SM are you ?
Are you a paid up member Johnno ? .. and have you had any success researching your family ?
Have a look at my homepage
Yes I am a paid up member
We've traced our line back on my fathers side back to Ireland and the instance/reason we ended up in Liverpool in the mid 1800's... but.. as of yet , and I've let my paid membership lapse of Genesreunited... Genesreunited has given me nothing .. :(
I have found GR useful but there are other useful sites which are free.
Have barely met any family members and not arsed to.
FKoE, did you try some of the sites with links to Irish Family history, did you have a look at my site?
yeah.. yours is a great little web page by the way..
did you ever use freebmd ?

Aarhh, yiss oi am!
Joined towards the end of February and found it very useful, the art is swapping info with other members. Most are very helpful. I started out trying to do it on the cheap, paying GR 50p a time to have a look at the 1901 census — not a bright idea!
OK, in the end I forked out £70.00 to ancestry.co.uk, —I can hear the sharp intake of breath from here, but believe me it's a brilliant site, it literally saves you many wasted hours and £££'s! Recommended! There is no way you can do this genealogy lark on the cheap, for instance, if you need a marriage cetificate it'll cost you £7.00 for a photostat!
The most useful free site I've come across is lancashirebmd.org.uk especially for marriages.
Forums, such as
Merseyside Genealogy & History Forum (genchatfriends.proboards39.com/index.cgi) or rootschat.com can also offer some friendly advice and lookups.
To anyone thinking of giving it a go, I'd say be prepared for many late nights/early mornings because it's addictive. And don't think of it as a stress-free pastime, it ain't! When you're of Irish descent and you haven't got a clue whereabouts they were born, it certainly winds you up.
But in conclusion, there's a lot of folks out there willing to rattle a few bones with you. Try it.

Another not too well known site is www.b4u.co.uk Has free access to the voters list. There are other sites shown on there which one should avoid, but the search is good.
I agree with Scousemouse it becomes very addictive as you start to build your tree.
On genesreunited (http://www.genesreunited.com)there are facilities to request help in looking for info and you can also look for info on a surname, it also lets you search for Hot Matches, its not a bad site and have had contact from a number of very useful members, you also get the opposite as well.
When you start you need a good system for keeping records and notes so you can always return to check facts or even new leads. For me it was easier in that the family lived in the same village until early 1900s and we have a surname thats unique (or so I like to think) the surname is very much a Shropshire name.
But try different sites especially the freebies, some are very active , others not.
I think the best info is to start with what you know and then build on that.
If you are unsure or need advice there are a number of people on this site that could help and offer suggestions.

Hi bobbymac see you are in Canada maybe you can point me in a direction. One side of my family was in the army and was based in St Johns New Brunswick, where my Great Grandmother was born. Do you happen to know where records for military births would be kept. Help needed.
Many thanks :Colorz_Grey_PDT_16:

I have Subcriptions with both Ancestry & Genes Reunited and although Ancestry is expensive it is worth every penny
I've have some branches back to 1500's but that is a family in Suffolk that stayed in the same village & each member had about 10-15 children so that side of the family has a lot of researches looking for them
my Liverpool families are a lot harder to trace but is a lot more fun looking for them as I know all the places where they lived including my gt grandparents who lived in the next street to me

I think the best info is to start with what you know and then build on that. Number one 'To Do' on your list!... Have a 'Grab your Granny Night' and take a pad and pencil with you — she may not remember your name, but she will remember names from eighty odd years ago! Gives you a great start, and a good excuse to visit the old dear!

Just to follow on from this even aunts/uncles, extended family these are your history, once they die lots of info is lost as I have found to my cost.
If there are a number of people interested or have started to trace their family tree, is it worth having a Family tree section within Yo Liverpool or are people happy using elsewhere?

Hi Sweetcheeks, sorry I don't know of a military birth site, but you could try the Mormon church site, I don't have the url right now, but it should be easy to search. They have a very extensive bmd site. Tata.

Ta very much yooz are just brill :celb (23):
Family search is good for the info you are after.
Miltary try the Great War Forum
http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?
Ask for advice on how you would get the info you require, abit of advice spend a bit of time looking at the threads and past requests and get a feel of the site then post in the appropriate thread.
You will possibly come across a number of members from this site on others.
Good Luck and lets us know how you are getting on

Hi, I just joined today and am now brousing the site.
I have spent many thousands of happy hours at my PC investigating my family back to Liverpool and before that Neston and Thornton Hough in the Wirral.
With the help of friends in England, I have quite a lot of stuff. I designed an Excel Information Sheet for each and every member in my tree and it includes birth, marriage, death, children's births, parents names, sibling names etc. For every item there is a column for date, address and evidence.

Glad you are having some success with your family tree. It takes a lot of time and effort. Well done. :)
Have you got lots of pictures of L'pool ? There are some excellent web-sites.
Liverpool Pictorial (mentioned on this forum) is the best. Loads of L'pool scenes.
