saw it, I couldn't resist seeing the view from up there... it's a beautiful scene, it's perfectly quiet and I can take night photos at my leisure without some leering drunk or scally mob trying to attack me. The nice thing about all the regeneration in the city is that these opportunities come and go, so there's often something new to try.
This one was from the top of the Unity Towers site last February. Doesn't really compare to the bank one as my camera then didn't allow long exposures...

to put up too.
Snappel, how do you get into these buildings so easily?
snappel 10-27-2006, 03:30 PM It wasn't a building, and it wasn't easy!! I suppose I worked up from it ever since hopping a fence to take a leak once or twice on the way home from a
night out. You just have to be stealthy and stupid I think!
Next time you go out, you should try and do a panoramic pictures - they're loads of fun.
If you've got a tripod, then take a series of photos that overlap, then download Autostitch (it's free) and it'll stick them all together.
I was impressed that you got on the cranes in paradise street!
Ain't got a tripod
though.
snappel 10-28-2006, 12:08 AM I never did the
Paradise cranes! So far they're the ones I'm most nervous of trying - there are always people working in there, and it's lit up. Still, a mate of mine did
one after a night out on the piss... not a good idea!
I'd recommend getting a tripod - opens up lots of possibilities if your camera will let you do
long exposures.
Yeah, I got a proper Camera as well as my phone one that does better long exposures.
Would be great to go up those
cranes.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
Got some ones, I'll upload
later.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
Want to resize them to about 800 x 600 maximum.
The Pixels show too much when there too big.
snappel 10-30-2006, 10:15 PM Yes, resizing the pictures makes them look a bit better - I go
right down to 480 x 319 as it makes them easier to see on smaller monitors.
Managed to get some photos today at Princes Dock - I'll upload them
later. Probably the first time I've ever taken any in the twilight - got some interesting effects, as it's dark with lights on, but the sky is still
prominent...
I feel like killing when I see so many purple pixels on the pictures despite
the camera I'm using to be good one.
I did the Thistle Hotel again and get great results on taking that every
time.

snappel 10-31-2006, 02:48 PM Max, what camera have you got? Can you
alter the exposure time and ISO? Having a large ISO (800 or above) can cause 'noise' in your pictures. Not so obvious when you resize them, but it can be
annoying!
I tried some HDR manipulation yesterday. I took five shots of the same scene at five different exposures and used Photomatrix (visit
hdrsoft.com). Came out all right, but I think I need to investigate 'tone mapping' to get better
effects...
http://www.forties-design.co.uk/photos/princesdock/dock.jpg
The rest are exposures of around 3 seconds,
with an aperture of about F9 - F11. They're ok, but I wanted the sky a bit lighter - I think I'm going to go back soon and try each one with the same
effects as the first pictures above, and see how they come
out.

soon.
Have youse heard yourselves ? ... You bunch of David Baileys yers :D
snappel 10-31-2006, 03:47 PM Kev - your camera has a noise
reduction feature. Try taking some pictures on ISO 1000. Higher ISO means the camera (or film) is more sensitive to the light, so at night this can help
produce brighter images.
I think the best thing to do is go out for an evening and play around with the camera settings - it's what I tend to do, and
then try and remember what works best.

That camera is knackered, I (my son) damaged it a few weeks
ago, he dropped it onto the lens whilst he had turned it on, poor lad wants to be like his dad, he's 3.
Anyway, the focus wouldn't work, the zoom was
broke and over the weekend, it stoppped the starting up process so the lenses don't even come out of the camera body and it shuts down, so back to comet it
went.
Cheeky woman behind the service desk was like, 'oh eye, which cowboy has dropped this' and I denied I had ever dropped it. So I won't pay for it
to be fixed and it looks like they won't do it for nothing.
So a new camera should be on its way.
snappel 10-31-2006, 04:11 PM If
you're looking to buy a new camera, I rate the Fuji Finepix S5600. Has lots of good features, and allows you to play with aperture and shutter speed
settings, up to about 15 seconds which allows for good night stuff. Only £150 now at John Lewis, which is about half what I paid a couple of years ago for
the old S5000 which was far insuperior. Only downside is that it isn't a compact, and so is more cumbersome to carry about.
Thanks but actually gone for
this sony
one (http://www.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProduct.action?product=DSC-H2&site=odw_en_GB&pageType=Overview&category=DPH+Digital+Still+Cameras). I wanted to continue to use the 2GB memory card I had just bought for the other one.

Kev - that
looks just as good, if not better. You've got a good range of features there, and it's not too big and bulky. Nice to see you can do 30 second exposures -
lots of fun with light trails, etc, to be had there!

snappel 11-01-2006, 10:17 AM A good tripod is the Velbon CX Mini, available in Jessops for £19.99.
Quite small and very durable.
Your camera's not bad Max. If you sit the camera on a tripod and set the shutter speed to 3" (3 seconds), then you'll
get the maximum amount of light into the camera for the photo. If it has a manual ('M') mode, you should be able to change the apertures as well, right
down to F2.8, which means even more light into the camera.

