Here's more interior photo's of Speke Hall,it's a fantastic place and I think everyone grew up with the ghost stories of the spooks that are supposed to inhabit the place.
An old/ ancient door at Croxteth Hall: (1500 which makes it 500+ years old)

Allerton Priory- This place is extremely well hidden. It has been a home for the elderly, nuns once ran it as a refuge for Irish girls. It was temporary certified 18th May 1916 for 15 girls, re-certified 1917 as a mixed school as Allerton Priory Special Industrial School for mentally defective girls under 15'. It ceased to be a Home Office school in 1933. Now, private apartments.

Great Pics of the old Priory! Although I lived in the area, and my wifes family lived in Ravenna Rd, just around the corner from the Priory, I had never really seen it!! it was surrounded by walls etc and visitors had to apply to the 'Lodge' in Heath Rd. Your pics are showing us all, just what a lovely area we lived in, and did'nt really know it!!! Ta.

scouserdave 09-20-2006, 11:33 AM Cracking vids Kev. Never seen the interior of Crocky Hall before, even though I used to go egging/conker collecting within 100 yards of the place when the whole estate was off limits to the great unwashed of Canny Farm and Liverpool
Anyone recall the gamekeepers that prowled the estate?
Paul D 09-20-2006, 03:13 PM hahahaha.. oh jeez!!!

Hiya Dave it's good to hear from you again,I remember egging and looking for conkers down conker lane and I've heard about the gamekeepers,I believe they were pretty handy with the salt pellets.

Hiya Paul,
Conker Lane was our El Dorado as kids in Canny Farm. We used to get there by running across the field near the Alt, close to Crocky Hall Lane. The gamekeepers were mental. I still have a Liverpool FC scrapbook from 60s/70s (http://www.liverpoolpictorial.co.uk/scrapbook/). In the back I recorded the prices of birds eggs and comments about the "Gameys",
Cracking vids Kev. Never seen the interior of Crocky Hall before
No, I guess most people havn't seen it. I was very lucky to have wondered around unchallenged, wherever I wanted to go.
That was so funny I know that's not what you intended Kev but it certainly makes you smile, thanks for the excellent videos.:)

Allerton - Once home to the Fletcher family covering 140 years. The first house on the site was built in the early 1800s which was destroyed by fire. The second house was built in 1815.

November 1944 was gutted by fire again. The shell remains which shows fragments of its classical design. The obelisk at the side of the house had nothing to do with it, it was erected before 'Allerton' was built by occupants of Allerton Hall near by.

Sudley House (under restoration).
http://static.flickr.com/88/251276215_10e49c3a61.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ijob/251276215/)
At Sudley you can see the only Victorian merchant's art collection still held in its original setting. Ship owner and merchant George Holt bought the paintings during the late 19th century. His daughter Emma bequeathed the house and its contents to the city in 1944.
The history of Sudley House begins in the first decade of the 19th century.
Nicholas Robinson, a rich corn merchant, bought the land for £4500. The exact date of the house is unknown, and neither is the architect. Some exterior features suggest it may be the work of Thomas Harrison. He was working on a number of commissions in Liverpool between 1811 and 1815.
Nicholas Robinson was living in Sudley House by 1823 and the building was complete by the following year. Robinson was Mayor of Liverpool in 1828-9 and lived in the house until his death in 1854. His two daughters continued to live there until their own deaths in 1883.
Sudley was then sold to George Holt. He made many alterations to the property. He transferred the main entrance from the eastern to the northern front, creating a garden veranda on the eastern side. He extended the western end, which included building the tower.
Many of the features added since the 1880s can still be seen. The fireplaces, lincrusta wallpapers and oak panelling are still in place. The carved marble fireplace in the dining room bears the Holt family crest. It may have been acquired on one of the family's trips to Italy.
Today Sudley House is one of the few Victorian homes that still has many of its original features intact. It is also the only surviving Victorian merchant art collection in Britain still hanging in its original location.
Sudley House contains fabulous works by Gainsborough, Reynolds, Landseer and Turner, all displayed amongst original Victorian décor. The house itself is surrounded by pleasant gardens and parkland. A visit to Sudley House is a step back in time to an oasis of calm and beauty.
Twighlight Tours of Speke Hall begin this weekend.
Saturday, October 14, and again on Saturday, November 11.
Lisa Downes, house and
collections' manager at Speke, who is organising the event, said: "Tours will be given by costumed guides, who will be telling tales of the darker side of
what life was like at Speke over the years, including religious persecution and the dangers of being a Catholic under a Protestant monarchy, and beliefs,
myths and legends associated with the house."
To add to the atmosphere, musicians in Tudor costume from the Linton Ensemble will play music of the period
in the Great Hall.
There are four Twilight Tours, at 7pm, 7.30pm. 8pm and 8.30pm.
Tickets are £8
including refreshments and must be booked in advance. For details call 0151-427 7231.
Speke Hall Twighlight Tour
I wasn't aloud to take any pictures for security reasons which
was heart wrenching considering the treat that was to come. A tour of the house, our guide was extremely knowledgable and fascinating to listen to and live
music, the musicians dressed in period costume in The Great Hall.
The stories, the priest holes, it was all fantastic and I would recommend a trip and a
tour.