Nothing at the moment.
The talk of a new road was years ago.
Very nice. Keep up the good work, young pup.
:)

lindylou 12-11-2006, 11:19 AM Excellent Max. Nice and clear.
PhilipG 12-11-2006, 09:40 PM Park Road.
This closed down last week.
All the signs, etc., have been taken away.
This photo was taken on 29 October.
I didn't know it was going to close, I just decided it was about time I took a photo.
It's a big building. I wonder what's going to happen to it now?
It's the perfect site for a 50-storey tower block!
It's right next to the highest spot in Toxteth.

Its gonna be a supermarket, Tesco I think :)
PhilipG 12-11-2006, 09:46 PM Its gonna be a supermarket, Tesco I think :)
That's an excellent idea.
The nearest Tesco in Aigburth Road has always been very busy, and is rather small.
Before the Park Road building was a bingo hall, it was a Co-Op supermarket called Leos and then Pioneer.
Bingo, CRUSH!
Tesco Yay!:PDT_Aliboronz_24:

The Kwiksave (Sommerfield) is opposite.

I'd rather have Tesco.
Sure somerfield down there closed down?
PhilipG 12-12-2006, 11:38 AM Sure somerfield down there closed down?
That was the one next to the Tesco in Aigburth Road.
It's going to reopen as Home & Bargain.
Home and Bargain rocks when you want sweets and fizzy drinks.
Always buying cat litter from them too.
One just opened on penny lane shopping park with a netto.:PDT_Aliboronz_24:

Er...Max! Cat litter is NOT for eating.
The Teardrop Explodes 12-12-2006, 01:55 PM I'd rather have Tesco.
Sorry but that's the nightmare scenario Phil.
I'd rather have Park Road/Kenny Road/Wavertree Rd lined with the premises of 24hour local or grocers, butchers and fishmongers, selling fresh food at about HALF the price of the corporates myself. And in case anyone thinks that's wishful thinking you want to research what's happening in my North London high street where the incumbant Turkish community actually COOK and demand groceries around the clock at rock bottom prices. I can get 5/6 full bags or two weeks worth of fruit and veg at 2pm or 2am for around £12-14. You just couldn't do that in Liverpool a bit to do with lack of demand too which is a real shame. You got the 'Tesco takeover' laying waste to vast tracts of urban high street and charging it's customers a premium to do so.
In Stoke Newington here, the only use most people have for our one supermarket (it's a Morrisons) is to spank it for tinned tomatoes.
Er...Max! Cat litter is NOT for eating.
Why not?:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
The Wood chip ones the nicest.:PDT_Piratz_26:
PhilipG 12-12-2006, 03:20 PM Sorry but that's the nightmare scenario Phil.
I know Tesco are the Big Bad Giant.
I was just saying I prefer them to Somerfield or Kwik Save.
I started my working life in Southport in 1961 for John Irwin, Sons & Co. Ltd, and that was the exact time that Tesco took them over, thereby moving into the North West.
All the supermarkets conspire together to fix their prices, so, apart from "Special Offers", the prices are all about the same.
Most noticeable are their own branded "Value" lines.
And they all go up by the same amount at the same time!
For instance, tinned potatoes went from 19p to 26p. Everywhere.
For years, a cheap tin of corned beef was 39p.
The price has crept up to double that in about 12 months.
Unfortunately, the convenience stores are even more expensive.
The Teardrop Explodes 12-12-2006, 03:40 PM Aye.
Thing is for everything other that the canned and processed stuff our convenience stores are actually WAY cheaper than the supermarkets. I can only think it's because of the demand- turkish community etc.
Just one street away where their most of their customers are lazy-arse white middle-class "professionals" the Turkish grocers prices are double.
I'll accept you want a supermarket for things like household gear, biscuits and the tins as the those are the products that tend to be overpriced in the smaller shops.

The Teardrop Explodes 12-13-2006, 08:57 PM good idea that. Been meaning to do a compilation of the ever more wacky stuff people adorn their houses with at Christmas.
Millenium madness was the one though. The stuff people erected in their gardens throughout Liverpool that 1999 Xmas got pretty mad. There was this amazing bigger-and-better decoration war all the way up Deverell Road. It demanded a photo compilation but alas I didn't have the means..Once only chance too...

Just stab the fluckers in the face with your car keys. Works for me. Seriously!

Everything was quiet all around.

I was trapped too. Had to knock on a door for some people to call the bizzies eventually- I was only 19 and we quite didn't have mobiles then..

Waterways 12-13-2006, 11:08 PM I started my working life in Southport in 1961 for John Irwin, Sons & Co. Ltd, and that was the exact time that Tesco took them over, thereby moving into the North West.
There was an Irwins in Mill St, and Tesco opened up - a double fronted shop. Large grocery shops were not heard of in those days, only department stores were large. Z Cars filmed a scene outside the Tesco. One scene where a man was running into the shop (robber) - each time they rehersed a local dog kept jumping in and barking. They left it in.
So a man ran into Tescos to rob it and the dog gave him away, jumping up and barking like hell - and he still manged to rob it.
Have my doubts about this one too.

The Teardrop Explodes 12-21-2006, 12:08 AM Kev those Sefton Parks are fantastic, particularly the first two.
Do you treat them in Photoshop afterwards?
Just spent spent 3 hours putting in an imaginary network of canals throughout Liverpool, marking out what the future boudaries of the city centre are likely to be and then shading in all the areas that'll have be flattened and rebuilt...all on Google Earth!
How did we waste time before all this **** man?! It's worrying!