Allerton Tower - The once beautiful Italianate residence off Woolton Rd. Designed in 1847 by Harvey Lonsdale Elmes the Architect
of St. Georges Hall, for Sir Hardman Earle, of the Earle Family, was director of the Liverpool to Manchester Railway and a witness to
Huskisson's fatal accident (http://www.yoliverpool.com/forum/showthread.php?t=246&highlight=Huskisson) on its opening day.
Built in 78
acres of grounds, once part of the Manor of Allerton. The main house was unfortunately demolished 1937 and all that remains is what you can see below with
out houses at the
rear:

Well if you've got

We've walked around the places you mentioned Kev and
it always used to be dead quiet and a bit spooky :ninja: :)
Then we used to go over to Clarkes gardens.
Havn't been around there for ages.

ChrisGeorge 12-22-2006, 02:46 PM Splendid Speke Hall pics, Kev. Well done. The pic of the sandstone house which is not I think part of the hall, is that a building on the estate. If so I don't recognize it though I have been to Speke Hall on a large number of occasions. I know that the kitchen wing which I believe is the older part of the hall is sandstone, and I have take a black and white pic of the mullioned window there in past years, but the building you show appears a separate building. Please clarify if you would.

Hi MissInformed
The house and mausoleum are mentioned in Robert Griffiths' History of the Royal and Ancient Park of Toxteth Liverpool, pp 151-154, but there is no illustration. I can't recall seeing an illustration of them either. You can see a portrait of Dr. Solomon at

completely wondering the same thing kev!
i think it is probably because there is alot more money and people with money allerton way, to preserve and upkeep these great houses and estates...
but then if toxteth park/dingle had such rich people to begin with (i.e the time these great houses were built) did not their families keep the houses?
exactly, i would have assumed that wealth was pretty much equal whether you lived in Dingle or Allerton.
PhilipG 02-17-2007, 07:23 PM disc phil - here's a thought, why did estates like those above not survive to this very day unlike some in allerton etc....
They were too near to town, and the newly-built terrace streets.
Also too near to industry and grime.
The wealthy from the city centre first settled in Everton, then the Dingle, and then Aigburth, although there were isolated estates further out as shown by your pics of Highfield, Dovecot, etc.
Those were only demolished comparitively recently for housing estates.

Has anyone else noticed the sandstone pillars at Shorefields school. If you look at this map there was a path to East Dingle on Dingle Lane/Dingle Mount.
http://www.toxteth.net/maps/liverpool/lpool6d.htm
I don't believe these pillars are associated with the school, but could easily be the entrance pillars to a large house.

They were the gateposts to the house called East Dingle.
Dingle Vale Secondary School was built on the site.

The entrance to it is in Mossley Hill but the house itself is in Aigburth. Locally it's seen as being in 'Aigburth'.

Not at all. The boundaries of Aigburth are totally clear. Both Sudley House and entrance are in Aigburth. It's Mossley Hill that has no defined boundaries. I would say that Sudley house is in the Aigburth part of Mossley Hill. A useful reference is the booklet by E H Smith on Mossley Hill published in 1995

Here we go again! :)
I agree with you about Sudley House. Locally, Mossley Hill Road is seen as the dividing line between Aigburth and Mossley Hill. In my mind (just imagine facing Mossley Hill church) the left side (the Sudley House side) is in Aigburth and the right side (Holts fields) is in Mossley Hill. People from outside the area often conflate Mossley Hill and Aigburth (perhaps because the railway station used to be called Mossley Hill for Aigburth?). I like the idea of the Aigburth part of Mossley Hill.
It seems that LCC is busy defining (redefining/inventing even) districts within the city. The boundaries of Aigburth in particular need to be redefined to fit in with modern usage. This would mean having the sign for Aigburth at the beginning of Aigburth Road. It always amuses me that more people live in a place they and the local media (and especially estate agents) call Aigburth that actually is not Aigburth than live in Aigburth proper.
Speaking as a resident of Aigburth proper, I would welcome the extension of our borders to Dingle Vale. I would not be adverse to annexing Mossley Hill and whilst we're at it we'll take Cressington and Grassendale from Garston. :PDT_Piratz_26:

Chris Brown 01-09-2008, 10:35 AM Hi Kev,
Great photos of the remnants of the old Manor House at Allerton golf course.
It has good memories for me as I started playing golf there in the late 1960’s.
The north end of the building used to house a café until the stable’s upper floors were revamped into Allerton & Dudley Golf club.
There is a picture of the main house in its former glory hand on the wall of the golf club bar, which my be of interest to you.
I have attached a link that has some fantastic prints of the Great houses and Halls of our part of Lancashire,
Regards
Chris Brown.

Wooltonian 05-05-2008, 04:22 PM I was born and lived within five minutes walk of Allerton Tower, and remember playing around it before it was unfortunately destroyed, as happened to too many of the old historic large homes and estates around the Woolton/Allerton area.
The part that remains I have always understood to be the Orangery leading off from the main building.
There is a gatekeepers residence still there off Woolton Road.
I am not sure on this, but did I understand someone to write referring to it as Allerton Manor.
Allerton Manor was the estate right next to it, and eventually became the Allerton Golf Course to my knowledge.
On my last trip home I visited where the old manor was located, where it acted as the golf clubhouse, and found just a sad picture of what it used to be, the front columned facade almost gone. I had the feeling they were goingb to knock that down, instead of keeping it to incorporate it into a new clubhouse.

Wooltonian 05-05-2008, 04:58 PM [QUOTE=Kev;84295]Had a walk around Woolton Manor this afternoon whilst visiting my grandad:
I was surprised to see you refer to this home as Woolton Manor.
Living 5 minutes away from where I was born and lived, in Vale Road, I always krew it as the Convalescent Home, used for people with the likes of TB.
In the wartime it was occupied by the RN as a hospital, and I used to go there to the dances they held, as I was friendly with a WREN stationed there.
In those days of severe food rationing I enjoyed the food spread at intermission.
I last visited it a couple of years ago to find out it was an old folks home.
Wooltonian 05-05-2008, 05:21 PM Just joined and found this section which is great.
I am still having a problem sorting out how to reply to individual submissions on content, and some things being quoted regarding certain photos and what they are, especially in the Woolton/ Allerton area.
I was born and lived in Woolton from 1926 to 1955.
I will attrempt to post a photo of what became of Woolton Manor, which I knew before it had the devastating fire.
I used to sneak in to the clubhouse in my early days, into a large circular room which had a long curved staircase, and slide down the balluster.
When I took the photo all that was left was the front columned facade, and Itb looked as though they were going to remove it. What a shame we lost so many of these old homes to fire and rotting out allowed.
Just discovered the want the URL of my image, why can't I just attach it as in a normal OE message..?

Do you have a picture hosting service? Photobucket or Flickr or similar. I use Flickr, and it's free to join. You can then post your pics in the same window as your message. Some people, eg., taffy, do post as attachments. Follow the instructions above the posting box where you see the paperclip.
